So if Pitt doesn't play OKST this year

Do you think by replacing OK State with Akron that we will pick up an additional 5 wins?
No but with cupcake teams instead of good teams some of the 8-5 seasons could be 10-3 instead, making the program more respected and get us better bowl games. Nobody cares who you beat, or even remembers, they just see 10>8.

Why not just go independent then, play no one, and go 10+ wins every season? It seems like that is the solution based on this thread. Playing Georgia State, Akron, and Wyoming should bring some nice crowds for those 10+ win seasons. :)

That would be more fun, I generally just watch Pitt games, and coming away with a lot of wins would increase the enjoyment for me. And I honestly don't care about filling the stadium, 35-40K is fine to me. Easier to get tickets, less traffic, and I only go to 1-2 games per year anyways.

Besides, joining the ACC without committing to spend and do anything and everything the ACC competition does is BS, I'd rather be at a lower level if you're just being in the ACC to collect a check.

I'm not looking for three cup cakes, but if Pederson or Barnes or Jeff Long's (How far in advance are these made) idea was to improve attendance by bringing in top notch opponents it does not work unless it's ND, PSU and sometimes WV. Otherwise we get the same 35-45 K and usually get beat in the process setting up the casual fan writing Pitt off for the remainder of the season. An OOC schedule that does not have back to back top ten teams providing a reasonable opportunity to sweep seems to me a better way to get the program to a better bowl over all, and may help recruiting in the process by having more wins. Of course it's incumbent on Pitt winning the games they're supposed to win (something that's never been easy) to keep momentum going. I don't think Oklahoma St. served any helpful purpose this season other than to get me to leave a Pitt game at half time for the first time ever. I understand scheduling is hard. I'd appreciate an OOC schedule of PSU every year, or a rotation of some sort of PSU, ND and WV with a MAC school and a second tier P5 school. Again I know you still have to get them to come.
3 pages of posts and this is the first post from the other side of the argument that I can even comprehend and acknowledge as a viable point.. Obviously im in the other side of the debate but you bring up some valid points stating your case...

Like all arguments, the truth lies or is it lays, it's in the middle regardless. I love big time games with pitt but even I don't want to see an OOC of Bama, USC, Auburn and tOSU. I mean that would be counter-productive.. I despise, DESPISE these fcs scrimmages but if we value that 7th home game, it's the only way we are gonna get it..

So back to your point with ok state u. the bad outweighed the good. bigtime opponent but doesnt' bring much on the recruiting front, didn't help get an extra 10k butts in seats and we got embarrassed at home on tv... even with all this, I still cant support playing 3 or 4 bad, lower level opponents. People, fans, media see thru that crap. people who say only wins matter, no one remembers opponents are flat out wrong... I just cant get behind being scared to play P5 teams, I couldn't root for a team that dodged playing their peers.

you don't think the university has invested in new facilities for their baseball, soccer, softball teams? Or are you just talking about football and basketball? I think they stepped up, or tried to at least, to compete in the ACC across all sports.

Stallings hire was a head-scratcher but they extended narduzzi, hired a big name coach in mens and womens soccer (I've heard, don't follow the sports so I could be wrong). built new facilities up there behind trees where the ghetto was not too long ago..

we wont build a miniature golf course and bowling alley for our players, with slides and beds to take naps, like Clemson does.. If that is what you mean then I agree, we wont do that and im kind of happy about that..

I'm talking more about the two big sports. It's nice to get better at the other sports too, but I'd like to see them compete in the VISIBLE sports. But I'd probably watch the soccer games if they where on TV, I guess they're online. Maybe I should check that out :)

-Ill leave this thread like this.

-Name 1 Power 5 team, Just 1, that schedules a powerhouse non-conference schedule every year like Pitt, who's been tops in the country for about 5 years standing. Name 1 other team in the country in Power 5 that continues to schedule at least 2 Power 5 Teams from Conference Teams in the same season every single year that are competing for Conference Titles and National Titles. Name me 1 other P5 team that schedules like Pitt. Just 1.

-Next year, our non conference is against

10-2 Penn State, playing in the Fiesta Bowl after winning the Big Ten prior year, ranked 9th
9-3 Notre Dame, ranked 14th in the country, playing in the Citrus Bowl
12-0 Central Florida, playing Auburn in the Peach Bowl, ranked, ranked 10th

-Congratulations. We play 3 teams next year with a combined 31-5 record, all going to big bowl games, all ranked in the Top 15, and all might be preseason Top 10 teams.

-Its not 2 next year. We play THREE next year.

-If Pitt wins 4 games next year and the downtrend continues, maybe others perception will change.

-Ill sit here until someone names me 1 other team, just 1, from a Power Conference, that schedules year in and year out like we do.

I agree the OOC schedule is ridiculous next year but the ACC only plays 8 conference games so most teams in the conference play 2 good P5 teams. Fsu played Alabama and Florida last year OOC.
Clemson played Auburn and South Carolina. Central Florida is hardly a college football power and PSU was coming off sanctions that was supposed to cripple them for a decade when we scheduled that series. When Fsu/Clemson arent our crossover game then our Acc schedule is rather easy. I do agree we should make our schedule easier but it's not like we have the hardest schedule in the country or close to it and I enjoy playing Psu/ND.

Steel -totally agree with your philosophy and have been posting about this for years. I don't want a totally easy ooc but the 3-1 model must be followed now that we are in a more competitive conference than the old Big East. One brand name team , one FCS team that has no chance of beating you, a MAC opponent and even another power five opponent who has been historically mediocre at best is an adequate ooc schedule.I posted the other day how Syracuse schedules like Pitt but they have finally realized that their bowl drought will continue so they have really eased up their ooc so that they go now go 3-1 especially since they have to play divisional opponents Clemson, FSU and Louisville among others every year. In fact they just canceled a series with Wisconsin for 202o and 2021.
