ACC bowl game predictions - post yours here

There's not a lot of inside info to go on at this point when it comes to bowl game projections, so I figured we could all post ours here and see what shakes out. I'm going with this for my guesses on the ACC's top 10 bowls (as of Sunday afternoon):

Orange Bowl - ACC champ - Clemson
Cheez-It Bowl - vs Big 12 - UNC
Duke’s Mayo Bowl - vs Big Ten - Duke
Fenway Bowl - vs. AAC - Syracuse
Pinstripe Bowl - vs. Big Ten - Pitt
ReliaQuest Bowl - vs. SEC - Wake Forest
Holiday Bowl - vs. Pac-12 - Louisville
Gator Bowl - vs. SEC - Florida State
Sun Bowl - vs. Pac-12 - Notre Dame
Military Bowl - vs. AAC - NC State

What are your guesses?

EDIT: I forgot the Military Bowl. I'm also going to flip Pitt to the Pinstripe, put NC State in the Military Bowl and send Syracuse to Boston.

A thought on Calijah Kancey

You've probably seen Calijah Kancey's announcement that he suffered a season-ending injury and had surgery on his shoulder, thus preventing him from playing in the Miami game and the bowl game.

What's particularly interesting about this is, Kancey's announcement seems to say that the injury and surgery are the reasons he will not be playing in the bowl game - which kind of implies that, if he had not gotten hurt, he would have played. And maybe I'm reading too much into it, but if he would have played in the bowl game...I don't know, maybe he's still considering coming back next season? I think it's unlikely and I've operated under the assumption that he would be leaving for the NFL, but it's still interesting that he seems to be suggesting that he would at least have been willing to play in the bowl game.

Maybe his plan was to finish his Pitt career in the bowl game. Who knows? Just seems interesting to me.

Pitt could be back in ACCG in 2023

A lot of roster comings and going to be sorted out, but looking at our schedule, the path is there. We have debated a lot about the dumb scheduling of CINCY/WVU/Notre Dame in the same year, but those are all non-con games. Our conference schedule is manageable:

Our road conference games are: Duke, Syracuse, Wake Forrest , and VT with Hartman gone from WF. Those are games we can win.

Our home conference games are: Boston College, Louisville, North Carolina, Florida St. Cunningham will be gone from LOU. If Maye leaves UNC, we have real shot to go 7-1 in conference. Not saying we will but the conference schedule is about as good as it can be with no Clemson, Miami, NC State. It's a shame Florida St decided to get good again now and couldn't have waited a couple years.

Edit - If we did go 7-1 in conference play it would probably include beating Florida State and losing to Boston College...that's the Pitt way!

Attendance

Did anyone hear the attendance figures for the men's soccer and women's volleyball games yesterday? We had soccer tickets. Arrived late and had to stand for the entire match. There were fans everywhere.
Also, the usher at the Pete indicated Pitt was expecting 2,200 fans for the volleyball game. Seems that number was low compared to the actual turnout.

NIL COMPETITION

went over to the NC State Blog board this morning to see how they were taking their BB loss to Pitt from yesterday and came across the following write-up: All NC State scholarship players will receive $25,000 in 2023. Their only obligation is that once a month they will have to spend some time at a charity or business in the area. How do you compete for recruits when each and every year you will have to match or exceed those types of offers. Remember those types of targets will be moving upward all the time. 30K 40K 50K etc etc etc.

Michigan

Routinely going with 2 TE, 3 TE, extra lineman, and using FB’s often.

And they are dominating Purdue, just as they dominated Ohio State and Penn State

It’s all about QB and OLine play. I know we bash Cignetti for being antiquated, but I know this is the offense he WANTS to run, but personnel dictated that he couldn’t

Hate me all you want, and I definitely prefer the higher volume spread offense too, but Cigs system CAN work. Just have to hope he finds the players to make it happen

Lincoln Riley and The Transfer Portal

47-24.

A friend and former client who is very well connected to USC football at a very high level (the kind of connection that only is developed through huge donations) told me earlier this week that USC is “actively recruiting” more than a dozen players who are NOT in the transfer portal. Of course, that is totally against the NCAA rules, but Riley doesn’t care one whit about that. NIL has been a godsend for USC and Riley has had another year to learn how to exploit it.

Right after the interception by Utah, my friend texted me that by next week the number of players contacted probably will double. Riley has been telling the major booster/donors for weeks that they need to strengthen their OL and doing it with HS recruits takes too long. Presumably most of the active players they are surreptitiously recruiting now are OL. But, a lot of defensive players will likely be added after tonight’s performance.

It’s really not that hard. This is my speculation on how they are doing it, but I think it’s well-founded: You are a school in sunny LA with a thriving entertainment industry, the headquarters of every major talent agency in the country, and USC also is the home of the Stephen Spielberg film school. An agent approaches a top OL at, for example, Michigan or Minnesota about a possible NIL deal. At some point, the agent casually proclaims that it’s really too bad the player doesn’t play for USC because the NIL money and opportunities would be five or ten times greater. The hook is set.

After Spring practice ended, Riley told people that the Fall roster would be very different than the Spring roster. I believe he then signed 16 transfers from the portal. If anyone thinks he did that without tampering and breaking the rules, my friend has a bridge he would love to sell you.

I don’t know if he will exceed 16 this year, but don’t be surprised to see some first team Big 10 or Big 12 OL enter the portal after the bowl games and quickly commit to USC.
