Something needs to be done to suggest change is on the way

Look - It will be hard for Pitt to be better than a middle of the pack ACC team, but you at least have to look like you are trying

Stop it. You think a guy who has never coached or recruited is just gonna step in and be a difference maker? I loved Krauser too but this is crazy talk.

You wanna hope for something hope that Pitino quits or gets fired and they can throw the bank at his assistant (whose name escapes me at the moment) who Pitt was rumored to be after a cpl years ago.

Pitino's top assistant is Ralf Willard.Or at least the pecking order on the bench reflects that. He's not coming back...

Brian Gregory or a guy like him. Multi-year head coach who may be out of a job and needs a place to land in order to stay in the business. I've said it many times here, look at KU (Norm Roberts), WVU (Billy Hahn), Duke (Jeff Capel), UNC (Steve Robinson), Louisville (Willard), UCONN under Calhoun (George Blaney) etc. Many of the top programs have an experienced former head coach to help with the day-to-day ins and outs and also in-game coaching adjustments. Guys who have walked in the shoes of a head coach are invaluable. Dixon had that in Herrion and look at the results when he was here. Pitt was never out x'd and o'd during those years.

The next asst. coach needs to be a recognized name that people will immedately believe will make an impact.

WTF are you talking about - You are decribing a Head Coaching candidate not Pitt's (and most other programs) next ASST. COACH.

BTW - For those who want to fire Jamie give us some names of coaches who will come to Pitt and stay here. And not use our program as a stepping stone for their dream job.

We do not need the same rovolving door coachin situation that has hampered our football team.

I am not happy with recent results - but Jamie has earned an opportunity to "fit" it.

You are 100% correct, and if JD does not think he needs one then that will be his downfall.

Don't get the hang dog attitude as regards how good Pitt can be in the ACC. Back in the day, the BE was better than the current ACC and we were close to the top of the heap. Aside from UNC, Duke and Loiusville, there's no unbridegeable gap between Pitt and any other ACC program. Changes are, however, needed.

Kenny Johnson was Dixon's first choice when Smoke was hired. Reportedly, Johnson was driving around and had decded to take the Pitt job when Louisville called him and made a better offer.

It is quite possible Pitino will be leaving Louisville one way or another and Johnson could be back on the market.

There is a bit of a disconnect in this subect though in our fanbase. Some want to replace our current staff with better recruiters. Others want experienced bench coaches for X's and O's and yet others want assistants who can "coach up" or teach players. There aren't a whole lot of guys who can do two of those things, let alone all three.

The ace recruiters are generally on the road 70% of the time or more and often rarely interact with the current players, except during "dead" periods. The veteran bench coach is a sounding board for the HC, but as a middle-aged, usually white guy, doesn't necessarily relate all that well to current players and almost never wants to be on the road recruiting.

Nobody has considered Dixon a strong recruiter since his days at Northrrn Arizona when he was Howland's main recruiter. It's clear thst recruiting must improve but as I've podted, it was the failure of several of our highest rated recruiting classes that lead to the current morass.

If Brian Gregory does get fired at GT, what are the possibilities Herrion comes back and Brandon slides down a chair?

Herrion, Knight AND Sandle would work for me (though this will never happen)

I think Sandle was a very important and underappreciated part of our success

People may say he did not want to recruit and they may say that an experienced coach like Herrion may not want to recruit but MAYBE we would be better off with one coach MOSTLY directing our recruiting efforts. Then there would be no fights over whose recruit deserves priority and we would end these (in my mind) ridiculous handoff recruiting efforts that Harve has referenced.

You may as well just fire Knight then. How frequently does an assistant get promoted to head chair, then demoted to second chair, and feel happy about it? Why is Herrion such a big increase recruiting wise anyway, there HAS to be other guys out there not retreads. I know the knee jerk is to want the guy you know, but there have to be better up and comers than that.
Didn't we basically kick Sandle out? What makes anyone think he'd want to come back? Would any of us?

How about a guy like Stan Heath? He just joined Christian's staff this past year at BC, and I assume that whole staff will be looking for jobs come Wednesday.

Does Knight have any title? Assistant or Associate Head Coach? There is no official demotion here. Look at the Pitt coaching staff titles on this site - Knight is the only one without a title.

If you go by the official site it lists Brandon as assistant head coach. He is right under Dixon, so I assume he is 2nd in command. I don't think there has been a named Associate HC since Herrion left.

OK, I was basing it how the post was phrased, it sounded like a demotion to the bullpen. Either way, he either needs promoted eventually or go on his way, unless he is happy being the 2nd guy, then by all means, keep him if he's important.

The fact we haven't had a #2 in a long time may explain why our teams seems to play so lethargically. I probably wouldn't be very energetic either.

I am sorry maybe there is some place on the official site that does that, but if you click on "coaches" - It lists Brandin as "assistant coach"

No you are 100% correct. My eyes must have wanted to see assistant head coach, but it does just say assistant coach. My fault, sorry for the confusion.

LOL! I see what you did there. Well played.

What responsibilities did each assistant have during our glory years? Use the same formula - just make sure u get the best possible coach for each role. The current format is not working.
