Why does the PG say we beat #3???

Clemson was number 2 in a bunch of polls including the playoff pole. Are they trying to make it like penn state's win was bigger vs oSU?

Right. The PG (and most other newspapers) subscribe to the AP. So they use the AP rankings for their own stories. Otherwise you'd have two stories on the same game, one from the AP and one locally written, that would use a different ranking for the same team. You'd have one story that says number two Clemson and another one that says number three Clemson side by side.
