** I’ll start this story tonight with 2 minutes remaining in the game when James missed an open jumper and Ryan got the tip in to give the Panthers a one point lead.

** My almost always highly positive friend who I sit with went into an anti-James tizzy at the time, saying he never wanted James to shoot it again.

** Of course, I reminded him that it was a good shot, but he countered that nothing James shoots is ever a good shot. He wanted anyone else shooting it. Maybe Jamel or Chris, but not James. I reminded him that James was shooting 4-10 at the time, and he was playing really well, but that mattered not.

** So in those last two minutes, Jamel and Chris missed threes.

** But after Wake hit a three after a botched play with a half minute, I told my Son to gather his coat and we moved to the end of the aisle until James hit a three to tie.

** So I moved back to my seat and smacked my friends’ head a number of times in jubilation.

** That was the first time I almost left this game.

** When Ryan Luther missed both foul shots with nine seconds in OT #1, I told my son, let’s go, we are leaving for sure.

** We stood near the TV just next to the exit elevator awaiting our final demise. But instead, James stole the ball and got fouled. I said to the dozen or so others watching there, “did we just see that?”

** Of course, James only hit one, and the game went to OT #2. My Son asked, “what are we doing now?” “Back to our seats!” I replied, a bit to his dismay.

** With 1.1 seconds to go in the final OT, as Mike went to the line for the last time, I said to my Son them, “Now we can leave.” “No!” he demanded. “We are staying to the very end!”

** This was certainly one of the weirdest games I’ve ever watched at the Pete. In no way was it satisfying or even moderately pleasing, but it was oddly fun.

** Fun enough, that it was memorable enough for me to say that I was certainly very glad that I was among the remaining 4,000 or so there at the end, even if I barely made it there.

** It was memorable enough because the much maligned James Robinson played as well as he can play, which in this game made him a leader and a difference maker. Because of James, for the moment anyway, we are still in the tournament. It was points, and big shots, and huge rebounds, perfect ball handling, steals and steadiness.

** Oh, and 1,000 points for his career. Congrats James.

** A couple games ago, if I didn’t say it, I certainly thought it. That is, I didn’t think Chris Jones should be on the court anymore.

** And since that time, Chris has scored 39 points in his last three games. Shows you what I know.

** What we all know is that the Panthers need better guard play to play better. They got that, even though it didn’t mean that the whole Panthers' team played better. But it was enough to carry the day when Mike and Jamel didn’t look ready to carry the day

** I should add that Jamel looked to relax a little and play better in the second OT. And congrats to him for also scoring his 1,000th point.

** Still, Mike and Jamel combined for 12-32 shooting with 8 turnovers. It’s clear that teams are going to double both of them and make others on the Panthers beat them. Against Wake, that’s what happened. Well, barely.

** We barely won. And we are barely still in the tournament. But we did win and we are still in the tournament. That’s the reality I hope all Pitt hoops fans will join me in embracing for now.

** I certainly get it that if we play again like we did tonight, we will probably lose all five of our remaining five games. That’s the other reality for all Pitt Hoops fans.

** Early in this game was some of the absolute worst defense I’ve seen this bad defensive Pitt team play all year long. I mean … we surrendered 32 points in 21 possessions minutes in the first 12 minutes. That’s simply off the charts bad on your home court against a team with just one win in 14 ACC tries.

** But somehow, we only surrendered one more point the rest of the half.

** And somehow we managed to win this game. Somehow, we are still alive to get into the NCAA Tournament.

** Somehow, we still need to win three of our next five. But five hours ago, we needed to win four of our next six. So there’s that!

