... just watched WPXI sports.

Not even a mumble about the Pitt Hoops game.

Now keep in mind that even when we were regularly garnering 5 seeds or better, WPXI often even begrudgingly just threw out a Pitt Hoops score when the Steelers season is still in play.

But for a Hoops fan like me, it's always discouraging how much this just is not a hoops town.

Perhaps, right now, this is a little bit for the better.

But it seems to me that our Panther Hoopers are going to need all the help they can get, from every possible avenue, to get back to where we were 6 years ago.

It seems to me, that the Pitt staff (assistants) are making more of an effort recently (and I mean very recently) to try to get the fan base more engaged. It can't hurt.

Yes, it can't hurt. To what are you referring though?

Steelers and Pens at this time of the year. That’s it. Not even worth watching.

For some perspective, in 2004, the Panthers beat Villanova in the final game of the year (senior day) to win the Big East conference regular season outright.

The lead story of the Channel 11 news (in March) was the Steelers release on punter Josh Miller, complete with quotes of experts and people on the street. The second story was a plain old Pens game, complete with full highlights.

And last, Pitt Hoops was mentioned with 2 highlights for about 15 seconds.

Coach Cage and to a lesser extent Coach Ferry, have taken to extolling the positives about the team on Twitter. They have done this in the past with tweets, but more recently have begun to engage fans that reply with replies directed to those fans.

Would be nice if it could become more of a hoops town tho...

I disagree with this general premise. PITT basketball in te first 15 years of this century got a lot of coverage. That’s because the program routinely provided nationally relevant teams and moments. So of course it’s “news”

When you have a team playing in front of 2k and 3k and not competitive, there is no story. So I understand the coverage diminishing. This is not the NFL were it is the top story regardless. This is not the only snow in town where there is built in relevancy because of that. We know this.

The story is more the program needs to create its own relevance. It’s a poor product right now. Create a good product and everything will take care of itself

Actually, you aren't really disagreeing with the general premise. In fact, you likely restated the general premise ... hence the title "sigh"

Couldn’t agree more. Especially the weekend evening sports guy....Bill whatever his last name is

It’s 2 minutes of absolutely nothing except a Steeler mention that most Steeler fans already heard about the day before. Channel 11 sports should go the way of local print media sports coverage

And there you have it. Pittsburgh has 3 Pro sports teams. The Panthers are an afterthought to most area fans. Guys like us are in the minority. To me Pitt sports comes first. That doesn't mean I am not a fan of the pro sports. Actually I am a pretty rabid fan of those sports. But Pitt comes first.

Welcome to reality.

Of the top 30 media markets in the nation, I would gather we are DEAD LAST in regards to basketball interest, IQ and even local talent. Basketball interest and media coverage is essentially zero here.

I never, ever, ever, never, ever, ever, never, never watch Channel 11 news/sports. Their Sunday Night Sports Roundtable feature usually Exhbits 1, 2 and 3 as far as Pittsburgh media who don't follow or no anything about the sport (Madden, Steigerwald and DK)

Well on top of that, ONE of those franchises is historically popular, iconic and a brand name along with Cowboys, Yankees, Man United, Canadians, Notre Dame, etc....and just happens to be on the very short list of Super Bowl favorites and full of some of the biggest stars in its sport.

ANOTHER of those franchises have won the championship in their sport the past two years, have had a historically great decade, featuring one of the greatest players in the sport's history.

And the Third is a test tube of incompetence, sharing a long part of their season with no other sports teams, that is just so damn fun to talk about because of the insanity that runs that franchise.

Pitt sports, who yes I would love to see get not just more, but more positive coverage is going to have to do something special before it gets air time. That being said, Pitt BB even when reaching #1 ranking and perennial top 10 rankings was still largely ignored until the NCAA tourney.

I can't believe anyone would still waste time watching the local news. I get old habits die hard but there's are so many better options at this point.

Coverage as a whole will never be on the same level as the pro sports. Pens and steelers season overlap and with their success combined with our poor performance of late will never get Pitt that level of attention.

I will say I don't really sigh or have a huge issue with it. Would I love it if Pitt was dominating the headlines and #1 for the city? Of course. But it is what it is. You can find the coverage you want (Vuk and Peak are probably the best).

The last time we had a major local news station break a Pitt story was when Rich Walsh gave us our equivalent of "Dewey Defeats Truman", maybe it's best if the local news just stays away anyway.

My goodness, that was almost 14 years ago. How can you remember that in such detail.
Do you think maybe you’re a bit wierdly obsessive about it.

LOL! I think many on this board have gone beyond obsessive when it comes to sports in general. If I did what some on this board claim they do and if I could remember what some on here remember about Pitt or any sports, my wife would divorce me and I'd start thinking I had some serious issues with my priorities. I've been a Pitt fan for longer than most and I do attend most home football and basketball games, but not as much as I used to. Life has a way of regulating that, fortunately.

The only time I watch that news broadcast is the end of the 10:00 news on Fox when I'm early for the Seinfeld reruns. David Johnson's nose job still cracks me up to this day. His nose is the size of a peanut.
