Tiger Woods

This isn't complicated.
Tiger gets coverage because he's still a star. Whether he's playing good or bad is meaningless- there are as many people rooting against him (even in his prime) as there were people rooting for him.

He was what Lebron James is now.

He hasn't been the same since his ex wife took a club through the back windshield. I used to watch golf because of Tiger's dominance...I now actively root against the guy...
Only on PANTY LAIR would people cut the legs off of the best thing that had happened to golf in many years.

They put him on because he is loved by many.
I imagine he has like 100,000 times more money than all the slugs that would
Comment like you have on this thread. Only a slug would client that " I shot a 85". You would not come close to a 85 on the pro circuit.

Some of you need a audience to fulfill your vacuum. Thus, the free board. Lol

Souf, spot on on Tiger.

Disagree souf. His star status has diminished greatly, due obviously to his poor play. Yes he is still a name but that's because of past accomplishments. He is bordering on irrelevant. The only reason he is being discussed is because his fall is almost epic. I actually like tiger, he has done more for golf than any person ever but people don't watch golf just to see him like they used to. Even Nike has transitioned its marketing away from tiger and onto Rory. The name tiger just doesn't sell anynore

Tiger used to be like the Yankees, Notre same football, something that either you love or hate but watch it none the less. Do people really gate tiger anymore? Maybe some still love him, the true fans but does he still invoke that passion from average fans? Besides fat house wives who have been cheated on before of course. Yes people openly enjoy his fall but the love for seeing someone fall from grace is human nature and not specific to him.

If someone shoots a 65 today, they can give a shot a hole to Tiger and still beat him by two. Yes, Tiger shot an 85 foday. To put that in perspective, when Arnold Palmer was finishing up playing the Master's in his mid 60's, he would still shoot like an 82.

An 85. I have shot better than an 85 before. Holy crap. An 85. Done. Toast. Never will win a major again.
Well he beat me by one....played my second round of the year (had a few range days under my belt) and shot an 86 at Williams CC in Weirton.
My one chance at bragging rights and that double on 9 killed me.

He's not bordering on it..he's not good anymore.

People watch him because it's still compelling: Will he snap out of it? How Far will he fall? Will he just quit playing? Can he get back?
Will tiger be a redemption story or remain fallen from his status?

It's the most dramatic storyline in golf..which is why the media covers him.

What else is there really in that really like that in golf, otherwise?

The only other interesting characters are Padraig Harrington and Bubba Watson, to me.

Yes, but he is not Lebron. Lebron is at the top of his profession, Tiger is a train wreck. Even though I am not a racing fan, Tiger Woods is now that wreck to tune into.

No doubt he is the biggest name, but he is not "like Lebron". Both transcend their sports, but now for different reasons.

Probably why I used the word WAS, ya think?

Lebron is the new version of Tiger, as far as being divisive regarding rooting interests.

Okay missed that. Actually, Tiger WAS bigger than Lebron ever was, because he carried the entire sport. As for divisive, I am not sure until Tiger's foibles he was that divisive, same with Lebron.

I don't get the Lebron hate (not aiming at you) but the dude outside of that stupid "Decision" show and the fact he is wildly popular has really done nothing to merit being disliked. I guess in Pittsburgh, we can understand that because at least along the East Coast and Detroit, Sidney Crosby is hated.

Tiger is a jerk. But when he was great, no one really cared, and then the whole wifey thing, and then he still remained a jerk......I think honestly a lot of people who covered or were involved with golf and had to suck up to him all those years are piling on now. Just like they did to Barry Bonds. It is easy to be sympathetic to someone's issues, we are all human, but when you are a jerk, then likely people won't cut you as much slack.

Oh I mean Tiger's dominance was divisive. I've heard probably more people talk about rooting against him, than those who were rooting for him during his prime. Lots of "he's bad for golf" type of comments...which...frankly...didn't seem on the level on merit.

His personal life unraveling made him MORE human, than the cyborg he seemed to be. But, I'm not a huge golf fan.

People ALWAYS want a villian and a hero.

