NC simply outshot us in this game
24-62 38% from floor, we were
27-72 37%, no big difference, Right?
They made 7 threes and we made 8.
NC however 7-19 for 36%, while we
were 8-30 for 27%. Ok, so far so good.
The killer was FT's, NC was a very hot
26-31 for 83%. That's GREAT FT shooting
at any level. We were 10-16, 62%.

Here's another killer. We outrebounded
them on the offensive glass 22 to 14.
The problem is our two bigs are just
not that good, and can't get put backs.
We make a few, but miss them at an
alarming rate. We basically get abused
every game by the other team's Bigs.
Don't be fooled by our rebounding #'rs.

Some good news, Harris is playing far more
in control the last two games, Our TO's
are lower...14. Harris had 3.... MUCH better.
Hayford also had 3, but her 3 were in only
10 minutes of play. Harris played 31 minutes.
After the last game I posted I wasn't worried
about Harris's shooting the past few games.
Today.....5-9 Fg's, 55%, and 4-4 FT's, 100%.

I hate to say it again....get Hayford off the
point! What would I do? Easy....put Everett
on the point when Harris goes out. For
now Hayford is an accident waiting to
happen as a pg. She's a good athlete and
should play elsewhere.
IMO we have good athletes, and I still say.
we need more King, and Strothers. Coach
is playing them more...Good!
We're getting there....patience.

Bottom line, they got to the line
just about twice as much as we
did. That says plenty about the
play on the floor. Not only that,
they made them at a far better
rate.
26-31, 83.9% is fantastic shooting.

If only we could convert our
offensive rebounds. Now there's
a perfect example of statistics not
giving a full and realistic picture.
We get 22 off the offensive glass.
That looks like total domination
inside, but in fact what it reflects
is a lot of fg misses, and worse yet,
our bigs can't convert their put backs.
NC had only 14 offensive rebounds,
but they had a big who COULD convert
their put backs.

To put some numbers on that, Pitt had 22 offensive rebounds and turned them into 18 second chance points. North Carolina had 14 offensive rebounds and turned them into 19 second chance points.

One of those is a pretty good conversion rate. The other is, well, not.

Exactly! That's the very point I've
been making. Coach's post game
comments show he's happy with
the rebounding #'rs. He's right about
seeing those #'rs. Unfortunately
those numbers only tell part of the
story. You put a Big on this team
that can convert those off. rebounds,
and we're a totally different team.

On another note, you ought to use
how those stats in this game could
change the plus minus discussion
you're having on the thread on the
guys side of this board. LOL

I watch the women play. You are correct that this team can not win consistently with Rita I playing sizable minutes. Plays decent defense but that is it.

I think the coaching staff has done a good job raising the talent level. However, at some point you have to beat an under .500 NC team at home. And except for a late run the game wasn’t close.

I listened to the post game show and I thought I heard a lot of excuses from Associate Head Coach Terri Mitchell. She said the players should be encouraged because they played NC close. (Stats wise yes, score wise no). And that NC beat ranked NC State. I keep hearing reaches like that in the post game comments. We are getting there. Etc.

Eventually your talented freshman and sophomores have to start winning games. Or they don’t have the talent level you think. Other teams have freshman and sophomores as well

The last winnable game of the 5 remaining is at BC. And then the ACC play first round game.

If they were only to win one, if it was not for Covid, then this staff would be on hot seat for next season. But even with my critique, you don’t know how a full uninterrupted season would have progressed. So really any judgement of hot seat is delayed.

I don't see a "hot seat" scenario for Coach
White. He has upped the talent level as you
mentioned. However we're in the ACC and
that talent level and even more is there on
all these ACC teams. I believe we could have
won a few more ACC games but our inside
game basically is non existent. Right now
IMO we're playing without a decent big.
Every team in this league exposes us on
the inside.

What we do have is a group of pretty
athletic players who are hustling and
seem to have good attitudes while losing.
I don't see us that far off if the coach
lands a legitimate big. A transfer would
be an immediate help.

It took a while, but it seems like Day is getting better at kicking passes to open shooters.

I think our bigs, while maddening on offense, are still a big upgrade over what we’ve recently had — and they are progressing, though slowly. If Day had a sure-handed big to dish to, the offense would be more effective.

Another big is their current recruiting priority.

Also, while other teams play sophs and Freshmen, this team doesn’t have a really good senior or two, like many teams do...

Next year, when the team will have a significant senior and several significant juniors, will tell the tale about the coaching, IMHO...

Go Pitt.
