Lehigh @ Pitt this Sunday 11/17

It should be an amazing dual. Last year, Lehigh did not wrestle their full team, and Pitt won 21-12. I will give a full preview for this, but the gist is that there will be a lot of high-level close matches. Hopefully, the crowd will turn out well. Unfortunately, there probably won't be any students because it is over Thanksgiving Break. Regardless, it should be one of our better duals this season

Mack Brown vs Narduzzi

Brown: 44-32 - 57.89 winning %

Took over a team that went 2-9 and 3-9 in its previous two seasons.

Narduzzi: 72-54 - 57.14 winning %

Took over a team that went 7-6 and 6-7 in its previous two seasons.

So why is it so crazy to say that Narduzzi isn't doing a great job, when Mack Brown gets laughed at on this board? Do I think it should be easier to be successful at UNC? Probably. But look at each team's record since 2000. It hasn't played out that way at all, because UNC doesn't care about football. So it kind of evens out.

Pitt schedule looks a lot tougher

Louisville demolishing nationally ranked Indiana today and then the Mountaineers upsetting Gonzaga in overtime were amazing. Pitt has to play Louisville twice. In Addition to North Carolina twice. Add Clemson, Duke and Wake Forest and you have plenty of opportunities to build your resume.

Need to take advantage of games with Ohio State and Mississippi State.

This is the root of Pitt’s struggles

The root of all of the struggles started it when for whatever reason Pat Narduzzi decided that having an offense that functioned well under Mark Whipple wasn’t good enough. at least with Mark Whipple has a coordinator, he knew how to use the players he had and scheme guys open. It was a pro style run and shoot type of offense that runs the same type of formations that we have now, but it had some variations, but the difference was is that he knew how to recruit to his scheme and when he let him go it he did not hire the right coordinators that had a vision to have the right staff to recruit athletes that can make an impact on the offensive side of the football and the skill positions. So Pat Narduzzi needs to firing a perfectly fine offensive coordinator for no good reason whatsoever. Until we get a guy who can truly coach for his personnel this will keep happening.

OT: former Pitt assistants and grad assistants

Was watching MACtion and mentioned the wife that Joe Moorhead was a Pitt grad assistant which sent me down a rabbit hole of prominent NFL or college coaches who had a stint at Pitt and it was pretty eye opening... as a palate cleanse from the NarDiscourse, here's a partial list of guys that came thru here and its beyond impressive. For those of the older guys who were alive during the golden years, just bear with me on my personal amusement:

Jon Gruden
John Harbaugh (and Jack Harbaugh)
Mike McCarthy
Marvin Lewis
Jimmy Johnson
Chris Petesen
Curt "the good one" Cignetti
Mike Norvell
Dan Lanning
Joe Moorhead
Dino Babers
Bob McAdoo
John Fox
Bob Davie
Kirk Ferentz
Mike Sherman

I'm sure I missed several and knew about some of these. A lot of NFL guys and P4/P5 head coaches carried a clip board in the Burgh

The Morning Pitt: 11/27/2024 - What happens without Dunn?

Pitt won't have Damian Dunn until early January, so how will the Panthers replace his offense and his defense? On today's Morning Pitt, we're talking about the top candidates to fill in for Dunn - who will get his minutes and his spot in the starting lineup and which players will be counted on to produce on both ends of the court?

Lazinger's Lists - Wisky loss in the greenbriar final

I'm not going to go into too much detail here but some quick thoughts:
  • This team is shallow. We lost Dunn and had no one to guard Tonje.
  • I try not to blame officials but the truth is we win that game without the way it was called. It's not always about how many fouls are called but when they are. We only had 3 more called on us but they shot 9 more FTs including bail out calls on Tonje.
  • Unfortunate night for Lowe to have a bad shooting night from 3 but he makes 3 passes a game that are so ridiculous you can only laugh. Total joy to watch.
  • Can we tell GDG not to shoot a three unless its wide open? He shot 40% from three last year because he wasn't launching them when he was covered. He's taking FOUR AND A HALF threes per game.
  • I would have liked to seem some adjustment off of Tonje. He was 1-5 from three so maybe step off him and make him shoot it.
  • Delalic looked great and I expect him to get more run if he can defend. We weren't going to win every game but we have a shot to beat OSU so let's get this one back.

Wisconsin Game & Other Dribbles...

**I’ve been writing postgame “dribbles” for over 25 years, but this is a first.

**That is…I’ve never had to dictate postgame thoughts to a willing passenger (willing is a stretch) during our trek home.

**Thankfully, my William & Mary sophomore is up to the task, although they’ve pledged to insert a few of their own words along the way (Yep, in parentheses).

**I should say we’ve had a nice trip. In our drive to White Sulphur Springs we encountered wonderful weather and enjoyed splendid conversation in anticipation of our epic battle with the Badgers.

**Unfortunately the trip home is understandably disappointing. But that doesn’t mean we weren’t very proud of our Panthers.

**In short, on this day Tonje proved to be an unstoppable force within a battle of two pretty darn good teams.

**Throughout our first six wins, I’ve suggested the Panthers are still not quite the team I think they should be, but I think it should be thought of as good news that I still have that same thought tonight.

**The easiest explanation of course is that hopefully we’ll get more than two minutes out of Damian Dunn in future games. In fact it is reasonable to assert that regular minutes from Damian tonight may have been enough to make up the difference in the score (we needed his defense).

**Offensively, we still know that better days are ahead for Jaland. He’s still forcing it a bit more than he should instead of letting most things come to him. But this will get better.

**We also got to witness a mini coming-out party of Amsal Delalić (and Beebah I think to some degree), and tonight we finally got a better look at that player we hope he can be.

**But offense notwithstanding, what Capel and crew must examine is why we were nearly powerless to stop Wisconsin in the second half. There aren’t many games you’re going to win when your opponent scores 54 points in the latter 20.

**Foul trouble was part of the issue, but I have to wonder if a tinker to the zone a little earlier should have been in order.

**But all of that amounts to typical fan second-guessing. Tonight we were a good team who lost to a team who is just a little better at the moment (and has a future draft pick).

**Additionally, it’s not hard to see how this year’s team is strides ahead of last years at the same stretch. Hopefully we can still improve as they did, though.

**On a completely different note, I’m not sure I’ve ever attended a college basketball game with the announcer calling out the number of seconds remaining on a shot clock. That said, the experience watching the game at the Greenbrier was certainly one that was worth a special trip – despite their issues with technology and lighting.

**I was proud to be there and see a few old friends among the Pitt fans at the event, however, I must give the highest props to the Wisconsin faithful who showed out. They topped us 3 to 1 both in number and volume (not that we didn’t try to be loud, at least I did. I don’t know about my dad).

**I hope the Panthers will hold their heads high through the holiday on their way to Columbus. I can’t say I’d be predicting a win, but I’m confident we will at least enjoy another great contest like tonight.
