STANLEY CUP PLAYOFFS

Game 7, NHL playoffs is the best drama in sport. Best. Nothing compares.
Especially when Game 7 goes to overtime and at it's absolute best when it is Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Finals !

Winnipeg vs St. Louis last night was an amazing comeback by Winnipeg, scoring 2 goals with their goalie pulled, the last with 1.6 seconds left in the game and then winning it in the 2nd OT.

3 Canadian teams left in the 2nd round (quarterfinals) .... last time a Canadian team won the Stanley Cup was 1993 ..... more excitement to follow ......... sure miss the days when the Pens were in the Playoffs !

By the way, NHL Draft Lottery is tonight.

My wife is a big hockey fan.
We went to Game 2 of Caps game while we were in DC.
And then Game 7 of Dallas this past Saturday.

I’m not a hockey fan. But it’s difficult to beat the atmosphere.

The playoffs have been.....okay. Meh, some great games, but kind of overall boring. I really think the lack of big and traditional US markets has hurt the playoffs. But I am having trouble getting into it. Finding a real rooting interest.

Carolina vs Caps. Carolina is boring to me. No stars, systematic, no juice positive or negative. The Caps have that, have Ovy, but do I really want to see the Caps win their second? Plus I love the symbiotic relationship that everytime the Pens or Caps have won a cup, it involves beating the other along the way.

Florida vs Leafs. I like Florida's team and heavy, almost old school style. But do I really want them to go back to back? The Leafs are THE story as they haven't won a Cup since color TV despite being center of the hockey universe. I can get with them losing again because now their window is probably going to start closing after this year.

Stars vs Jets. The Dallas Stars are the most "meh" team to me. Good team, no doubt. But combine with meh fans and meh team, they absolutely don't move the needle positive or negative to me. The Jets. Now this is the team I can get behind. Small market, never has won, whiteout (the original) and could break Canada's drought of having not winning the Cup since 1993. As much as I want that streak to remain, I can get behing Winnipeg.

Vegas vs Oilers. I hate Vegas. Just felt it was unfair to gift them an automatic Cup contender. Franchises like Buffalo and Philly have suffered so long, these guys are in it every year. But...I am rooting against the Oilers for a myriad of reasons, don't want to see them get their 6th Cup and jump the Pens, want McDavid to go Cup less in some perverse, macabre humor way, and yeah there is that 0 for Canada thing.

So just weird playoffs this year and finding it a bit hard to get into.

Granlund with a hat trick last night? Are you kidding me ? And Tocchet to the Flyers ? Wow.
Penguins and Pittsburgh sports just continue to suck out loud.

LOLOL....and then Kasperi Kapanen scoring the OT goal for the Oilers to move on to the conference finals last night. I mean the Sports gods have some major hate on us Yinzer sports fans.

Stars vs Hurricanes finals is the finals the NHl doesn’t want, but needs to realize they need to contract. Will be worst rated finals in many years. NY metro doesn’t need rangers, isles, and devils. Florida doesn’t need two teams. Contract the league and enhance talent.

Yeah, that's not going to happen. So happens that there are 4 Stanley Cups in Florida this century.

The NHL is also talking about expansion with Atlanta at the top of the list.
What a joke that would be. They already had 2 chances. It's purely a money grab for the current owners. They charge exorbitant expansion fees and send a good player to them , while fans pay the price watching minor league hockey with a bunch of ham and Eggers.

Here's an interesting take on the success of Florida and Tampa and the issues with especially the Canadian teams. Because of the higher income tax in Canada especially, but also places like Cali and NY, you can sign players for less in Florida, yet their net pay is the same as higher salaried players in high taxed areas. Because of this, it is giving some teams like $5 million dollar of cap space with amounts to a 2nd line forward or a 2nd pairing Dman, giving them deeper (better) teams.

It's starting to get more and more attention.

Hard to argue that Atlanta has failed twice due to ownership / management in large part.

However, how different is the Dallas market from ATL? With an ownership team that actually knows what they ate doing I think Atlanta could do well. Plus, Georgia football is months away.

