I understand that these conferences want to protect their top teams and would rather they represent the conference in the NCAAT but for the life of me I will never understand why they don't have an "auto bid" game between the tournament champ and the regular season champ. If the regular season champ wins the conference tournament, then no auto bid game needed. Let all members know that their arena needs to be available on such and such date for a potential neutral site auto bid game that will be played somewhat equidistant between the 2 schools.

I had an idea for a 96 team NCAA tournament. Unfortunately, it only works if there are exactly 32 conferences. Basically the conference tourney champs get byes to the RO64 and the preliminary round consists of the 32 regular season champions and 32 at-large teams. The winners of the prelims would then get a place in the 64 team bracket which would be seeded from scratch.

This would be the best way to give everyone what they want. The regular season now means much more to the mid and low major teams, and since most of the "extra bids" are given to those leagues, the value of the regular season isn't diminished that much at the power conference level. And of course, the NCAA gets more tournament games to sell to TV networks and additional ticket revenue.
