I guess even DT had enough of Pitt basketball for 1 night after that awful 2nd half.

Yup. I don’t blame DT. It’s hard to come up with good stuff to write as he always does for a game like that.

Hard game to write about.
Pitt was the second most talented team on the court yesterday . WVU was bigger , stronger , more athletic and shot the ball better . Only way for Pitt to beat better teams is if they play poorly like FSU did or Pitt shoots the ball really well . Neither of those conditions existed
yesterday . From what I saw if those two teams played 10 times I’d bet on WVU every time.

Huggins actually coached. He went in at the half and charged up his look. Had his big guys play back more near the basket. Totally threw us off and Pitt had no answers. Capel and his staff made no adjustments and really hasn't done much coaching at all imo. There's a reason Bob Huggins is a HOF.

Sorry. It appears you and I were posting almost at the same time.

WVU was better coached and had Oscar. Culver did nothing. There is no reason for McCabe and Matthews to badly outplay X and Trey or to lose McNeil for 3 easy 3s in the 1st Half. Pitt doesn't even looked like they are coached.

Put Oscar on Pitts team and let’s see who wins that game .

You’d rather have Pitts roster over WVU ?

So anytime Murphy pops in a few threes it’s the opposing coaches fault for him getting open and knocking down the shot ? Good players find a way to get open and deliver .

Our guards are clueless and extremely selfish. Trey and Xavier.
X and Trey are playing off instincts and they don’t trust the other players on the team. And they are right to not trust them except Murphy. That’s really the result of not having and structure to an offense. We have many players standing and not getting open in the places and areas they have the skills to be trusted to do something well. Nobody should be shooting any 3 point shot let alone from more than 15 feet out except Murphy, Trey, and TB.

Stop saying this. Oscar isn’t on Pitt’s team. This staff is going to have to rely on winning recruiting battles and they’re not doing it right now.

DT dribbles fouled out after that egg Pitt laid last night. The one thing that struck me watching is how similar it was to watching the Steelers on offense the night before.

Last year WVUnbeat us, but I was impressed because we showed great fight. They were blocking our shots but we kept attacking the rim. We were not intimidated. Can't say the same for last night. Looked a lot like we were resigned and almost quit.

There not winning the recruiting battles with their top priority guys because those guys unfortunately have better options right now than going to Pitt .
When you have better players it’s easy to out coach your fellow competitors, which was my point with OT .

So you can only recruit well if you win? By that theory, no rebuild anywhere would ever happen

At some point the coaches need to do their job and win recruiting battles that, in your skewed perspective, they shouldn’t.

No , I believe JC will eventually win a few , but you need to get that first one big one . For those that remember Curtis Aiken was all everything out of Buffalo and was Pitts first big time recruit under Dr Roy the next yr came Smith and Gore ,then Lane etc . You need to get the first one unfortunately JC doesn’t have the help of the Golden Panthers to break through . JC needs to win some big games this season , why play for a loser if you can go to a winning program ?

With the help of an active booster group you don’t have to , which doesn’t exist at Pitt . Or if your THE school in your state or area that kids grow up wanting to go there . WPa best players have all chosen to go elsewhere lately ! Pitt needs to win !

ps ..or hire Penny !

But you can’t win in the ACC without really good players... the kind other good teams want. But by your theory, it’s impossible for us to get those. So are we screwed?

It would take 10 games to realize that when you keep trying to score at the rim and have the ball slammed back in your face maybe it is time to try something else.

Unfortunately Pitt has no perimeter game except for Murphy .

I think it will be a longer process for Pitt to rebuild its bb team into a contender in the ACC than most fans perceive . Four or five yrs is my guess at the earliest . They need upperclassmen who’ve been in the program for 3-4 yrs , not grad transfers or jc guys . The only shortcut I can see is if they get really lucky with an under recruited kid who comes in and becomes a special player . An X or Trey with a deadly perimeter game .

This team could've used Horton this year.
But the team is not yet a team.
No trust,
Reminds me of guys who don't like to pass because they don't think they'll get the ball back.
Then that infects the whole team and now everyone feels like that.
We need a bunch of games against lesser teams to get this right.

