Womens volleyball to the portal now

If Pitt wants to win some championships in sports, they should just use the NIL money for everything other than football and basketball. It will go a LONG way to securing Olympic sports players, but will do almost nothing to keep football players that other programs really want. Heck, Pitt has been using football for a while now to get funnel money to fund other sports teams, might as well do it with NIL, too.

So.those husker fans are closely watching the bottom line?

No. But if your Olympic sports team is losing money, like 99.9% of them do, that means you dont have enough fans. And if you don't have enough fans, that means, you dont have enough boosters who are going to pay the salaries of these Olympic Sports athletes. Now, could the UC-Riverside girls soccer team have 1 billionaire booster who pays the girls 50K/year? Sure. But there are very close to 0 of those examples.

I have no doubt they're paying NIL to some of the volleyball players. Frankly, it's money well spent as they are the winningest team in the athletic department right now. They had close to 9k in the Pete against Louisville and the place was rocking.

Who is paying it? Alliance 412 is only for football and basketball. You have to make a special selection if you want it going somewhere else. I think they even make you contact them as they arent set up for that. I dont remember when I signed up. Volleyball has been a great story but their total fanbase (as in people who legitimately watch most games and care if they win or lose) cant be more than 1/10 of the men's basketball team. They just arent going to have enough fans willing to pay them.

There probably arent 5 olympic sports programs, total, that make money and can afford to buy players:

Nebraska volleyball
Wisconsin volleyball (maybe)
LSU baseball
Cant think of any others off the top of my head

NIL bags arent going to Olympic sports athletes.

how about Iowa and Penn state wrestling
im sure others can chime in

This is getting ridiculous.

Why is it ridiculous. Cat walked at Senior Day. Looks like a normal grad transfer.
If a tree falls in the woods and nobody sees or hears it did it happen… Who Cares. Nobody cares about women’s sports other than the participants and their parents.
Believe it or not, some people enjoy watching things that aren't football or basketball and enjoy seeing the University do well in all sports.

So, these collectives have a "legit" component and a pay for play component. I would guess that the football and basketball players are getting pay for play. Whereas the Olympic Sports athletes are getting paid "real NIL" as in looking for real legit NIL opportunities for them such as camp counselors, youth camps, etc. If Alliance 412 is paying an Olympic Sports athlete significant money then I want out. If there's a few boosters who want to fund Olympic Sports athletes, that's fine. But I dont want general fund money going to the sports that dont matter to most Pitt fans.

Why do the moderators struggle so mightily to move these topics to the appropriate board? This entire thread should be in the Olympic sports board.

Where would your post about GTA belong?

Not trying to be a dick, but making a point. Nobody’s forced to look at anything. Olympic board doesn’t get much traffic so sometimes this stuff gets discussed here.

Not interested? Move along.

It's almost as if the first two words of the thread title were not "Womens volleyball".

Good for you, you are a real hard ass bro….
Just being honest
I donate to academics and athletics
I’ll let the corps find the NIL since that’s the intent on NIL
It’s not for fans to donate to it
I’m happy if the players are considered employees so my donations to pitt helps pay them

But , I won’t play this NIL game

I think you need to change your view. College sports in the NIL world is now professional. Donating to NIL is sort of like your chance to become a part owner of the pro franchise. You invest and your money can have a direct impact on getting players under contract to play for Pitt. The better players on the roster, the better the team will be.

Then I want a % of revenue generated then as a part owner
Its nonsense

NIL is an improvement over the bagmen in the shadows but isn’t the solution
Pitt can actually use my money .

Let’s make them actually professionals by having the schools pay them .

PSU absolutely buys wrestlers as do other B10 schools.

PSU wrestling makes a profit. Probably Iowa too. I said there's around 5.
you listed 5 here’s two more

again I basically ignored you until you disparaged me over 1976 Pitt, 3rd team qb playing significant portion of season, of which you for some reason had zero knowledge , I am now on the side of 95% posters here

Thanks for that info, I just started following volleyball and didn’t realize the extent of nil involvement.
I remember a couple of years ago when Kayla Lund said that every member of Pitt's Women's Volleyball Team had a NIL deal.

