I thought the one thing that the Dukes did was effectively scout us. They were able to
get us out of our offensive flow, cut down some of the drives in the lane (we got there
anyway), and denying Frame open looks, while challenging Ellison and McGowens to
shoot from three land; even our two BIGS got open three looks twice.
BUT...and it's a big BUT.....how do you effectively prepare for a relentless team
that keeps coming at you, and eventually imposes their will on your players?
We played sloppy on offense, but we kept coming at them. We forced our way into
the lane even when it wasn't there. We couldn't hit threes, couldn't get Frame open,
but for once, we hit the boards for some offensive rebounds. Ellison's follow up dunk
after a miss took the air out of the Dukes IMO. Their coach probably thought they had
an advantage inside, and with Hughes they did some of the time. BUT.... I doubt he
expected the inside fight out of Chuka who battled all night and was effective on the
boards. The rest of the time all of our players hit the boards and we out rebounded
them! I doubt their coach expected that. I also doubt that a team as young and
inexperienced as we are could basically render their offense into the mess it mostly
was all game. Adjustments?...they had none. IMO they were shocked at the result.
Again credit to our guys for such fight in their game on both ends of the floor.
It's getting repetitive, but Capel?....Wow.
