They messed themselves up with the Offensive Tackle pass play call! They are at the NW 5 up 3-0, you have Connor, why outsmart yourself, run a conventional play with the conventional play makers, go up 10-0 there it's a different game. It's like the Steelers running a reverse to Cobi Hamilton on 3rd and 2 when they have Ben, Bell and Brown. Don't think so much?

Then, follow that up with Peterman throwing into triple coverage? he lolipops it into that, didn't he see his man was surrounded? There, you could potentially be going up maybe 17-3. A lot of what ifs, but basically true. The rest of the game was typical, pisss poor, useless. far below mediocre defense getting easily carved up.... we're used to that, but 10-21 more points, that where there for the taking really cost the game.

They were unconventional all year in terms of play calling. Just happened to not work yesterday.

Canada could not resist the temptation to take a victory lap on his season. He knew that ESPN would show & talk about his success as making Pitt a spontaneous offense.
The guy was not thinking Pitt football, Matt Canada was all about Matt Canada. Ego's are a very dangerous human trait. He is already believing his own press clippings & that is bad for any team or coach.
It may be best he's on his way somewhere other than Pitt. We need hungry, driven, focused people....

H2 PITT !!!

I like the call, but only when you're up by 20+ points. It was not the time for a play like this.

I didn't have a problem with it. We had great chances to score on 3rd & 4th down. We didn't & of course then our defense gives up a 99 yd TD drive.

Whatever, you didn't need an extreme trick play at that point.

Did they need to throw it to him in a scoreless game in the first quarter against Georgia Tech? Did they need to hand it off to him in the fourth quarter, down 8, against Virginia Tech?

That's a play call by an OC who didn't have to look at his boss in the eye after the game and explain the logic of the call.

It was first down from the 7. He called two other plays that should've gotten them in, Aston slips and falls short, then Conner loses control of the ball and can't stretch out for the TD.

A big part of the success of this offense this year was trick/unconventional plays. They don't always work. Fans love them (and the OC) when they do, hate them (and the OC) when they don't.

Moment...singular? that's funny.

I'll tell ya why it was a awful call besides the fact that it failed. He called a play that took forever to develop while there was no place for defenders to go. It was entirely too clustered & then to give all the pressure to your OT to make multiple executions like taking a handoff, running down the line getting under control & then having to stop & throw a well executed pass in traffic while ignoring a All ACC RB & multiple talented receivers makes it an awful call. The play took forever to develop w/ a OT being asked to make multiple very athletic skills...It was Canada showing off is what it amounted too.

Aston tripped over the goal line and it hasn't been seen since.

Bro, cmon.
It was an incomplete pass. That's all.

Pitt looked like an un-coached team of sandlot kids drawing up plays in the sand.
They couldn't even get the shotgun snap executed well.
It looked like the first day of spring practice.
They gave the game away to an inferior opponent b/c they couldn't do the little things correctly.

Nonsense. Pure B.S. The guy's human. We lost because 5 senior starters got knocked out of the game.

I agree, it was him showing off. They lost the game when they left so many points on the field early, and his being cute was part of it.

The whole team was clearly shaky at that point.

Slam JC, or use more straightforward plays that require basic execution. Get the team steady, break out the gadget play for when the team is better able to pull it off, NW is more on its heels.

Yep, agree with that. I wish we banged it in with Conner. Definitely cool seeing O'Neil getting publicity, but not with his arm. Clearly he throws about as well as my little daughter does.

Had the line( or so I thought) and the back and should of pounded the ball and control the ground game, Northwestern pretty well neutralized our line and pushed the defensive line at will. Like someone said it looked like sandlot football

Perhaps they would have been better off spreading the defense and then running the ball. I hate when teams bunch it up at the goal line. Why bring all 11 defenders that close to the ball?

Question- has our "jumbo" package with JJS worked his year? Seems like more misses than wins.

Blaming Canada, or saying that he was "showing off" sound like sour grapes over him leaving. Not tripping over your own two feet and holding on to the football cleanly would be two examples of basic execution that Pitt didn't execute on 3rd & 4th down.

Yeah, deal with your projections or drop the amateur psychoanalysis.

The point stands, the team was shaky at that point and it was simply not the time to get cute.

It wasn't cute. It's a legit play call that NW happened to have scouted, defended and we simply threw it away and went on to the next down.

The team was shaky the whole damn year. Thats why we are 8-5 and Pinstripe Runner-up.

Shaky?

The defense was playing well, and the offense drove right down the field twice.

The scored a ton of points this year due to Canada's creativity and play design. This one didn't work out, but it was still 2nd and goal from the 7. The plays on 3rd and 4th down should've been touchdowns.

In my opinion, blaming a guy for doing what he did all year is pointless. People are mad because it didn't work out. If it did, everyone would be singing his praises, as they did in the GA Tech game and the VA Tech game.

Throwing it to a former TE isn't that extreme, and a total surprise then, now you're trying the OT pass for the 2nd time and this player on a trick play for the 4th time, it's not as much of a surprise anymore.

They left upwards of 17 points on the field during the first quarter.

Henderson fumbled early, the center was rolling the ball back to the QB once every quarter or so, etc.

But, sure, they weren't shaky.

An OT throwing a pass isn't cute ...

OK.

Totally agree with the OP ... you have a big physical offense, early in the game you want to establish a rhythm and while these plays sometimes work when they don't they totally disrupt the rhythm. I've seen it many times, marching down the field at will then suddenly trick play that goes awry ... head scratching.

There are critical points in a football game that can send it one direction or another ... not scoring in that drive was one of them ... slipping at the goal line bad luck ... that was the infield side of the field footing was bad there all day

Well the illegal hit on Conner was one play that had an impact on the game.

Not calling the penalty was one call that had an impact on the game.

The play was also tipped off by No. 55 coming into the game - or at least that alerted NW that something might well be up...

Oh well.

Go Pitt

Not blaming the refs because in a 60 minute game you have to overcome bad calls but both injuries on mon-called illegal hits really hurt us especially the Peterman injury. That was definitely the B squad reffing that game.