** I just hope I'll be staying to the end for the Louisville and Duke games too!

DT, I sent our buddy Harve an email yesterday and we commiserated back and forth about what is going on with this year's Pitt team. Don't know that we came to a conclusion; all I can say is that I sincerely hope that the team/coach/program can find its identity. You hit the nail on the head when you said: "This was certainly one of the weirdest games I’ve ever watched at the Pete. In no way was it satisfying or even moderately pleasing". I left off the last part of your sentence, because for me, anyway, it wasn't even oddly fun. And I'm not saying that to be a critic; it really isn't a whole lot of fun to see your team struggle like it does, game in and game out, to play to their capability. As I said, Harve and I could not agree on exactly what the problem is with the Pitt BB program. But we definitely have one. Obviously a loss tonight would've killed any chance in making the NCAA's. But with Duke, Louisville, and Syracuse coming up in the next three games, we will have to leave "weird" in the locker room

Pitt played NO defense at all at the beginning of the game. Then there was a stretch at the end where they were in every Wake player's face, active and aggressive. I looked to my wife and she said "imagine if they played like that the whole game".

I said the same thing to my friend. It almost seemed like they "got it" for a few minutes. Forced a couple of shot clock violations, even! Would love to see them build off of that, but somehow I'm not real confident.

If we can beat Syracuse on the road that would be so huge given we will probably lose to both Duke and Louisville. In my opinion that would keep us in the NCAA field with obviously a couple more games to go before the ACC Tournament. However if we lose all 3 I think it's safe to say at that point we'd be on the outside looking in.

I'll be honest and also state that I have no clue what to make of this win against Wake at all. Yes a win is a win. But if Wake shot FT's even a tad better we lose this game and it wouldn't have even been that close. It seems like some of the team puts 100% effort in while a few guys put 20%. That makes a big difference. If I'm Jamie I really don't know what to do about it since most of those 20% guys are kinda our leading scorers. Should they be benched? Who knows. What I do know is that having to go to double OT to beat a 1 win Wake team at home shows how much Pitt basketball has really fallen off.

I do like many others, want to acknowledge the clutchness of James late in the game. Sure he missed a few shots but he really came through tonight, both offensively and on the defensive end. If the whole team gave that kind of effort game in and game out, we wouldn't even have to be sweating Pitt getting into the tournament right now - we'd be safely in for sure(Miami game prime example).

At some point later in the season Louisville, SMU (and maybe even Dan Majerle's Grand Canyon team) are going to lose a bit of intensity without a chance of playing in the tournament. Hopefully for Pitt, Louisville is starting to fade a little when they come to the Pete.

They just lost another player for the year too, a center.

That is not reality. That is just Panther fan hopes. We are 9th in the ACC with games at Syracuse, VT and GT and games with Duke and Ville at home. I say it is a small hope at that.

DT raising your son to be a Pitt fan will teach your son more about adversity than any lecture or other experience can teach them. Both me and my two daughters have done that dance many times of leaving then staying. Have been in the foyer watching the big television then running up the down elevator to watch overtime.

Wolf, I have one daughter too, 3 years old. I need some advice, how do you survive the whining about everything??? That being said, this board helped prepare me somewhat.

These guys avoid physical contact at all costs. Watch how they off-ball screen... err... shadow screen. Explains why they don't want to block out. Then their chemistry issues lead to uncontested shots since there is no help defense. They would rather wave their arms after the play and look at each other.

Death spiral.

Time. In 4 years, she won't spend enough time in the same room for you to notice it. Been through it 4 times......the little ladies grow up. Just take the opportunities to do fun things, now. DVR the games you don't attend. Play Candy Land for 3 hours straight....it'll make you appreciate your chance to be a Dad.....and silently curse Parker Brothers.

I missed the first half because we were coloring. Good times.

Your response indicates that either you completely missed my overall point, or stopped reading at this spot.

My very next words were as follows: "I certainly get it that if we play again like we did tonight, we will probably lose all five of our remaining five games. That’s the other reality for all Pitt Hoops fans."

But if the tournament was selected today, we would very likely be in it, and that is indeed the reality. Too bad the tournament is selected in a couple of weeks though.

I'm jealous.....my granddaughters are in college. Try not to overreact to the whining....just makes it worse. Change the subject, it'll buy some time.
I should write a book, huh?? First 30 chapters on my mistakes, 2 chapters on the things I did well. All 4 turned out just fine. Luck counts.