These young women athletes in college volleyball are influencers to young girls all over the country who aspire to play in college also. As such, there are companies that we may not even know exist (Women's sports gear and apparel, cosmetics, sports nutrition, etc) who want to reach their target customer through these athletes' social media followers and offer them NIL deals to accomplish that.

This is some of what I remember Kayla saying back then in an interview.

Well, you missed the one school that actually has used NIL to buy the last two NCAA championships: Texas.

Last year, all 6 Texas starters came through the portal, and all six were stars at their prior schools who reportedly got pretty substantial NIL money to transfer. This year, 5 of them were on the team. The interesting thing is that for the last three years the Texas coach has recruited two highly-touted freshmen each year. And, they have gotten very little playing time.

Nebraska hasn’t used the portal that much. The only starter they got out of the portal was a first team AA though. Two of Nebraska’s players from last year already are in the portal. They signed 4 freshmen even though they didn’t have 4 players run out of eligibility, so the coach probably knew he was going to force some players out.

More volleyball players entered the portal last year than FB players, so it’s not a new phenomenon. Fisher has gotten Julia Dalton, the outside hitter ftom Missouri whose name I can’t recall, Serena Gray, Bre Kelley (injured most of the year), Emma Monk, Logan Moseley and Courtney Buzzerio out of the portal.

The girl from Missouri is Leketor Member-Meneh.

When you’re football team is 3-9 you start caring about women’s sports.

If Lia Thomas is playing you care about women’s sports.

I wonder how many guys would care about women’s volleyball if the players wore long pants.

Pitt could go 0-13 and I would not care about women’s Volleyball.

I dont even know who Lia Thomas is?

Less.

Pitt volleyball players cannot possibly be making much money from real companies. How marketable is a college volleyball player? Perhaps there are a few volleyball boosters who pay them and that's great. Just dont use my Alliance 412 donation for it.

I mean more people attended a PItt volleyball match at the Pete than for almost any basketball game and more people watched PItt in the final 4 on television than almost any PItt football or basketball game.

Clearly football and men’s basketball are much more valuable products - but volleyball is gaining popularity quickly and catching up with Baseball as sort of the most popular 3rd sport .

Also- as is typical - ignoring women and teenage girls as consumers is just dumb. I’ve spent no small amount of money on PItt gear for my high school aged PItt volleyball obsessed daughter - and judging by the crowds at the Field House and the Pete- I’m not alone.

It’s a smart bet - IMO - for PItt to invest in volleyball.

All of this. Women's volleyball is the fastest growing sport in the country, right now.

Took a buddy to the Louisville game. He had never been to a volleyball game before. Couldn't believe how exciting and entertaining it was. He ended up going to the first round game on his own. He admitted he would have never guessed that the games were that fun and was glad to have something to root for with just about every other Pittsburgh team being a hot mess right now.

You don't want to know how much my wife paid for a volleyball ticket to see the Elite 8 match against Louisville at the Fitzgerald Fieldhouse. It's more than I've ever spent to go to a Pitt sporting event. She didn't get those $15 tickets that went on sale before the round of 16, she waited and had to buy on the secondary market and it cost her, big time.

I had to explain to my kid that it was, go to that game or play travel ball this winter. Okay, isn't quite that extreme but the secondary market was nuts.

What's a "real company"? A lot of college athletes with decent social media followings have deals with companies that have no connection to the school, if they have followers they'll have companies out there wanting to pay them.

You no longer have to worry about where your money is being spent.

I called the Alliamce.

They have agreed to give you back your $5 donation.

I’ll add this - I bet 60% or more of the volleyball crowds are under the age of 25 - not including students . You certainly can’t say that for Pitt football and basketball. The Louisville match at the Pete had to be like 75% girls 14-22.

It’s interesting- PItt’s official volleyball instagram page has more followers than men’s basketball ( less than PItt football )

And - my daughter knows every volleyball player - and can’t name a single football player .
