The Grass Isn’t Always Greener

JD recruited some fine players to Pitt . Adams , Birch , JRob , Zanna , JJ Moore , Blair , Taylor , S & M (!) Young etc . Pitts current roster while greatly improved from the Stallings yrs doesn’t have any players that talented . ( JJ was a top 100 kid )

JDs last team with JRob , MYoung , Artis , Jeter would easily defeat this yrs team .

You just can’t forget had bad the roster was when JC took over . What would make any talented kid want to come into a program so depleted of talent as Pitt was . It’s to JC credit that he’s been able to rebuild Pitts roster in three yrs to where it currently is now . There’s still a lot of work to do and losing Hugley won’t help .

There was absolutely no chance Pitt could’ve hired a big time coach ,if they couldn’t do after Ben H left who in their right mind would’ve followed KS ?

Expecting faster results without an active booster group is delusional.

Will Pitt ever be a big dog in the ACC , I doubt it , but JC will get them into the second tier in time .
Lots of excuses. Not much return. Only Brown is a Stallings recruit. Only Champ is legit.

Think he has 6 yrs left , that’s a lot of money .
With 0 recruits so far for next year he should give some of that $$$ back. The lack of discipline is ridiculous. He has recruited a bunch of prima donnas that are about me, myself and I. I surely hope it gets better but last night was pathetic. JC needs to dismiss his brother after this year.

I’m looking at Pitts situation not as a fan but as observer of college bb . I want them to win as much as anyone , but I honestly believe that there’s no coach anywhere that was coming to Pitt after the KS yrs and instantly turning the program around without the help of an active booster group . We all know how dirty college bb is and if your program is in as bad shape as Pitts was convincing kids to come here and lose as opposed to going to winning programs , some of which provide extra benefits , is like climbing Mt Everest backwards .
I also believe JC is Pitts best hope in turning it around . Pitts not luring any great coach here and why would any of the hot young coaches want to come here when with patience they end up in better situations elsewhere. Pitts also not buying him out and then paying someone else 3+ million . Three words for yens “forget about it “ .
You don’t have to like what’s going on , but the powers to be don’t give a shit what any of us think otherwise Pitt bb would still be in the BE and JD would still be the coach !

You certainly aren’t suggesting staying in the Big East was an option were you?

No , because of the money . Both Fb and Bb programs would be far more competitive than they are in the ACC .

If Pitt doesn’t make the jump ACC, they’re essentially Cincinnati right now. Pitt would certainly be more competitive but, with fans, can you imagine the Pete getting filled for those marquee battles with UCF or Tulsa? I hope like heck that realignment someday allows us to park football in some Northeast super conference and send the rest of the programs back to the New Big East, but that’s science fiction at this point. The ACC is our home, for better or worse

This was never going to be an easy path back to relevance. Our lack of a legitimate ACC inside presence is really hurting us, as is some undisciplined guard play. But the level of alarm is a little much. This program went into a tailspin due to the neglect (mainly in recruiting) of the two previous coaches. Capel gets and extremely long leash in my opinion. We finish this year with a .500 conference record and it is still a decent step forward.

Dixon and Pitt both would have been better off if we put more money into assistant salaries and improved the facilities when he was here. He is struggling somewhat at TCU and we are clearly in a worse spot.

Dixon was leaving his Alma Mater for greener pastures. No amount of money was keeping him at Pitt.

I understand the necessity of their move , but I’d much rather see a bb conference with UConn , Georgetown , Villanova, St Johns , Syracuse etc . Those were great battles .

My wild speculation is that eventually Syracuse finds their way back to the Big East. Unfortunately, as much as I wish it were so, I don’t have as high of hopes that will ever be a reality for Pitt

There is too much money to be made right now in a Power 5 conference. Nobody is leaving a Power 5 conference to play in the Big East.

My personal thoughts are that the football powers eventually nuke the CFP/NCAA structure and stack the deck even moreso in favor of the big money schools/conferences. Pitt football is strong enough that they’ll probably be able to hang with the money, but the schools on the outskirts of the P5 are going to get hit at some point. Like I said, this is just a wild speculation of mine, but I don’t see the current P5/CFP structure lasting forever

More excuses. Does Pitt want to win??

Simply not true. He wanted to stay in Pgh. Barnes forced him out.
Barnes may have forced him out but he was leaving in a few years anyway. We can’t rewrite history. Jamie is always seeking the next big thing. If Barnes was not the AD then, Jamie would still be gone. It may have been that he left last year or the year before but he would not be here.

Nope.....you have no idea what he was going to do. If Jamie wanted the "next big thing" he would have gone to UCLA, NOT TCU. He told lots of people he hoped to stay here until retirement.
His agent did well to get Jamie raises...but the tactic of professing interest in other jobs stopped when he signed the longterm contract in 2011. Get a new crystal ball....the one you're using is defective.

NTOP, he was leaving his alma mater to go to UCLA but they would not pay buyout. I am not a Jamie hater but I know when patterns repeat themselves. He may have stayed a few years but if UCLA went fishing for him the same thing would have happened. He isn’t a saint. He is a business first college coach.

That is purely guessing. Not everyone is $$$ first. TCU wasn't by choice. His friend was AD at the time, but no longer. Barnes screwed him.....and screwed Pitt by not getting the buyout from TCU. Dixon stopped pushing for more money for himself. 5 years later and we're still a mess.

You are guessing as much as me. However, with the apparent difficulties we are currently having and a betting man might project another coaching change in 2-3 years, perhaps Mr. Dixon would be willing to come back to Pitt.

Nobody is claiming he was a saint -
He also isn’t known as a liar

I think, at the time of his departure, he was also seen as a terrible recruiter. But as time goes on, maybe we're just seeing that the water has found it's level with this program in the ACC.

To be fair TCU’s program is arguably in worse shape than Pitt’s right now. I wouldn’t say they’re a mess, but have definitely been on a downward slide for years now.