Moe, I've kinda given up on trying to figure this team out. Instead, my focus is to enjoy whatever good can come from this season.

You think you've got enough content for two chapters?;)

Maybe only if I'm ghost writing. :D

Pull out the coloring book-god therapy for you and her. I recommend the crayola 64 big box, my favorite!

Good decision....sorta like the CBI games!! I missed the game last night, family duty. Late in regulation, I told Mrs. to just turn it off, I was done. She scolded me about the fact that I NEVER leave early, regardless of how bad it may be going. As usual, she was right. She'll tell the early departees: "Thanks for coming!" They just look down, in embarrassment.
I learned my lesson in 1970. Down 35-8 halftime vs. the hoopies. Never again.

What's strikes me is that young and artis look disinterested for the most part. But every third time they touch the ball they get this look in their eyes that says: "I must score on this possession, the basket will be worth 8 points." then they dribble into traffic and turn it over. Artis did it late yesterday and there was a really awkward angle shot young took from the baseline that had no prayer. They're our best players, but they're not dominant, they can't just take over when the mood strikes.

For now buy her candy. That's all she wants. What I told my daughters as they got older is that if you want to go to see Pitt win a National Championship you will most likely be disappointed. Better to go and relish having some fun experiences. Unless it's the Scotty Reynolds game and it blew my only chance to see Pitt in a Final 4. Whoops, got off track there. Not that I am bitter or anything!

I'm filing this away- it's called a declaration against interest.

If today was selection Sunday, they would be taking nine ACC teams.

The bad news for Pitt is that today isn't selection Sunday.

This was never going to be a year we made the Elite 8 or even the Sweet 16. We beat a team that played hard once they realized they had a legit chance of winning late in the game. We need to get the confidence back with Young and Artis no doubt and they NEED TO STOP DRIBBLING THE BALL IN TRAFFIC.

A guard salivates thinking about a 6’8” guy dribbling in traffic!

Just about every "bracketologist" has us in at the moment. Lundardi has us as an #11 seed, one of 8 ACC teams in at the moment.

It's pretty simple. We win 3 of the next 5, we are in.

if pitt wins three of the next five, the tone will be very different on this message board

unfortunately 3 out of 5 seems pretty unlikely based on recent history

Seems very unlikely to me. But I'm surely hoping for it!!

Wake is a bad team, but they have given good teams tough games. Pitt is not a good team, but they beat Wake.

For as poorly as Pitt played on defense, I never had the feeling at the end that they were going to do something similar as giving up a tap-in to a 5' 10" guard. They seemed determined not to let that happen.

Robinson had great stats, but did he pass the eye test?

If you go to a sporting event stay till the final buzzer. Even if the outcome is obvious, you may see something that you may never see again.

Last night, he definitely passed the eye test. If someone only watched that game, and never saw any other game in his career, they would conclude that James Robinson was an all-american point guard who hits clutch shots and always makes key plays at key moments.

You do know I was kidding, right? Of course he passed the eye test.

People can argue the definition of clutch all they want, but I will say this about Robinson: over the course of his career, he has usually elevated his level of play in late-game pressure situations over his normal level of play. Some people may say that is damning with faint praise, but it is good to play better than your normal with the game on the line.

Today I think we'd barely get in but most likely as usual lose in the 1st round by double digits. When your leading scorers are all pouting and sulking and not giving their all, it's hard to beat any team(as witnessed last night).

And, unfortunately, THAT has become the story of this season.

Last year we had Louisville down in the second half, got tired and lost and then the season fell apart.

This season, the Ville b*tch-spanked us early, stole our lunch money and the team fell apart, again.

We don't have great talent by far, but we have enough we should have been in the NCAAT if these guys had kept their heads screwed on straight. Instead, they have p*ssed away what should have been a decent recovery season and possibly killed the program.
