USA Soccer thread spring/summer 2023

That’s the second class finish by Ferreira in this tourney. Gotta give him his props.

It absolutely was.

Of course he also had maybe the best chance of the game in regulation and shot it wide, and had another open header in the box that he shot right into the keeper's chest. And of course the shootout attempt.

Ferreira and Roldan with the shootout misses. Can’t say I’m shocked that they are the two that missed.

That said, I was sure Miazga would miss too and he buried his. But at least I can say that I once saw Miazga score a goal for Chelsea. It was in the preseason but at least he can tell that story for the rest of his life.

And of course when Lalas said Turner was definitely going to make a save (or2?), I figured Panama would make all of theirs.

i liked having cowell, vazquez and zardes up front. just didn't workout.

panama was better in just about every aspect of the game.

Forgot to answer this. I wasnt thinking that when I was talking to the guy as I figured it was some SoCal baddie (isnt that the new term now?). But reviewing the conversation, he didn't explicitly state the gender.....but its Cali so maybe that's not allowed anyway 😁 He just said a friend from college who I assumed is female.

Anyway, interesting crowd from that game.

Probably 70% Americans of Europeans descent rooting for the US.

25% Americans of Hispanic descent rooting for the US

5% others of Hispanic descent wearing other soccer apparel such as Euro club jerseys, a few El Tri jerseys, etc.

Not enough Panama fans to register a percentage. I saw less than 10.

It was pretty cool to see so many fans/families of probable Mexican descent rooting for the US. 10 year old Mexican-American kids in Pulisic jerseys, that kind of thing. I've heard that USA/Mexico week in those elementary and middle schools are like 1930s, 40s, 50s, Yankees/Dodgers in NYC.

Pitt PSU day in my youth.

There are still 6-7 US players waiting to see where they will end up for 2023-2024.

Here’s an article on Tyler Adams future at Chelsea. I still think Aston Villa might be a better option. But there may be a path at Chelsea.

Tanner Rosborough from Beadling and West Allegheny made the USA U15 team which is playing in the CONCACAF Championship this week. He made the move to NY Red Bulls last year.

My son played at Beadling with his brother. I remember that kid as a toddler kicking the ball around on the sideline.

So Romano reported the other day that Chelsea opened talks with Adams. I figured it was as an insurance policy in case they can’t close the deal with Caicedo. Now it looks like he’s saying that talks are ongoing and is independent of the Caicedo negotiation. I’m not sure how I feel about this. Chelsea needs depth in their midfield, but this has the appearance of Adams being a backup. With Chelsea not playing in Europe this year, there won’t be many minutes for him as I see it.

Arsenal turned down a formal offer from Monaco for Folarin Balogun. Supposedly they are looking for a fee of over $60 million for him.

The shits getting real now. Love this move for my club and it’s depth. Don’t necessarily like this for our MNT captain.

I'm not sure why there even needs to be talks between Chelsea and Leeds. Adams has a relegation release clause. Pay them the money and he's yours. Refuse to pay the money and why would Leeds say yes?

Yeah he’s agreed to personal terms and is ready for his medical. So not sure what’s going on here. Chelsea also submitted a 40 million bid for another defensive midfielder on a relegated team.

Chelsea is hijacking Lavia’s deal to Liverpool. So this is nuts.

It seems as if Chelsea saw that their plan to throw a bunch of money at the team with no regard to how the players would (or would not) fit together and be able to play together was a completely failure, and the lesson they learned from that was that they should go out and throw another truckload of money at a bunch of players with no regard to how the players will (or will not) fit together and be able to play together.

Lesson for the rest of us, it must be really nice to have billions of dollars.

They are light at the pivot/double pivot or however Poch deploys his #6 and #8. So they need to sign a couple. I don’t know if these are just added negotiations meant to help them in the Caicedo negotiation? Because he’s the top prize. They could be signaling eff you to Brighton, we have had enough of your BS and we will just go hijack a Liverpool deal and get a guy for half the price.

Chelsea is stockpiling youth. Everyone they sign is 16-20 years old. Adams is the outlier in this whole thing as he’s 24. My concern is they are stockpiling youth at all the same positions and none of these guys will have a clear path to the first team. I guess they think things will shake out when all these kids go out on loan.

Done.

Adams probably making some nice coin. But probably a reserve. Ugh.

Adams 20 million fee and Caicedo a 90-100 million fee.

Bologna has made an offer for Cade Cowell.

Caicedo to Liverpool for £110m. Which comes out to almost $140 million. Which seems like a lot.

It’s an English record transfer and a complete change in Liverpools transfer policy. I’m ok with it. I wanted Caicedo for my club but he’s not 90 million better than Tyler Adams. Liverpools gonna have a bounce back year it appears.

Only posting this Caicedo stuff because it directly impacts Tyler Adams.

This was two hours ago…

And this was just now…

Personally I kinda hate it. To me it’s bad business. If you’re a chelsea fan, you know how Brighton have dominated Chelsea in the front office over the last couple of years. We’ve loaned players to them who were very good players for them, and then we overpayed for lemons like Cucurella.

This is why it’s bad business. Chelsea opened the bid at 50 mil. Brighton said no we want 80. Chelsea came back at 60 mil, Brighton said we want 80. Then Chelsea comes back at 70, and Brighton says no we want 80 no less. Chelsea comes back and says ok we will bend over and pay 80 let’s get the deal done, the player has wanted Chelsea since May. Brighton says nevermind, Rice just signed at Arsenal for 100 mil. We want 100. Chelsea says 90 final offer. Liverpool comes in and offers 110.

This is nuts. Spurs is getting 100 for Harry kane, but Brighton is getting 110 for Moises Caicedo? The only winner here is Brighton, Liverpool is overpaying but they will be loaded. Chelsea is the loser because they showed they will pay whatever it takes for a player they want.

As someone new to soccer it’s simply stunning the amounts of money tossed around. As unknowledgeable as I was I still new how big it was in the world. But had no clue what the financials were. It’s hard to even believe.

And those are just fees between clubs to do the deal. The player wages are separate and also need to be agreed upon to the tune of hundreds of thousands in salary per week.

But with the fees for new players, a club has outgoings that generate revenue too. So a club in good position makes money on outgoings that pay for the incomings. It’s how Chelsea has done it for years. They make money on what was called their “loan army” by having many players on contract and loaning many many players out each year. Chelsea, while spending a lot, also loaned and sold a lot, therefore their “net spend” have always been significantly less than the Man United’s and Barcelonas of the world.

But right now this new chelsea owner, who owns the Dodgers, has spent probably a billion dollars in just over a year and doesn’t have near the outgoings.

Funny that this chelsea vs Liverpool battle for this player is between the dodgers owner s and the Red sox owners.

If this were true, and I don’t know if it is, but if I’m Chelsea, I’m selling Adams to Brighton at a huge mark up.

Oh I know I got that much at a high level - I was speaking on the financial whole.

No clue about the inner workings/details but that the additional info makes sense.

When a club loans do they get money from that? Or do they just get salary relief and that player who isn’t being used off the books?

I thought the team paid a smaller fee for a loan but maybe they don’t.

And who pays the salary is different in every deal as I understand it. Sometimes the parent club still pays the salary, sometimes the receiving club pays the salary, and sometimes the salary is spilt between the two.

Lol. Id keep him for 20 mil. Play hard ball with Brighton. But I guess Brighton is not done making Chelsea their bitch.