Yeah, that is weird "bad for golf"? How so? That almost seems......well racist because I can't figure out how his (at the time) immense popularity would be bad for golf? Unless people were concerned that more of "those people" would be on golf courses.

That was my take..but, wouldn't want to post it for fear of being a "liberal pussy".

It's the only logical conclusion though.

And I am sure that is true unfortunately. (the racist slant on Tiger, not you being a liberal pussy lol) but.....I really think for the most part he transcended that (race).

He probably did transcend race in a lot of cases but let's not be too naive - there are plenty of people who wanted him to fail just because of his race. I know people who rooted against him (and still do) primarily for that reason. I think eventually more people were against him for the same reason people hate the Yankees,Duke, etc. - sick of seeing him kick everyone's arses.

Hell I wouldn't be shocked if any of the members of Augusta dam near swallowed their tongues when he won there the 1st time.

I respected him, but was never a fan because he seemed like an ass. And it turns out, he was.

Anyone that says tiger is bad for golf is beyond idiotic and probably a racist.. I hate playing the race card, usually mock anyone that plays it but in this case, they are.. What he has done for golf is more than any athlete has done for any other sport in my lifetime (im in my late 30's). Seriously, compare golf pre-Tiger and now, it's ridiculous. Purse winnings, market share, ratings, etc.. He basically introduced golf to not only a race of people, but 75% of the younger demographic. Laugh if you want but is that really that much of an overstatement??

Lebron is nowhere near Tiger.. Lebron would have to be doing what he is doing, and be of a race that 99% could have cared less about Basketball and now follows it. I couldn't think of a race and anytime I mention a race, I come off looking like Hitler so I'll let you guys pick one..

Again, I despised Tiger from his introduction to us til his banging a waitress from Perkins.. But never did I once think he wasn't unbelievably great for the game..

I'm a 7 handicap, drive 265 straight and 2 putt most of the time. Comparing Arnie and Tiger is insane because Arnie just was so consistent for so long. Tiger is all or nothing and he doesn't have all anymore. He is just like everyone else in the middle now and you see a lot of 80s for the guys not making the cut. All these courses are easier when set up for a Tourney from tee to fairway because the conditions are perfect and there is a ton of relief for equipment, stands, walls, etc. As far as the greens just forget it.I would 3,4 putt often maybe a 5 putt greens are insane and that is really where Tiger has lost all dominance. I have played all the top courses around the Burgh and have been in the high 80s and been thrilled. I'm talking crusty greens July fast. Tiger is freaking lost out there and has been since drug testing began.

There were more people playing golf before Tiger than there are now. Ask any local golf course. Don't get me wrong; Tiger is certainly in the top two all-time for Golf but the sport as a whole on a local level isn't better because of him.

This is true. I was remarking to my boss last week as we were traveling across Ohio and Michigan on some beautiful days that the golf courses are empty. I think this though has nothing to do with Tiger and everything to do with our new Hyper society where people just don't have the time. I mean parents, parents attend their kids practices for gods sakes (no wonder why kids are so effed up) the constant tethered to work via electronics, just people are no longer playing golf. If you look out on the course, it is 65+ and that generation is dying off. Golf is in trouble, it is why Dick Sporting Goods ran into revenue problems a few years ago. Tiger's absence hasn't hurt, but let's face it, his audience was never the hard core golfers.

The county has been running ads on the radio for the golf courses at North and South Parks. Can't remember them doing that before. I play SP some - it's a good deal and it's not crowded if you go at the right times.

One reason that play is down has to be the slow pace of play. Too many golfers imitate the pros and do things like taking way too many practice swings, and I've seen guys lately doing what Furyk does - getting over their putt and then backing off for another look -- give me a break... Slow play takes all the fun out of golf...

Go Pitt.

I'm sure tons of people hated Tiger because of his race. However, I wouldn't lump the racists into the same category as the people saying that he was bad for golf.

In any sport, when a person or team dominates, there is a vocal segment of the population that claims they are bad for that sport (even though it is usually completely untrue). In almost every case I can think of, a dominant team/athlete increases ratings and drama, except for Jimmy Johnson in Nascar.
