These foreign tours are great for the kids but they are only allowed once every 4 years and some programs dont really want to take them but they want the extra games so they go to Canada or the Bahamas to get extra games in. Leave it to SMF to shake things up:

August Madness

A 1-2 week period where anything goes. You can play anyone you want, anywhere you want. Charge for attendance, monetize the TV rights, etc.

Let's think about this. Other sports like baseball and soccer have exhibition games in their off-season. Why not basketball?

This is going to happen. It will just take someone smart who thinks outside the box.

I'd like to see our Panthers test their mettle next month. The obvious contenders are the Lakers (for exposure) and the Monstars (to experience playing at the highest level of competition). Unfortunately, Lebron and the Monstars are tied up shooting Space Jam 2. Other than that freak scheduling issue, I don't see how this plan cannot succeed. Next summer, I suspect the Pitt "AKA Toon Squad" Panthers will tip at the Pete against the big bads from another planet. Lower bowl tickets still available.

So thinking outside the box now includes copying what other sports do and what college basketball essentially already does with early tournaments...

Here’s a novel idea, how about not putting even more wear and tear on these “students” during the off season. Every pro or college trainer will tell you the kids have already played way too much basketball for their age and it’s breaking them down before they even get to the pros.

I love SMFs ideas. He thinks outside of the box, you got to give him that.

It's a business. The NCAA doesn't care about the athletes. Play the games and monetize them.

Because those exhibition matches are dog shit that even fans don't enjoy. They're quite transparently marketing efforts to sell overpriced tickets and merchandise to casuals who don't have the opportunity/money/desire to attend matches in Europe. Last year, Chelsea FC played an awful exhibition match in America against some trash MLS squad and ended up losing their second best attacking player to injury because of it. He may never recover, by the way, and he's 23.

You are suggesting something that only appeals to accountants. Good job, this idea sucks.

Being able to take a two week tour of Italy and play a few games along the way seems like a great recruiting and bonding tool to me . As opposed to staying home and playing pickup games everyday .
Come to Pitt and see the world ..is that the international rooms in the Cathedral or the Navy’s slogan !

Those exhibition pro soccer matches draw NFL sized crowds but we are talking about 2 different things.

Ohio State @ Pitt basketball in August draws 5K, maybe more. Many places would sell out

No, we're not talking about two different things. We're talking about the same thing on a smaller scale. The players are worked hard enough already and they would not benefit from this arrangement. I don't give a damn if the NCAA doesn't care about the athletes, I do and you should as well. This idea is awful.