Yep, the higher tax burdened states should really look into how they can reduce taxes to level the playing field, if they want their sports teams to be competitive!

Boy Oilers in the drivers seat in their series ... could we get another Stanley Cup final between Oilers and Panthers that goes to a game 7 again please?

Winnipeg with 2 goals with their goalie pulled in the last 2:00 to force OT in Game 7. Incredible moment.
I always hated Stanley Cup Playoff OT, especially when the Pens where serious contenders and it was 11pm on a weeknight and I had work in the morning 7am, and I felt like. I want to see the end, but that might be in 4 hours, I was always thinking they should just do regular season OT.

A player I have gained so much respect for and appreciation, and a surefire 1st ballot HOFer is Brad Marchand.

- Florida beats the Canes in Game 5 ...... 5-3 ...... to win the ECF's 4 games to 1 and head to the Stanley Cup Finals for the 3rd straight year (will be 6 years in a row that a team from Florida was in the Finals) !

- Yeah, Marchand is a really good player and was a big pick up near the trade deadline this year for Florida ...... he has made the Florida 3rd line a lot better as well as being good on the PP ..... Seth Jones was also a big pick-up late for Florida this season !

- Bobrovsky made some great saves tonight especially in the 2nd and 3rd periods.

- Of course, Edmonton is up 3-1 in their series with Dallas and if the Oilers win the series, I think it will be an interesting rematch of last years Finals with Florida ( a somewhat interesting contrast of the 2 teams).

- Barkov is one of the best all around forwards in the NHL, really enjoy watching him ..... great offense, great defense, and very good on both the PP and PK !

- Would think the Pens should have a new coach in the next week or two which will be very interesting as well ..... in addition we should start seeing some trades between now and the NHL Draft (later in June), ......will also see what draft picks we can get and whether any free agent signings happen or not.

Florida and Edmonton should be a great series. Again.

I am excited to see the Oilers / Panthers rematch. I think its good for the league that the eastern seaboard sees McDavid. That said, I think Bobrovsky will win it for the Panthers.

Depth

Interesting. Alot of debate about Florida (and Tampa) being able to have depth because they attract free agents because of favorable tax issues.

So I did an analysis. Parameters, 25 year old, Single Filer, top line Center AAV Salary of $10 Million

Miami (Florida) Panthers: His net (take home pay) after taxes is $6,103,563. Zero State Taxes
Pittsburgh Penguins: Net Pay: $5,696,593 State Tax $307,000
Dallas Stars: Net Pay of $6,103,563 Zero State and Local tax
Los Angeles: Net Pay of $4,892,868. State Income Tax: $1,295,610
Boston: Net Pay of $5,244,355. State Income Tax $859,208
Nashville: Net Pay of $6,103,563 No state or local.
New York: Net Pay: $4,752,293. Amazing $964,105 State and $387,165 Local Take home is less than 50% of salary.

So say you sign an 8 year (max) $80,000,000 deal.
You net almost $10 million more in Florida, Dallas or Nashville than say LA. $11 million more than NY. And both LA and NY are much more expensive places to live. Now no one at this salary is a pauper. But it has to be a consideration.

And I would imagine in Canada the divide is even worse.

And yet Edmonton will be in the finals for the second year in a row.
True. But also Canada has not won since 1993. I am not saying it is a 1:1 effect of low tax rates vs success. Edmonton have multiple #1 draft picks in the top 5 like 6 of them in an 8 year stretch has more to do with that, but yet they haven't won have they?

I am saying a franchise in Florida or Texas or Nashville can convince guys that they can earn more net pay with less salary (therefore cap space) which allows especially what Florida and Tampa has done by retaining and signing free agents.

I'm not disagreeing that it's an advantage. But it's a small advantage that comes into play around the margins. If you make a list of the top ten reasons that Florida is good, no state income tax not only isn't on the list, it can't see the list with a pair of binoculars.

And all the bitching from teams in the high tax states is, for the most part, just deflection.
