only loss a close one to a good WVU team. Yes, no great wins. Towson was the only decent win but this team has exceeded my very low expectations. I had them at 6-7 with blowout losses to WVU and OKST.

The ACC is very tough and 0-18 or 1-17 is not out of the equation but these guys are better than I though. 4-14 or 5-13 would not totally shock me.

Whether you like him or not, to this point, Stallings is getting the most out of these guys. And we are seeing glimpses of what could be a pretty good team eventually in a lineup of

Carr
Stewart
Davis
Stevenson
Brown

I can't believe I am saying this but I am actually a little encouraged with the immediate future of this program. I wont predict victory over Miami but as i said in a previous post, a win over them on Saturday really wouldn't shock me. They are on the level of OKST and not as good as WVU

Three things that would help our chances:

1 - Good officiating
2 - The return of Ryan Luther
3 - An off game by Newton

Good officiating?
I probably worded that improperly.

What I meant was if any team gets an edge in the calls that are made, Pitt needs to be on the plus of that or at least even. We can not afford to lose any points due to officiating.

I would be really discouraged if Luther came back this year. I want him to redshirt so we have a better chance to do something next year.

I feel the exact opposite. I want this years team to play with the best roster possible and to experience as much growth and success as possible this season.

I also do not want to delay the needed development of our current bigs or the real need to recruit a physical big just to be marginally better next season.

I (very much) agree.

Honestly they are exceeding my expectations. That doesn't mean they are good either but my expectations probably could not have been any lower than they were.

I think Carr, Stephenson, Parker, and Davis can all be really good players. Hopefully one of two of the bigs develop.

Where I still do have concern is the 18 class is simply not good enough at this point and I don't see them adding anyone of significance at this point. Golden and even Kingsby seem to be good adds but they really needed a top end talent in this class and I don't think those guys are that.

2533,
Ez to overlook the addition of Ellison. He may be a starter.

Good point. Hopefully he will have a big impact. But I am not sure he is the impact type player that we are all hoping for. I see him a solid addition who can help the team, probably even start but not necessarily going to be a primary piece like a Carr. But maybe I am underselling him.

I think Ellison is probably Chris Jones......but Jones would have been a nice 8th man on a good team. However, there is the chance he could improve beyond a Jones level.

Yeah no offense meant to Jones but if Ellison is going to help this team with any significance he needs to be better than Jones.

But I do agree that is more the level he is at which is more than fine on a good team. But on this team, I was hoping for more for 2018.

We became a good program by landing players who generally speaking were not top 100 recruits or were rated just inside the 100. We got the kids here, and then watched them develop over the four years they spent here. We did sprinkle in some higher rated talent over the years but it was limited.

Stallings is slowly getting us back on schedule. With Carr, Stewart, Davis, and Stevenson from this class looking like players as freshman, this is a good start. If the transfer, and the two we have for next year, look like good players who will develop, we will be on our way. The key is development, and these kids have alot of time to play together, and get better.

If we turn the corner next year, and get back to near 500 in conference, I believe Stallings will land some kids that are higher rated going forward. The whole key is, will these kids continue to look better night in and night out with more experience? From what I have seen to this point, I think the answer is yes! Even TB and Peace have shown me flashes, and if they get in the weightroom and work, they could be helpful by the time they are juniors.

It is going to be a tough ACC season, with alot more downs than ups, but I will be looking for growth from these kids, not wins and losses. We can pay more attention to our record next year. In any event, I think our downturn in the program is not going to last much longer, and the crowds at the Pete should start growing again at some point next year.

I think the line of thinking was that Jamie didn't need Top 100 recruits to win with his defense/rebounding philosophy. But Stallings DOES need Top 100 recruits to win with his offense-first philosophy.

You have to have a good coach to win with recruits in the 75-150 range. You can do it, but stallings is not that guy.

And I would say there is ample evidence showing that is true.

But we're getting top 150 and top 200 guys with Stallings. For him to be even marginally successful, he needs top 75 and top 50 guys. He's not getting them. Oh sure, he gets one guy who is barely outside the top 100. One guy, that's it. He MUST do better than that in order for him to succeed. He can't and won't win with guys who play with the emphasis on good college basketball and rebounding and defense. He's not that good of a coach. And even if he does get a couple of top 50 guys, there's no guarantee that he'll win. He hasn't in the past.

Back around 2003-2009 that was correct about our former coach.

No, more than anything, he couldn't get his recent recruits to play high level D or rebound at dominating rates.
