Point Park Exhibition Game & Other Dribbles ...

** For us “older timers,” the first walk up Cardiac Hill for a Hoops season is an exercise in counting as much as waking. So this is now 23 seasons walking up to the Pete, and a chunk more when the walks all the way up to the Fitz are added in.

** The feelings within the walk each season are so much different of course. In the walk up for the inaugural season of the Pete, it was to meet a Top 5 team. The next several filled with similar expectations.

** And of course, I’ve walked up to the Pete knowing we might face a season when we wouldn’t win a conference game.

** For this season, mentally it was a spirited walk, even if my physical pace of increasing age was a more than a touch slower. In other words, I’m more than pumped for this season to start even if my legs didn’t show it.

** For those of you who followed the game, you already know that the first half of this contest didn’t quite meet those already pumped expectations.

** Offensively, sure … we were fine I suppose. We scored plenty of points against a poor opponent without playing particularly pleasurable offense.

** But defensively? Our Panthers showed out early like they had already spent much of their day running up and down from Fifth Avenue to Courtside.

** I’m not too worried about defense though. There’s no reason this team can’t defend well in time. They have the talent, length and quickness. And the effort can certainly improve which was exemplified by much better ball pressure in the second half when we only surrendered 20 points to the Park.

** More importantly, we showed much better discipline on ball screens and switches in frame two, a trait solely lacking in the first frame. I’m sure Jeff said a thing or two about the issue at halftime.

** The other reason I wasn’t too worried is because it’s pretty clear this team can score.

** More importantly, it appears this team can score without shooting the three well, and this led to 93 points today.

** They can also score because they just might have the best starting backcourt in the ACC. I don’t see this as hyperbole.

** Jaland and Ish combined for 46 points and it really didn’t look like either was near their best to get to that number. But still, Jaland’s floater is gorgeous and Ish’s three ball looked great while he also mustered several tough points in the paint.

** Despite our fine pair, maybe the biggest offensive revelation was the splendid second half from Cam Corhen.

** This was certainly a welcome change from Cam’s first half, which had many, including myself, wondering just how this guy will fit in.

** What made Cam’s second half points so pleasing is that he scored all 6 of his buckets without any help. I’m not sure Fede scored 6 buckets all of last year without help.

** But the bigger number for Cam was the 11 rebounds. There’s still a way to go to learn whether he can be the rebounder the Panthers need, especially on the defensive end. But this was a welcome start.

** As for the rest of our Panthers on the offensive end, it was honestly a bit of a mixed bag. There wasn’t anyone who struggled, but also no one stood out.

** We can clearly see why Coach Capel likes the Twins on the perimeter with Cam down low because of the spacing they create and the open threes this generates for both. The problem today, of course, was that they combined to only knock down 2 of those 11 open threes. I expect that number to be double that in future games, but it’s something to keep an eye on until it happens.

** In the early going, Damian Dunn made a strong impression hitting two buckets, but he slowed down after that. But it's good to see how he plays defense and it's reasonable to believe he’ll have a handful of double digit scoring games in him, hopefully when Ish and Jaland aren’t clicking like tonight.

** Much of the same can be said about Beebah. Often, I thought to myself that he looked the part of a freshman finding his way, but then I realized he still tossed in 8 points.

** Nonetheless, for both of our backcourt understudies, it’s just going to take a little time for them to figure out exactly how they fit behind the prime pair.

** Perhaps Zach already knows how he fits, and that is to bring defense and energy. He did both tonight, including a highlight reel off the backboard fast break slam from Jaland. We’ll see what happens to his minutes though when Amsal joins the mix.

** We didn’t get a long look at Papa today, but mostly he played the minutes Cam didn’t. Only time will tell how he’ll stack up when the games start to matter. For tonight, we can only figure that he’s still finding his way.

** And Amdy and Marlon’s bigger minutes, barring injury, are in future years.

** As for the overall lineups, no one could possibly do a better job than how @Chris Peak broke it down in his game post, so I won’t try. And regardless, my hope is that Amsal throws a really positive wrench into the mix anyway.

** Overall, I wanted to offer one more observation about this year’s exhibition affair compared to the last two. In both of those contests, both were much more up and down the court affairs when the guys looked to be having an absolute blast.