That is correct. If Oscar was on Pitt, Pitt wins and Pitt is probably an NCAA team.

Why do this? If Kobe or Lebron was on the team we probably would of won as well. Why stop at just one player? Hell if we had Zion and John Stockton we might of won. We have what we have and this other stuff is wasted 0 and 1's.

Uhhh, Curtis was a good player, nothing special. I doubt Chuck & Gore came to Pitt because there was a 5-10 gunner in house.
What we're seeing now is that Capel may have been the nominal chief recruiter, but "K" closed the deals. Jeff has no closer. It's all on him.

You don’t know Pitt bb history very well , Curtis Aiken was an all everything out of high school and was a great get for Pitt at the time and he was the start of the influx of great players to Pitt . Now without the intervention of the Golden Panthers none of these guys would’ve ever gone to Pitt . Pitt also never wins the national championship in 76 without the GP either . The point is you need to get the first guy in the door . That hasn’t happened yet for JC , he doesn’t have the benefit of outside assistance !

It just amazes me that posters on a Pitt bb board just underestimate how difficult it is to recruit great players to Pitt . The few D1 prospects in their backyard all go elsewhere and for the last 8 yrs they’ve been mediocre at best with the last 3 being horrific . There’s no active booster group to assist in acquiring players , they play by the rules , they actually make their student athletes go to class ( like they’re supposed to ) . Pitt bb is a hard sell , even when JDs team were highly rated (#1 ) and a top seed in the NCAAs they didn’t land elite level players .

There’s a reason JC got a seven yr deal , he’s here to rebuild Pitt bb and do so the right way by playing by the rules . As we’re seeing there’s no quick fixes when you play by the rules and your without a great local talent base . He will continue to get better players and will eventually turn Pitt into winner and a program where better players will sign with . Pitt isn’t Duke nor will they ever be , and if you don’t want to give JC some credit in Dukes improved recruiting during his stay there who cares . I doubt that Coach K would agree .

Okay cool but his coaching thus far has left a lot to be desired wouldn't you agree? We have 4 head coaches sitting on the bench and our offense is a hot mess without any kind of gameplan.

Can you game plan around shooting 11% from the field ? At some point it’s upon the players to execute . Pitt lost to WVU because they had no answer to Oscar and that they just lack players with consistent offensive skills . They won’t have too many games were they shoot so poorly ( hopefully ) , but from what we’ve seen so far this season no one other than Murphy can be relied upon to hit the open shot .

ps ..it’s early yet maybe GD or JC step it up and X has only one way for his game to go

Well because you can win and do your own thing. Again, you are addressing the issue without even realizing it.

Georgia had Rivals 6th ranked class this year. They were 2-16, 11-17 overall last year. USC had the 9th ranked class and were below .500 last year. Illinois got a 5 star Center from NYC by way of Africa. ????

Don't bother. @Fsgolfdr has set up the perfect mental framework. Pitt can't get good recruits because they were bad. Other bad schools get good recruits because they cheat. Pitt won't cheat. But they can't get good without good recruits. But the can't get good recruits because they were bad and don't cheat.

It's the perfect worldview to justify being a perpetual basement dweller.

Yeah......I don't get it. Yet, in his own post he admits that we started to get Aikens, then Smith and Lane, etc.....and of course, you had guys (Chipman then Evans/Cal) willing to go hard after kids.

I know there is this morality play amongst fans here, that more like seem like a blanket of justification, much like the olde Penn State football guard (success with honor), who can explain their lack of competing for championships because they were doing things the right way.

I know and love the saying right is right, even if no one is doing it, and wrong is wrong even if everyone is doing it. BUT......we are talking about recruiting players to try and win basketball games. There are absolutely no harm in playing the game, a game that EVERYONE ELSE PLAYS!!!!!!!

There is no Lady Byng Trophy at the end of the year for college basketball programs.

I'd be interested in DT's take on the freshmen. I honestly probably psyched up their athleticism up too much in my head and all look slower and/or more "below the rim" than I was hoping. I was hoping I guess for more like "raw athletic power with limited basketball skills that can grow" and...I am not seeing that.
