Why don't they open the transfer portal until after the Bowl games?

These bowl games are becoming the JV rewards game. NFL prospects all sit out, players leave for perceived greener pastures and the team is a shell of what was the regular season roster. What was once a reward for a good to great season and a spring board into the off season and pre-season rankings is now even more meaningless than before. I remember the good old days of Marino to Brown in the Sugar that set up expectations for the 1982 season... And they want us to spend hard earned money during the Holidays to go watch back-ups play?

NC State Game & Other Dribbles ...

** Is it entirely possible that several games into Coach Capel’s fifth year, we might need to start selling some seats on the Jeff Capel Bandwagon?

** Too make my point … I’m going to quote myself after the Edinboro exhibition win. Here goes: “Why can’t I get more excited about this team? … I guess the answer to my question lies simply within Coach Capel. In his first four years, I’ve yet to see a Pitt Hoops group that has looked like he’s organized them well. I’ve yet to see a group that has looked like it’s even played to the sum of it’s parts, let alone greater than.”

** I’m also not going to screw up and try to quote myself from back in January 2021 proclaiming “We’re ba …” Afterall, we all know how that turned out.

** But I have no problem saying that the Panthers we have watched in the past two games have looked organized well. They have looked to play to the sum of their parts, and perhaps even beyond.

** What I watched tonight was in my opinion the Panthers' most impressive game of the year.

** We blew out Northwestern because we played well and shot really, really well. But sometimes shooting really, really well can make a team look a little, if not alot better than they really are.

** We won tonight because we played really well, not because we shot well. And we played physical and focused on both ends.

** Tonight, on the same number of deep shots, we hit 8 fewer three pointers against the Wolfpack than we did against the Wildcats, and yet we were able to go on the road and keep a quality opponent at arm’s length for the entire second half.

** And perhaps the biggest reason we kept NC State at arm’s length was because of the length of Federiko Federiko’s arms.

** It’s not often that something of a bit player like Fede can make such an important stamp on a game like he made today.

** In the NBA, you can find those who compile a statistic known as “screen assists.” Maybe someone else can compile that number for the Panthers today, but it’s easy to guess that Fede had at least three or four of them today.

** On the defensive end, Fede’s length stood tall in the post and contested jump shots further out. Most importantly, I can’t recall the last time I’ve seen a player be as incredibly disruptive to an offense with the way Fede executed his hedges this evening. It really can’t be done any better.

** The willing recipient of most of Fede’s screens was the not so young man who played by far his best overall game as a Panther. Jamarius Burton was nothing short of splendid tonight.

** Burton’s execution of the offense this evening was nearly flawless. There have been times over the past season and a half when his game has felt a little more individual than I would like. But even though he was the Panthers lead dog against the Cats, he never really forced a shot.

** Jamarius was an equal force on defense as well. He keeps this up and All League could end up next to his name.

** And while their production wasn’t at Burton’s level, Nelly, Greg and especially Nike played really well too. Our guards were much better than their guards and that’s saying something.

** All of this credit to execution needs goes to Coach Capel, but let’s also give credit to Capel's playing time decisions also. First, he recognized John just didn’t have it. Next, he recognized that Jorge was wrong for this game. Lastly, Jeff went against his usual grain and brought Blake back in the first half with two fouls. It’s a different game if he doesn’t do that.

** So if you do want to buy a seat on the Capel Bandwagon, you better get your ticket now because if there are a couple more games like this, seats could go fast.

** Nonetheless, once you do get on the wagon, I would also recommend wearing your seat belt. Unfortunately, in the past some of Capel’s bandwagons have come to abrupt halts. But for now, let’s look forward to the ride!

ACC bowl game predictions - post yours here

There's not a lot of inside info to go on at this point when it comes to bowl game projections, so I figured we could all post ours here and see what shakes out. I'm going with this for my guesses on the ACC's top 10 bowls (as of Sunday afternoon):

Orange Bowl - ACC champ - Clemson
Cheez-It Bowl - vs Big 12 - UNC
Duke’s Mayo Bowl - vs Big Ten - Duke
Fenway Bowl - vs. AAC - Syracuse
Pinstripe Bowl - vs. Big Ten - Pitt
ReliaQuest Bowl - vs. SEC - Wake Forest
Holiday Bowl - vs. Pac-12 - Louisville
Gator Bowl - vs. SEC - Florida State
Sun Bowl - vs. Pac-12 - Notre Dame
Military Bowl - vs. AAC - NC State

What are your guesses?

EDIT: I forgot the Military Bowl. I'm also going to flip Pitt to the Pinstripe, put NC State in the Military Bowl and send Syracuse to Boston.

A thought on Calijah Kancey

You've probably seen Calijah Kancey's announcement that he suffered a season-ending injury and had surgery on his shoulder, thus preventing him from playing in the Miami game and the bowl game.

What's particularly interesting about this is, Kancey's announcement seems to say that the injury and surgery are the reasons he will not be playing in the bowl game - which kind of implies that, if he had not gotten hurt, he would have played. And maybe I'm reading too much into it, but if he would have played in the bowl game...I don't know, maybe he's still considering coming back next season? I think it's unlikely and I've operated under the assumption that he would be leaving for the NFL, but it's still interesting that he seems to be suggesting that he would at least have been willing to play in the bowl game.

Maybe his plan was to finish his Pitt career in the bowl game. Who knows? Just seems interesting to me.

Pitt could be back in ACCG in 2023

A lot of roster comings and going to be sorted out, but looking at our schedule, the path is there. We have debated a lot about the dumb scheduling of CINCY/WVU/Notre Dame in the same year, but those are all non-con games. Our conference schedule is manageable:

Our road conference games are: Duke, Syracuse, Wake Forrest , and VT with Hartman gone from WF. Those are games we can win.

Our home conference games are: Boston College, Louisville, North Carolina, Florida St. Cunningham will be gone from LOU. If Maye leaves UNC, we have real shot to go 7-1 in conference. Not saying we will but the conference schedule is about as good as it can be with no Clemson, Miami, NC State. It's a shame Florida St decided to get good again now and couldn't have waited a couple years.

Edit - If we did go 7-1 in conference play it would probably include beating Florida State and losing to Boston College...that's the Pitt way!

Attendance

Did anyone hear the attendance figures for the men's soccer and women's volleyball games yesterday? We had soccer tickets. Arrived late and had to stand for the entire match. There were fans everywhere.
Also, the usher at the Pete indicated Pitt was expecting 2,200 fans for the volleyball game. Seems that number was low compared to the actual turnout.
