Trib with a Two-parter on Pitt trying to play with the big boys

You have to be a troll. No way you believe what you say in real life.
No you are the troll. I have never had a single exchange with you until you personally attacked me in this thread. It's all above in black and white. The facts support my views on the last admin. They were so incompetent as regards athletics; they couldn't get it of their own way. The press got this absolutely right and now the sheep are up in arms with their revisionist history trying to exonerate an executive who committed perhaps the worst act of cronyism ever seen in extending Pedersen's contract.

You've had plenty of exchanges with me. The facts support my view of the last admin. They weren't perfect and made errors (Pederson contract extension), but they left Pitt in an unbelievable spot where the new admin can continue to help it grow. When they arrived in 1996, Pitt was not in a good spot what-so-ever.

Unbelievable spot- teetering on the edge of irrelevance. The last admin will be known as buffoons for all time.

Getting back to the original topic, Sherrill made the most import point in that it all starts at the top. Without that commitment, you cannot succeed in your sports programs. Finally Pitt has this and it's starting to bare fruit but it will take time. Donations are up due to this. Right or wrong, in the past I have quit giving when I felt that the University was making a half-assed commitment and I'm sure there were others who did the same. As more people see the value in donating, then it will increase.

We were a laughing stock in the early to mid 90s. Big time laughing stock.

And this administration has decided our throwbacks will represent this Era of pitt football

Between hiring stallings and this uniform cluster.......I'm waking up in a cold sweat all over again.......

Well then you must have subsisted in a constant sweat with the previous buffoons in control because they gave Pitt no chance to succeed.

Maybe Nordenberg cared for and was committed to athletics while also not being particularly good at it - at least the hiring of personnel part.

Nordenberg will be remembered as one of the greatest chancellor's of the University of Pittsburgh.

Under his administration he significantly elevated the prestige and academic status of the entire University. For example, Pitt now has outstanding and highly coveted Programs in the Health Sciences (Medicine, Dental, Pharmacy, Nursing, Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Clinical Psychology ETC.) In Fact, ALL of Pitt's Health Programs are nationally recognized and ranked in the Top 20 (US New America's Best Graduate Schools) Programs in the Nation.

Endowment Fund Raising: Pitt under Nordenbergs leadership has increased Pitt's Endowment to over $3.6 Billion which would put Pitt in the Top 25 of US Universities.

Nordenberg in recognizing that for every dollar brought into the University approximately $0.95 comes from Research and Development while Athletics brings in just $0.05.

Nordenberg under his guidance significantly increased the Research and Development prowess of the University of Pittsburgh. Pitt, one of just 62 elected members of the American Association of Universities (AAU) now has approximately $900 million in annual Research and Development expenditures.

Under Nordenberg's administration Pitt was able to maintain a highly successful Basketball Program.

With respect to the Football Program and for Pitt athletics in general his greatest accomplishments were in his work in helping to maintain the AQ status of the Big East Conference (with the defections of Miami, Virginia Tech and Boston College to the ACC).

Nordenberg's final legacy to Pitt Athletics was getting Pitt admitted into the Atlantic Coast Conference which will significantly raise Pitt's Athletic Funding now and in years to come.

For all of the above accomplishments, I have to say THANK YOU for all of your work as the CHANCELLOR of the UNIVERSITY OF PITTSBURGH.

HAIL TO PITT!!!!

No he won't. He will be remembered for the good he done, and the bad , and that won't change. He was a horrible football administrator

Thank you Chancellor Nordenberg for all of your efforts and accomplishments on behalf of the UNIVERSITY OF PITTSBURGH.

HAIL TO PITT!!!!!

I don't disagree with that at all. I also think he was a bumbling fool as far as our football team, and we are on a football board. Maybe you can praise him in the science fair and new dorm room board or something. Did you thank him for stealing about 2 million of Pitts money and giving it to Pederson, as a horrible way to hand him a golden parachute? I'm sure we could have used that 2 million

As a member of the Big East Conference Pitt was always financially handicapped with respect to their ability to pay for head coaches and staff salaries.

