The Morning Pitt: 9/17/2024 - Who are Pitt's top five players?

Pitt's 3-0 start has been built on a number of outstanding individual performances. But which players have been the Panthers' best so far this season? On today's Morning Pitt, we're ranking the top five (or more) players on the team through three games.

OT - Pens ......

Sidney Crosby just signed a team friendly 2 year contract extension with the Pens worth a total of $17.4M over the two years ($8.7M cap hit per year), NMC, 35+ contract because he gets a signing bonus after the first year ....... so he is signed for the next 3 seasons.

Next up contract wise likely working on an extension for Marcus Pettersson.

Pens camp starts in 2 days (9/18/24) ....... a lot of decisions to be made on who makes the Pens NHL roster to start the season.

Predictions for Brawl

I'm sure the team is feeling confident after last week's comeback, but after the first play on Saturday that all goes away.
I don't have that much confidence in Pitt's defense yet , although I am liking how Rasheem Biles is playing.
West Virginia will come prepared. I think Kade Bell will have a few wrinkles up his sleeve.
I hate giving predictions, just wandering what everyone thought ?
I think it will come down to the last quarter, and hopefully Pitt will pull it out .
Line down to 1.5

Advanced Box Score vs WVU

Postgame Win Expectancy: Pitt 51%, pretty much a dead-even game

-Unlike against Cincinnati, Pitt had a much better average starting field position.

-Pitt obviously had trouble running the football and the issue falls mainly on the Oline. 2.2 Line Yards per Rush but 1.6 Second Level Yards points to running backs doing well, but not getting any push up front.

-Defense played much better than against Cincinnati, generating 21.1% Havoc rate against WVU vs only 12% against UC. This improvement was mainly in the secondary and it paid off with the turnovers.

-Offensively, the second and third quarters were atrocious with Success Rate of 17.5% and 25%, respectively, with 0% success rate on passing downs in the 3rd. Fourth quarter was an absurd 71%, with 100% success rate on passing downs. The offense was actually a bit more consistent last week against UC, but we have yet to really put together a complete game on offense.

-Pitt was more explosive on offense than WVU, and that was pretty consistent throughout the game despite the struggles in 2nd and 3rd quarters.

-Eli Holstein was by far the best player on the field and is why Pitt won. His best game so far at 23.4 Predicted Points Added, which is even more incredible since he had -3.6 PPA in the 3rd Quarter.

Pitt keeps finding a way

Pitt delivered another improbable rally, roaring back from down 10 late in the fourth quarter to stun West Virginia and prevail 38-34 in the Backyard Brawl.

With just over 3 minutes remaining and the Panthers facing second-and-30, quarterback Eli Holstein heaved a ball into the end zone. Jumping over triple coverage, Daejon Reynolds came down with a 40-yard touchdown reception -- his first catch of the season -- to pull Pitt within a field goal. After forcing a quick punt, Pitt came right back, and Derrick Davis Jr. scored the winning touchdown on a 1-yard plunge with only seconds remaining.

With last week's 21-point comeback victory over Cincinnati, Pitt became the first FBS team since 2020 Tulsa to overcome double-digit, fourth-quarter deficits to win in consecutive games, according to ESPN Research.

A team with this much resiliency could become a surprise factor in the wide-open ACC title race
