Roll Call & a Trip Down Memory Lane: Frank Sokol's Unauthorized Pitt Sports Message Board

The recent passing of friends California Panther, geno2u and Harve74 got me thinking about the days way back on the "original" Pitt sports message board -- Frank Sokol's Unauthorized Pitt Sports Message Board.

I'm not exactly sure when it started, but I got turned onto it in the middle of the 1996-1997 basketball season by a good friend (now known as @sumomann).

At the time, you didn't need to log on and/or sign in. One just posted a handle and some thoughts. It was a lot of fun and a little crazy at times. Posts from Pitt Football and Pitt Basketball were combined all on the same board.

At the same time as Frank's Board, the "Panther In the Lion's Cow Pasture" Board was around, and many of us "originals" posted on both.

I know that Harve74 and California Panther were posters then. Some others who I believe shared in the fun were @Black Panther, @pittizit, @Sean Miller Fan (then Belle Vernon Panther, yes?), @Panthervision (then Lou), @plcp, @Bethlehemjohn, and of course, @NTOP . There were others I recall from those days -- The Old Panther, Midnight Panther, Infoman, Boston Panther, Allstar Inc., "brian," and Harry the Pitt Guru (who was our first Board Maven), just to name a few. On this board, we talked about our excitement in the hiring of Walt Harris, and the ups and downs of Ralph Willard, among other things.

If I'm not mistaken, Frank's original board shut down sometime in 1999 or so, and we all migrated over to the PLCP board for a time, This is when we first started sharing posts with geno2u. In 2001, I believe this turned into the Rivals Panther Lair that it is today. There was a pretty good Scout Board for a while too, but the Lair persevered.

Here's the roll call … let us know if you were a poster back on Frank Sokol's Grand Old Message Board (and what your "handle" was then, if different than now).
My God,when did California Panther pass away?

What ever happened to Lee Corso's Rental Car?

I also remember when Dokish used to post on here before he spun off his own blog. I've been kicking around the idea of taking Sean Miller Fan big-time. I'm talking blog, podcast, YouTube channel, premium content, weekly interviews with a Miller family member. What do you guys think?
Please do

just don’t spam here to self promote yourself as dokish does continuously

I have used 2 other handles over the years, pittpride09 and KeywestPanther. Those were the rough and tumble times and I remember when altoonapanther took it to the enablers

I've asked this before and never got an answer. Does anyone know whatever happened to Frank Sokol?

I remember as a kid, I had to be like 13 or 14, and getting a "Blue Chips" Magazine that went over recruiting. Dan Marino and John Elway were the cover boys.

I remember those days! I remember starting to notice recruiting when Mike Chryst (no relation) was the big star at Penn Hills and signed with Pitt. Unfortunately he didn't do much here. Also the following year being surprised when the other big star at Penn Hills, Joel Coles, signed with the nits (even in the glory days we still lost local talent to them). But I really started to follow closely as you say with Marino & Elway and that class. The Parade all-america team was another great source for info before the internet.

If I recall correctly, football and hoops were together on one message board on Frank’s site, but there were definitely separate football and hoops boards on PLCP. I remember it this way because before I did hoops “Dribbles,” I started off by doing a similar thing with both hoops and football thoughts together on Frank's board, because both items were discussed on the board at the same time. It was kinda based on Smizik's weekly column titled "loose items from a tight leaf notebook," or Gene Collier's "some things I think I think."

That's my memory anyway, and usually I'm pretty good about remember things such as this. But it was 23 or so years ago so ...
Phil Musick was some things I think I think.

What happened to braves2121? Was he the one who said it was tough to play at that temporary Clemson arena in Greenville because of the glare? Either way, I liked that dude.

Good call. He helped me with stat keeping at Green Tree. Haven’t seen him for at least five years.

Sorry to hear about the loss of our fellow PITT posters...on football, I’ve often posted “we had ‘em all the way” (and thanked the Gunner)...California Panther would always reply and we exchanged messages about Bob Prince and more...these friends who I’ve never seen, are true reminders of how we value each other and can care about one another without physically being there.

I also miss hearing from Kiwi Jeff, who my son and I sat with Jeff and his wife a number of years ago at the Pete...another great PITT fan and poster (who I haven’t seen post for a while).

Also through this board have met other Portland PITT alum, including local coach, PittPitt.

All of you are family!

Hail to PITT!

Kiwi is a good dude .
I think he realized he was taking things too seriously on these boards - and took a step away .

My brother used to post regularly years back / and self exiled because “it’s just not fun anymore “

Facebook. He wasn't from Morgantown, but he was from WV.
I faintly recall Pitt recruiting a kid from West Virginia that Drew claimed to have inside info on. He always kept the board posted and thought he was coming here but he got away.

I was both RocketManFan and Smiley's Boy... countering the insane hatred for our then-AD. No one is perfect and being AD at Pitt ain't easy - and was doubly so back then. As Beano Cook once said "Without Steve Pederson, there would be no Pitt Football today".

My dear friend NTOP was then my new neighbor (well, I moved next to him so I was the new neighbor). Probably the only folks on this board who posted from about 75 feet away from each other! The dear NTOP is well and in a downsized venue that permits his irascible self more time to think up witticisms and challenge stupidity

BTW - my new handle reflects my continuing belief that keeping "PITT" and "Pittsburgh" closely aligned was, is, and always be a GOOD thing.

PITTSBURGH can designate this region's namesake school and home of the Panthers quite nicely... particularly in an age when this city's renown and reputation are both on the considerable rise.

The "we're just Pitt-of-Oakland" people are stooges... and too often haters of other civic treasures like the Pirates/Pens/Steelers.
