Tonight's game against VMI

I don't know much about VMI admittedly, but I see Pitt is favored by 31.5. VMI does look like they have scored alot in their wins, and they are 4-1. However, I assume this game won't be too difficult. I do hope we see more of Delalic that we have and they get him more into the swing of things before LSU Friday. Anyone have any other thoughts on tonight? Is there anything that we should be concerned about tonight?

Article Is Pitt facing a QB decision heading into the final two games?

Heading into the final two games of the regular season, Pitt might be facing a decision at quarterback.

With redshirt freshman Eli Holstein on the sidelines Saturday due to an injury, redshirt junior Nate Yarnell led the Panthers against Clemson in what ended up being a hard-fought 24-20 loss. But Holstein’s impending return could leave head coach Pat Narduzzi and offensive coordinator Kade Bell with a decision to make:

Do they turn back to Holstein, who started Pitt’s first nine games, or do they stick with Yarnell, whose start on Saturday was his first of the season?

Overall, I like the direction things are going

Pitt loses that game by 30+ last year. Clemson obviously has a boat load more talent and Pitt took them to the wire.

Now I still think that Pitt is capped at an 8-4 average, but I think Pat still made the right change going to a guy like bell. Yesterday showed the scheme is sound as things were open all over the place.

You have to address offensive talent though. You absolutely also have to address the o line above all else. I think if they have even slightly better o line play they win against both UVA and Clemson…I think that is the major difference right now.

Either way, I said I was giving Pat a hard reset with bell and I’ll stick to that. If they finish 7-5 this year and go 4-8 next year, well that is a different story, but I really think that they are in a decent spot moving forward, at least relative to what I think Pitt football can really be.

Video and transcript: Narduzzi on the loss to Clemson, this week's game at Louisville, the QBs and more

Pat Narduzzi held his weekly press conference on Monday and talked about the loss to Clemson, this week's game at Louisville and a lot more. Here's video and a full rundown of what he said.

If we can manage to drop only one non con game

That should really lock us in to a position, IF we are treated the same as teams last year, where even if we go 11-9 in the ACC you should be solidly in the field.

Of course, I do expect different treatment of ACC teams than other conferences come selection Sunday, but I am hopeful because Clemson did basically lock themselves in during non conference play last year.

In any case, some combination of wins over WVU, OSU, LSU, Wisconsin, or UCF really should elevate our profile go a point we feel pretty good.

Seven straight years of having problems with penalties for Narduzzi

This shows Pitt's ranking for each year under Narduzzi. How could it possibly be this bad every year?

Can't have 13 penalties in single game like yesterday. You won't win many games that way.

Ranking/Total number of teams
109/133 2024
127/130 2023
115/129 2022
87/130 2021
114/127 2020
121/130 2019
102/129 2018
3/129 2017
50/128 2016
19/127 2015

Procedure penalties by game

With all the talk about procedure penalties - after admittedly a very bad game on that front - here's what this season has looked like on a game-by-game basis.

False starts/illegal formations/illegal shifts/delay of game penalties on Pitt's offense:

Kent State - 0

Cincinnati - 0

West Virginia - 3 false starts (Taylor, Mumpfield, K. Johnson)

Youngstown State - 2 false starts (Enos, unspecified), 1 illegal formation

North Carolina - 1 false start (Lee)

Cal - 0

Syracuse - 0

SMU - 1 false start (Cooper)

Virginia - 2 false starts (R. Williams, Enos), 1 illegal shift, 1 delay of game

Clemson - 3 false starts (Collier, BJ Williams Bartholomew), 1 illegal formation, 1 delay of game

So that's 17 total procedure penalties on Pitt's offense through 10 games - with 9 of them coming in the last two games. I don't think that uptick in procedure penalties is unconnected to the changes in personnel, particularly at quarterback (where a new voice can change how the cadence is perceived) and on the offensive line.
