Some thoughts from the PBC Roundball ...

This is insane. I respect DT and trust his observations, but he's giving his impressions of a not at all serious tournament featuring mixed teams. Based on that, you've decided that Coulibaly is similar to Samson George and that Champagnie won't be an important player next year? You've come to these conclusions based on a tiny sample of games you didn't even see?

Real talk, what is wrong with you?

I agree that too much should not be placed on impressions from an All Star game. I suppose I should have made that more clear In my initial comments.

My main point was to try to judge whether or not these two appear to me to be immediately higher impact freshmen and in the short time that I saw them, and they did not appear as if they would be.

Keep in mind that I have been off base on these quick impressions in the past. I saw Blair at a game at the end of his junior year of high school. I commented then that it didn’t look like Blair has good explosion on his jump (he was wearing heavy knee braces as well). But as the health of his knees improved, an All American was born.

I read your post following the all star game and thought you posted an objective
appraisal of what you saw.
As far as they not being "high impact freshmen"....I don't think too many of us
on here thought they would be. A three star rating can be deceiving. I tend to
look at which teams are recruiting them. None of the three are elites.
Personally I feel they will add to what we have, and are an improvement
over Davis, Ellison, George, Peace and Stevenson. Stevenson should
have given us more, but apparently he didn't fit with what Capel was
doing. So these three being Capel recruits, will IMO be better than those
I just mentioned. I believe they will make the team better, but will not be
difference makers....at least not right away.

A shorter version was whether or not I thought Karim comes in here at a level equal or greater than Terrell and I did not get the impression he does.

And THAT is the maint point I'm taking from your review. We still need a BIG.

I should add that I’m comparing Terrell as a junior vs Karim as a freshman. I would not begin to try to project how Karim projects over the next 2-3 years.

Listen DT knows his bb and watching guys play in an All Star game isn’t conclusive evidence on how they’ll play in an organized system , but it gives you an idea of their ability . I watched 5 minutes of a summer league game and that told me everything I needed to know about Stevan Adams , James Robinson and Donte Taylor . I first saw Sam Young in the Blue Gold game an instantly knew . I think what he’s trying to say is that these guys aren’t coming in here next yr and carrying the load . They could be great players down the line . Pitt unfortunately is not in on the level of recruits who can come in and really shake things up . Hopefully down the line with a successful program Pitt can land a few of these guys .

I don't think there was a lack of clarity on your part - you'd assume that people would take such insight with the proper context (small sample, not a serious tournament, etc), but SMF is SMF.

I was just annoyed at him for using your info (which is useful and appreciated) to feed into his ravenous insecurity about the state of our program.

If you know basketball, like DT does, like I do, then you can tell something from even these types of games. Of course, you can't make a 100% accurate assessment but you can tell something. Champagnie, fine, we aren't in dire need of a 3 right now. I have seen Drumgoole play and I think he's pretty good. No, Drumgoole won't be a difference maker right away, but I have him slotted in at the 3 playing the JWF role. But we are in desperate need of a Big. The fact that Coulibaly apparently wasn't boarding like crazy in a game where there are a ton of rebound opportunities is a little worrisome.

You do not know basketball and you prove it with regularity.

You're worried about Coulibaly's rebounding because he didn't board like crazy in the PBC Roundball Classic?

He boards like crazy everywhere else, but somehow this negates that? You constantly say that rebounding translates, but now it doesn't because he didn't do it in the PBC Roundball Classic?

DT mentioned how many 3s Coulibaly was taking. Have you stopped to consider that he might have just been having fun?

He might have even been having an off night shooting the 3-ball--it happens even to the best 3-point shooters--although I am not implying he is one of those.

That's entirely possible, but my point was that he doesn't usually attempt five 3s in one game. In his last 9 AAU games, he's attempted thirteen total 3 pointers.

He could have been having fun ... but it looked to me as if that's his game. I guess we'll see.

On the flip side, Champaigne had at least 4-5 open looks from three that he passed up early (and chose to drive instead). I was beginning to think this wasn't part of him game until he shot one later and hit it. I think he ended 1-3 from three.

And another guard. We have X and Trey and that’s it right now.

Drumgoole should be considered a guard as well. As should Au'Diese for that matter. Nonetheless, I get your point. Unless Sidy comes back and/or we get someone else, you'd almost figure that X and T would be playing 35 MPG each.

Agree - I think Drumgoole can play the two. Not sure on Toney.

They are 3 guards I believe. I meant PG and SG.