Now with ACC membership that will no longer be the case. Nordenberg put Pitt in a position to make great strides going forward.

Thank you Chancellor Nordenberg for all of your efforts on behalf of the UNIVERSITY OF PITTSBURGH.

He'll be remembered as you described by the clueless members of the Board of Trustees who rubber stamped every decision he made because they got a free lunch every quarter at the University Club. As far as the denizens of Heinz field and his impact on the FB program, he will be universally seen as a nimrod who when he delved into athletics administration and personnel decisions, he was far outside his area of expertise but too short sighted to recognize it.

Making the FB program great..... Your statement explains precisely why Pitt FB has sucked since another egghead drove Jackie Sherrill out of the HC position. Hopefully the entire generation who had anything to do with Pitt FB before Gallagher will be gone soon- they are collectively clueless and have embarassed the university.

You can't measure in dollars the damage Pitt's reputation suffered because of their embarassing performances on the FB field and their ridiculous shuffling of coaches. All that is lost on the eggheads and the chancellor they adulate. As the press reported in bold print : Nordenberg didn't value FB. Only buffoons would try to repudiate that conclusion.

Pitt's reputation as a stellar University has never been higher.

Nordy hides when he goes to the FB games now at Heinz and surreptitiously enters and exits the Pete- he knows he's viewed as an incompetent weasel in many circles. ...deservedly so!

Nordenberg did value athletics, but first and foremost he didn't ever want us to be embarrassed by it. By that I mean either the performance of the team (72-0 vs OSU), NCAA violations, or the conduct of the team (see Fred Primus). He also valued cost control, which is extremely difficult in football, and he left that to Jerry Cochran & SP. Lack of support from donors contributed to that as well, but it's fair to state he didn't value athletics enough to spend what our peers were spending. Think back all the way to Walt. How many assistant coaches went in and out of the program every year for better paying lateral jobs? Those don't get headlines, but it hurts continuity in recruiting and overall. There are millions of examples of lack of institutional support I could give, but I don't feel like typing it all out.

I would say Mark oversaw the rise from pathetic to competitive. The current administration has a much bolder vision going forward for the department as a whole. Here's hoping it works out.

Factually incorrect regarding spending .
Spending was not the problem for athletics at all . The annual multiple million subsidy and irs data shows we spent relative to peers just fine .
I've literally posted this data dozens of times .

Revenue has always been out albatross .
Not spending .

We didn't spend what the people we were competing against spent. That's a ridiculous notion.

No, we didn't, and one of us would know. Here's a hint...it's not you.

My source is what is commonly referred to as "firsthand". Arguing with you is a complete waste of my time so I'm just not going to do it. Have a nice day.

You presented no data. You posted a link. Everyone knows we spend less on things like staff, recruiting, marketing, etc than schools we aspire to compete with. The fact that you want to debate this is pointless.

Do we spend less than alabama , ohio state, notre dame, etc? certainly. and we ALWAYS will.

Do we spend compared to ACC /BE/ WV and other peer schools. Absolutely.

I'm not going to spoon feed you the data, again. I've literally posted it dozens of times over. There's the link. Go fish.

Pederson and that administration still has defenders, that's pretty sad, considering the state of the football program when they left.

If by defenders- you mean people who can look at objective information and form a rationale conclusion which is in start contrast to stupidity- sure.
And by the state of the football program..you mean..bowl eligible. Sure.

Take a break from typing for awhile. let your brain catch up with your fingers.

Yeah they only brought the football program back from oblivion, made Pitt basketball nationally relevant on a consistent basis, built one of the nicer on campus arenas in the country, upgraded the non revenue sports venues, steered Pitt into the ACC when musical chairs was being played and first and foremost Nordy exponentially increased Pitt's academic standing and reputation.
