Pitt Basketball is Fun

Man. Don't get me wrong. Last year's ACC championship was awesome! Sauce time! But I fell in love with Pitt through basketball. And I'd probably willingly condemn the football team to 3 win seasons for eternity for a hoops natty (Yes - I know both can be good!). And seeing this team win back-to-back top 25 games is just so fun. I missed this so much. I don't know if a collapse is coming or if this team will make the tournament or what. But I'm going to take it game by game and just enjoy the ride.

Hail to Pitt, baby!

Big time win

-This now becomes the best win of the season. UVA played well. They played good offense and really good 1st half defense. To come back after being down 12 and 13 points against a team like this is big time stuff.

-We were lucky to be down only 10 at half. Clark outplayed Nelly, Burton struggled with the pack line D and Fede did not play well. Nike gave us a huge lift and kept us in the game.

-I knew this game would be tough for Burton because of the way they play D and because they were going to put Beekman on him and he is a very good defensive player. But JB did not force too much, let the game come to him and picked his spots.

-Nelly had a rough first half and struggled to guard Clark. He played a flawless 2nd half on both ends of the court.

-Fede, like the Carolina game, had a bad first half, but he really had a super last 15 minutes on both ends of the court.

-Hinson had a solid offensive game and hit 2 big 3’s, but his D on Gardner was huge. Gardner was not effective and they ended up going with Van Der Plaus more and that helped us greatly on the offensive end.

-This team and staff have done such a great job of adjusting and making changes as the games progress. This trend started after our losses in Brooklyn and continue each game. We have now scored over 40 in the 2nd half in 11 straight games.

-This team plays hard, they play tough and they now deserve everyone to jump on board and start filling up the Pete again. Let’s start on Sat.

Only moved up 3 to 68. Incredibly, our RPI is 44. Using 44, we would he pretty safely in if the field was announced today. Using NET, we really wouldn't be very close.

The NCAA never released their formula for NET which upset a lot of people. I suspect there reason for not releasing it was so coaches couldn't game it. I'd like to see someone reverse engineer it because some of these discrepancies are remarkable. For example, James Madison is 43 in NET but 108 in RPI. RPI isn't even factored in anymore so we all may be setting ourselves up for disappointment. Even if we go 9-7 to finish 13-7, it wouldn't seem like our NET would move up that much, perhaps not much higher than 60 especially considering we may well lose 1 to FSU/Lou/BC

A sign of balance...

Perhaps the one thing I took away from Friday's game is that it's not just one guy that can lead this team on a particular night, but rather they have options. Capel sort of talked about, 'it could be your night' in his press conference.

Well...

In Pitt's last five games, the team has had a different leading scorer each game.

Vanderbilt: Elliott, 20
Sacred Heart: Cummings, 24
North Florida: Federiko, 22
Syracuse: Hinson, 25
UNC: Burton, 31
