The softball team will be playing in Charleston, SC, next weekend with games scheduled Friday the 20th thru Sunday the 22nd. They just returned from Texas where they swept all 5 games to start the season 5-0. Any alumni in the Charleston area should come support the team. Check the Pitt site for scheduled times. All games will be played at the College of Charleston.

Good stuff. Fully aware of who they beat up on, but 5-0 is 5-0. Nice, feel good start to the season.

Seeing that Nirschl transfered was the first time I've ever been saddened over a transfer my 10+ years as a Pitt fan. I found myself going just to watch her hit, really unfortunate she left.

Not going to make Charleston, but I wouldn't be surprised if Pitt fans were around. Every time I've seen them on the road, there's always a vocal, if small, Pitt contingent. I'm trying to figure out a way to see them in Charlottesville at the end of the month since they're there the same weekend Baseball is Richmond...

I was wondering about Nirschi when I didn't see her name in the lineup. I was about to check to see if she was hurt. Didn't know about the transfer. Do you know where she went?

There will be a group from Hilton Head driving up, don't know how big yet. Charleston is a great town to visit.

I found the announcement about Tori's transfer to Oklahoma, pre-season #3. Nothing about why. I guess it doesn't matter.

If the best or second best player transferred in a revenue sport.

there would be an uproar and people would definitely be questioning the coach. So how good is Coach Aprile ? It looks like to me that she is scheduling her way to victories this year in the pre-conference slate compared to the last two years. Sam Houston St, Texas St and Nothern Illinois are the teams they played this weekend. At least next weekend it gets better with UCSB and Rutgers.

I think the pitching last year was a disaster between King and Larkin and most times the line up was shut down by any pitcher of decent quality.

Is Nirschl leaving is at least a yellow flag ? Shouldn't there be more pitchers on the roster ? We seem bloated with positon players.

I am by no means an expert, I'm just curious as to what is going on.

Re: If the best or second best player transferred in a revenue sport.

Remember that players don't have to sit out a year when they transfer in Olympic sports. That makes it pretty common for players to transfer. In Nirschl's case, she had an opportunity to transfer to a top team and took it.

I know nothing about the why or if it's a harbinger of things to come within the program. I do know she was fun to watch and that we need talented players like her to snap this sub .500 streak we're on.

I've seen them a bunch of times home & road and from the outside looking in, it appears to be a tight program. They travel a good bit, no team on campus has more alternate gear & equipment (and that was before this year's new jerseys - wish they'd sell replicas of some stuff), and they have a facility that fits them well currently (which is more than we can say for other programs on campus).

I think it's likely she thought it was a chance she had to take to hit her ceiling and maximize her exposure for the next level, if it comes to that. All the Southern California girls from her class and others after that still remain. I hesitate to read more into it than that.

Thanks Sin for your comments. Pitt MD, surprised at the seeming angst in your voice. I'm a glass half full kind of guy and always try to look at things from the positive side. I'll admit I get very little chance to see them play but stay in touch with Coach Aprile throughout the year. I've been to practices whenever I am in Pittsburgh and took the team and coaches to dinner after the season last year. I've gotten to know the players and coaches personally and, yes, they are a tight team, one that you'd be proud of. That includes Coach Aprile and her staff. Did you know that Coach Aprile played on those great US National teams that had Jenny Finch and others? She knows what it takes to be great and I have faith that she'll get this team to be real competitive in the ACC.

On transfers, up until now we've benefited from getting good players to come here. Two examples on our current roster are Shelby Pickett from Ohio State and Jenna Modic from Miami of Ohio. Pickett is from the San Diego area and played in the same league as some of the girls on our roster. That's how she got interested in Pitt. She's now our starting third baseman and one of our leading hitters. Modic pitched yesterday against St.Mary's and threw a shutout for her first victory. On pitching, we also added Kayla Harris, a freshman. who had a standout record in high school. So with King, Modic, Harris and Larkin, we have a pretty good staff.

On the competition to date, I don't ever get into strengths or weaknesses of opponents. Out of conference scheduling is done well before a season so you really can't anticipate how good a team will be. Take St. Mary's for example. We've beat them pretty good both times we played them. You might say they are weak. But they did beat then ranked #25 DePaul before this tournament. Last year we opened up against Oklahoma, pre-season ranked #1 or 2 and lost 1-0. That was probably King's best game of the year. We've also beaten Penn State pretty consistently which for some of our alumni seems to be the only barometer that counts.

I hope they beat Rutgers today so I can see them next week as our first 10-0 team.

I did not know that. Getting familiar with the program from that viewpoint has to be pretty special. I'm pretty proud of all Panthers athletes - but, yeah. Some of those girls are doing great stuff in the classroom. They were also great with the kids at the football Fan Fest thing last year. Pretty proud of the staff's development of Thea, too. Hitting frigging .545 through the first 10 games after averaging .213 through her first two years.

Been some turnover at the assistant level with Chamberlin, Leonard, and now Cognini - maybe a spark will come from that. Things looked real bright during the end of the Berliner/McConnell years - would love to see them approach that level again.

Very interested to see what Sevilla does this season - if the fluky injuries stay away, it could be a special year for her.
