In 1964, Xerox Corporation introduced (and patented) what many consider to be the first commercialized version of the modern fax machine.

Between 1973 and 1983, the number of fax machines in the United States increased from 30,000 to 300,000.

By 1989, the number had jumped to four million and an instant, secure method of transmitting financial and other legally binding documents becomes a viable option.

With the advent of email, UPS & FedEx, text attachments, and secure online document sharing platforms and clearinghouses, the fax machine is today essentially redundant for nearly all its use cases. Except one.
