Both the men and women are off to a good start. I know they really aren't into ACC play yet, but I've been following them. Going to take my little girl down to a game soon. She has been bugging me to go, and I've been wanting to.

Can't wait.

Women's program is actually off to their best start in history at 5-1-1.

While I guess 5-1-1 beats what they normally do, the level of competition has been, well, suspect.

St. Francis is 0-6-1, so they've lost to everyone they've played except the tie they got with us.
Robert Morris is 1-4-0.
Northern Colorado, the team that beat us, is 4-2-0.
Colorado College is 1-4-1.
Villanova is 0-6-0 (they lost last weekend to the Hoopies 8-0).
La Salle is 1-2-2.
Liberty is 1-4-1.

So the combined records of the teams we have played is 8-28-5. The teams we have either beaten or tied are a combined 4-26-5. To put it mildly, the schedule has been absolutely pathetic.

Went to the VT-UNC men's game tonight. UNC won 2-0. They looked much better than VT and very strong. Pitt will probably struggle once ACC play begins.

Your first line is right. They aren't usually as good against typically bad competition, so I'm hoping it is some sort of progress. Last year the women lost to LaSalle and VCU prior to conference play. Men seem to have started better too. It's about to get real for both. They will take major lumps in the #1 soccer conference.

Volleyball has a key match tonight at #24 Michigan. Winning this could be a bellwether for the season.

Men got pounded by #14 Wake, 0-4

Volleyball lost 1-3 to #24 Michigan.

The women added Boo Vasquez's sister, who was a club teammate of my daughter. She has made an immediate impact. Landing the top local players every year is a quick way to get on track. There is talent here. They also added the forward from Virginia who was a rival for my daughters team. Even though she never scored against us, my daughter said she was the toughest player she had to defend over the last two years. And that's saying something considering the national schedule my daughter played and the players she always had to defend against in club training who are starring at PSU and Virginia. She was the leading scorer in the country last year (I believe) and for Pitt to get her was a real coup.

Men lost to BC 2-0. They are 0-2 in ACC play. Their OOC schedule was very weak also with powerhouses like St Peters and Eastern Illinois. Jamie Dixon must be doing the scheduling for both soccer programs.

The women did get a 2-0 win over NC State in their conference opener today. Now NC State actually isn't any good either, in fact we beat them on the road last season. But like I said at the beginning of the thread, it's better than the alternative.

For people who are interested the game on Thursday night against Wake Forest is on ESPN3.

Almost 3 full seasons in, the men are still looking for their first ACC win. I dont think they won a game in the last year or 2 in the Big East. Their losing streak is becoming legendary.

By the way, the women got steamrolled by #2 FSU today, 6-0. While it seems clear that the women have improved, it is also clear they still have a long way to go.

And volleyball got swept by the state of Virginia. Terrible follow-up for the Olympic sports teams.

I know a former player who is dying for that position. He's got a very good playing resume and some solid coaching.

I went to the last regular season game vs Duke. It was a rainy night but I was surprised there had to be 400 people there including about 100 students. That doesnt sound like a lot but I wouldnt have been surprised if there were less than 50 total. It was poring down rain and the team was going for their 4th straight winless season in conference.

Pitt fought hard against Duke but was clearly outmatched as Duke must have had 70% possession. The brand of soccer was better than I expected. It got me thinking if Pitt became a legitimate program, they may get some good crowds. I was watching Wake-ND on TV in the non-hotbed of soccer that is Winston-Salem and the place was packed with a great atmosphere. Wake is a national program so thats not realistic for us but no reason we cant be Syracuse and Xavier and be competitive.

Wake has been a hot bed for soccer for a lot of years. Their program is outstanding and they always play to packed houses. Pitt can have that also with the right coach. If you noticed in that
game, Notre Dame and Wake both play a possession game and don't just kick the ball over the top and hope for the best. This is what Pitt has to do and that is all on the coaches. Here to hoping we
get it right with the next coaching staff.
