So Capel has 6 years left on his contract

Nope. You’re wrong. He took an 0-18 program that was losing by 30-40 every night, and quickly brought in ACC level players who have had us essentially in every game we play. That’s not an F grade. You want to give him a C...I can buy an argument. You can stomp your feet like a kid at Toys R Us but I’m glad he has stability.
I agree
As frustrated as I am with our February swoon-
Taking a longer view - we are a competitive team again .
Just not good enough to win these Coin toss games

Well you’re assuming that champ Toney and drumgoole are gone. Which is why it’s an incomplete.
I have no interest getting into this debate but have to say, I almost spit out my coffee laughing when your counter reply to SMF is that his claim is incomplete because he’s ‘assuming’ the 3 are gone. How can you make that reply when you’ve been endlessly debating with posters that Champ is gone as if it’s the most certain fact in all of college BB. I’m not disagreeing with you on that ‘speculation’, it’s just funny you used it as an uncertainty to counter SMF.

Only thing you can question in SMF’s claim is Toney.

I know this will never happen but Brad Stevens is making less than $4 million/year which seems extremely low. If Pitt offered him $10 million/year for 6 years would he turn that down? Of course Pitt isnt going to do that. This is an extreme example but if you pay enough, you could get anybody.

Nate Oats is making 3.2 now. If you paid him 5.5-6, he'd take it. Again, that will never happen but I hate when I hear "Pitt can never get a good coach to come here." What you should say is "Pitt is not willing to pay enough to get a good coach to come here."
In the modern era of Pitt athletics Pitt has hired how many great ( hot ) coaches away from other schools .

Answer is two : Johnny Majors and Paul Evans

Pitts history is hiring assistants not frontline guys .

I’m a pretty positive guy. Sometimes too much.

If a player is hard to coach or isn’t fitting in, it happens. These are teenagers becoming men and sometimes that process takes time, or needs to take place somewhere else. I get it.

But when it keeps happening, you wonder if something else is wrong. I don’t get it. Capel seems like good basketball man and a good man in general. I’d want to play for him (based on what I see)

We have what are still considered very good (now upgraded) facilities, and the fan/student support is rabid for a winning (or at least rising team).

So what the hell is it? We should be talking about a team coming together (back to the Tourney) and great class coming in. That was my year 3 expectation.

Hindsight being 20/20 (or 50/50) Pitt should have stayed with Stallings one more year, then backed up a dump truck full of cash to the driveway of Nate Oats and unload it until he says stop.
Was Nate Oats in play the last head coaching search? He’s done a pretty good job at Alabama.

Beep Beep Beep

Because all programs have a dump truck, right???

The image is that Pitt is cheap. Perhaps they don't bring in the revenue as some other top schools, but they really aren't cheap. Pitt way overpaid for Stallings & Capel. Oats recent raise and extension at Alabama puts him in the ballpark of what Capel makes. (I still think Capel makes more) I think Capel started at $3.2 mil at Pitt, Oats made $2.5 at Bama. I think he is up to $3.2 now.

Im thinking they may have peaked a little early his year. Still sticking to my Mussleman over Oats debate with SMF.
I also wouldn’t have minded Mussleman, though I likely would’ve had concerns at the time over his predominately-west coast background. I forget if his name was considered at all.

His first 3 years were a complete failure as he lost his first 2 classes almost entirely.

Johnson - transfer
McGowens- transfer
Toney - probable transfer
Murphy - transfer
Champagnie - NBA
Drumgoole - miss
Coulibaly - nice backup

Honestly, this is an F grade. In building a program, it would he hard to do any worse than this. We bash Stallings and yes, he had to go but Capel has had an extra year and is this close to bringing us back to Stallings level.....and he has 6 years left. What an effing mess Heather has on her hands.

Thank god. He will turn it around

Stallings was purging the roster of players he did not recruit and got caught with a trash roster in year 2. Capel is doing it with guys he recruited and played for 2 to 3 years. And there is still little reason to think things are going to be much better going forward.

Pitt was cheap 10+ years ago but they spend appropriately now that they're in the ACC (Jamie was usually very well-compensated, though). Both Narduzzi and Capel are paid in the top 1/3 of the conference.

I know Capel isn't going anywhere. And this is a Covid year with no fans. But next year, and the next, it's difficult to see Pitt fans sitting through the late season collapses, filling up the Pete and restraining from booing. Something will have to give.

Systemic under-performance
Then just tell us what coach is coming in here and turning this program around in three yrs within the guidelines that are in place currently by Pitts administration . ( no booster group no bagman )

It's not that Capel has failed to turn things around in 3 years. It's that there seems to be little reason for optimism going in to year 4. That's a big problem.

Tbh, Capel recruited well enough to have this team poised to make a big leap in the ACC standings. This is a totally different league than it was in Capel's first year. In 2019, the ACC had THREE #1 seeds in the NCAA tourney. This year, I highly doubt any ACC team will get a seed higher than 4. However, instead of progress and something positive to sell, it's another February swoon, going 1-8 in the last 9 games, with the same chemistry and discipline issues that Capel coached teams have become known for - topped off by the Exit-man and Toney departures & a looming decision from Champ.

I'm all for giving a coach a blank slate for 3 years and seeing what kind of momentum the program has in the 4th. Even though year 3 of JC was squandered, I felt like there was still a glimmer of hope going forward. I'm highly skeptical after the events of last week. Last week sure felt like watching Sonny Bono start out down the slope.

I think he will be successful in time at Pitt .

I am thinking its 50/50 right now. We seem to see glimpses of good schemes and improvement of execution, but so inconsistent. For all the complaining done about his recruiting here, actually there is a parade of good players, Champ, X, Toney, Femi, etc. But, this entire X , Trey, Toney, behavior, interaction, handling makes me think there is a flaw in HCJC 's culture/coaching dynamics. But he will be given the opportunity to right the ship. Proving you are good at something is what athletics/competition are all about. Hopefully the building has begun. I just hope the next player that proves he is non coachable will be out the door faster than you can say "Chuck Noll"

What do you consider successful at Pitt?

1. Top 6 finish in ACC 6/10 years
2. NCAA Tourney 8/10 years
3. Seed below 9 6/10 years
4. Sweet 16 3/10 years
5. Final Four 2/10 years
6. NC Game 1/10 years

Any one of the above will put the Stallings Valley behind the program, imo.

What do you consider successful at Pitt?

The question is open to anybody.
Without the reemergence of a booster group a successful bb program at Pitt would be a consistent > .500 conference record with being a bubble tournament team just about every yr . A bad yr would be a game or two under .500 . Every so often a run to the sweet sixteen seems reasonable .

The JD yrs ( 1st 10 ) of regular season success was an aberration in the history of the program and can’t really be expected .

Justin is not ready for the nba. Ur nuts if u think he is. He needs to work on his three point shot and his jumper a ton. Also needs work on his ball handling he should not go. He needs another year at least to work on these issues. His d is not the best either. He takes plays off. He is good around the rim but keep in mind he will be considered small if he plays as a forward. The avg height for a 3 in 6-8 in nba and if he wants to play the three u better be able to knock down jumpers at a high rate.

The question is not whether his game is ready or not. The question is where he's going to be drafted and whether or not he's ready to make a shit-ton of money.

He's going to be working on his game next year regardless if it's at Pitt, a NBA roster, or developmental league.
