TCU blog says Dixon is first choice

Oh give me a break.
Q: When was the period of time in Pitt bb history that they recruited highly ranked players
A: When the Golden Panthers assisted in player procurement
Q: Where are the Golden Panthers
A: deceased
Q: When Ben Holland left for UCLA how many big name coaches were interested in the Pitt job
A: ZERO
Q:Is Pitt a more attractive job now or when Holland left
A: not now
Q: When will you wake up from your dream world and realize that Pitt has never been a Mecca of great college bb nor are those in charge willing to commit the assets and violations to achieve the success you want
A : apparently never

I thought Calipari and Prosser had interest at some point.

I like the coach from Yale. Probably doesn't recruit much at Yale, but it was impressive what he was able to do as an underdog without one of his best players.

Skip Prosser turned them down and Calipari had no chance he was here during their golden era of recruiting

And look at his results this year. Sorry, I'll pass.
I'll pass too, but not just because of this year.
Simply put, I don't think he is a good coach. I think he is good recruiter, but that is contingent on where geographically he coaches. I don't think he would recruit well here.
And finally, but most importantly, it would not be a good mesh. Sean it seems has am embedded contempt for Pitt that I have always attributed to playing under Evans. He might love his Alma mater, but he doesn't like it.

Either of those guys would probably have to be fired to come here. I remember the last time fire Dixon stuff heated up, people were saying Shaka smart and Brad Stevens. I really think we would end up with an up and comer, not an established coach with a decent gig.

And I would be totally fine with that. Get a guy on his rise and surf with him until he moves on.

At some point, I think more and more are thinking that way, but it probably won't be for a couple more years IMO. Like DT wrote, very few coaches who make the tourney 11-13 years get sacked.

My point is what SMF aspires to - why would we replace one coach for the other? The point can be made that Sean Miller attracts AND recruits much better players and yet - he lost too.
Understand your point, and Sean may be struggling with the high-level recruits he gets at AZ. But, are we forgetting his success and Elite 8s at Xavier, not exactly a recruiting haven like NC, Duke, or Ky? Sean is a hometown boy and Alum, has climbed the coaching latter, and has done well for himself. Hardly credentials to overlook at Pitt, if indeed he was interested, if Jamie had to be replaced.

Saul Phillips at Ohio University is a coach on the rise. In his 2nd season there. Led North Dakota State (12 seed) to a major upset over #5 Oklahoma in 2014. He is a great recruiter, only 43 and a very passionate coach. He would come at the right price too.
He should definitely be considered should Dixon leave.

It ain't as hot in PA either, so the whole sweating thing may not be an issue.

History says that is the kind of guy we would get.

Prosser accepted a deal in principle, but backed our when Swofford told him something was up with the Big East Conference, (ACC snatching BC and Miami possibly Syracuse) There was some interest at the time in "big name" coaches.

I am not sure we could get anything close to a Prosser level coach if Jamie leaves now. Fortunately, we do have a high buyout to help with the search if necessary.

Yea, no thanks. I'd rather have Dixon's tourney flameouts than a lottery ticket in some mid-major coach. If we cant get Sean Miller or some WTF hire (like Buzz at VT) like Thad Matta or Greg Marshall, I'd keep Dixon.

3 guys I wouldn't mind though that we can get are:

Fran McCaffrey (from Philly, has won at Siena and Iowa)

Kelvin Sampson

Bruce Pearl

Well, the fact you want Sampson and pearl tells me all I need to know about you.

Are you really serious? Pearl or Sampson? This has to be a joke.

Pastner got a reprieve and will be back in 2016-7. That's the power of a $10 mil buyout. But yeah, I love the comps to Miller, especially ol' bugger picker.

As far as potential "up and comers", you guys are probably gonna laugh at this one, but I'd take a good look at Nate Oats up in Buffalo. He's won 20+ both years as HC, built a solid staff (Donyell Marshall, Julius Hodge, a top Michigan AAU guy) and his incoming class is just a tad below Dixon's (a 77 PG, a 75 C and an unranked 2* SG from the best HS in Chicago). Certainly not as sexy as Marshall, but Oats' next job will definitely be in a P5.

Exactly right. I mean, Young is our best player this year. Who really expected him to have a huge game today? Did he even play today..

Did you even consider maybe Wisconsin followed the tried-proven path of beating Pitt? D up Young and Artis and let the chump Robinson beat you. Watch and laugh as he dribbles down court with his head down as he collides into his own player. You can't make this stuff up.

Because he has 4 Sweet Sixteen appearances and 2 Elite Eight appearances since 2011?

Oh so they defended him, that's why he wasn't there. Might be a revolution in the game...

Sampson and Pearl? No F.Haith?

According to Fort Worth Star-Telegram TCU is now looking at Virginia Tech's Buzz Williams. He is a native Texan and with VA Tech losing last night he is available to interview.

Obviously Dixon would be their first choice. I wouldn't complain about Sean Miller if that happened, but I don't know how anyone can seriously say he is a great coach because of his recruiting. If he recruits big time players at a school like Arizona, why does he not have that much more success than Dixon? Personally I think his teams really underachieve almost every season. He's a very good coach, but his tenure at Arizona has been very average for their standards.

We should get the Iowa coach. He is only losing to Villanova by 30 right now. I am sure he will be available after the Iowa fans bitch to the AD to fire him

Bruce Pearl .really?

Man, isn't that the truth!!! Sampson and Pearl????? If either of them were even considered for a Pitt job, I'd have to have Barnes and Gallagher checked for drugs.
C'mon now - what's a little show cause in your background? o_O

Bruce "freakin" Pearl? He's NCAA toxic and he is orange. think I'll pass.

In April of 2012 I spoke with Jim Christian when he was introduced as the new coach at Ohio University. I had on a Pitt sweatshirt and he joked with me about it since he was leaving TCU just months before they were to join the Big East. I asked him why he would leave a school that was about to join the best b-ball conference in the country and he said it was extremely difficult to attract recruits and TCU's entry into the Big East wasn't going to help a Texas school in that regard.
Jamie is in for a rude awakening should he choose to leave Pitt.