** This time out, it appeared like our guys had a little more of business-like approach.

** Of course, this is just a gut feel, nor can I say one should look at this as a good thing or a bad thing, especially knowing that our teams didn’t get off to great starts in the last two campaigns. Perhaps we’ll get more of an answer in the next few weeks.

** For this Pitt fan, I’ll end by saying I’m glad season 23 at the Pete is underway, even if it’s getting harder to walk there.

** And after tonight, I’ll take my thoughts off of games at the Pete for a bit, and instead to the game at Acrisure in hopes that Eli and crew will get to 7-0!

Initial Bracketology

At least we are in the field. That is a big step up from last 2 seasons. Wonder if Lunardi coming to see the ACC coaches meeting affected his 6 ACC team projection.....

College Football Playoff 2024: Week 9 bubble watch

Next four out

Pitt Panthers (6-0)

Best win:
Sept. 7 at Cincinnati, 28-27
Toughest remaining game: Nov. 16 vs. Clemson

On Thursday against Syracuse, Pitt will play an opponent with a winning record for the first time since its Sept. 7 trip to Cincinnati. That's followed by a trip to SMU. The Panthers are entering the stretch of the season that will reveal if they can continue their success against better competition.

The Morning Pitt: 10/23/2024 - Properly reacting to Pitt's exhibition win

On today's Morning Pitt, we're definitely not overreacting to Pitt's exhibition game against Point Park. Seriously: we're not. In fact, we're properly reacting to a win that looked a lot like what we expect this Pitt basketball team to look like.

Conner killed it last night

Just over 150 all purpose yards, big catch to set up the game winning field goal, 7.2 yards per touch, and a stat you'll rarely see: an offensive player with a forced fumble. Kyler Murray threw a pick to a Chargers DT, Conner chased the guy down, knocked the ball out, Arizona recovered

He's also 100% one of the leaders on that roster, maybe THE leader. Been a really good NFL player ever since, well, you know

Pitt is coming off its second bye week and gets ready for a challenging stretch run of six consecutive games, including showdowns with No. 9 Clemson and No. 22 SMU. But first up is a Thursday night battle with Syracuse (5-1). Syracuse and Pitt were picked to finish 12th and 13th, respectively, in the ACC's preseason media poll and have far exceeded expectations. Quarterback Eli Holstein had a rough outing against California (133 passing yards, two INTs), but Pitt coach Pat Narduzzi is confident his redshirt freshman playmaker will bounce back nicely. "There's no lost trust in Eli," Narduzzi told reporters. "I think he's spectacular

Reminder No Narduzzi today

With a Thursday game, the schedule is a little different this week. Narduzzi's standard Monday press conference occurred on Friday

Here is the transcript, video, and takeaways.

He will speak again tomorrow at 1:00 p.m., that is the sit-down interview that usually happens on Thursdays on game weeks.

A few players and an assistant coach will also speak to the media today.

Plus the normal Monday business should go down as usual. Pitt will release the game notes probably this afternoon right around noon, and that has the depth chart.

And the ACC will also announce kickoff times for the November 2nd weekend, so we should see a start time for the SMU game.

OT: play action (Russ)

Good breakdown here of Russ and Arthur smith running play action. I’ve been hitting this issue hard since Canada refused to run it when that was Kenny’s strong suit. Some guys just do it better and it’s what Russ is particularly good at and Fields not so much. It’s why I kept telling you guys to pump the brakes when y’all assumed Russ was going to get murdered and be ineffective behind this OL. In any event, really good stuff here.

OT: Pens

It’s really telling that we’re 2+ weeks into the season and there’s no thread yet. I haven’t seen this little enthusiasm since pre-MAF/Geno/Sid.

On one hand, we’ve had it so good — five cups in my lifetime. On the other hand, it’s tough to watch the front office waste the twilight of their careers.

Pitt Thursday Night Football

Later this week marks Pitt’s 27th appearance on ESPN Thursday Night Football in history, which includes two Thanksgiving Day games against West Virginia. The Panthers are 11-15 all-time in such matchups.

Pitt has won five consecutive Thursday night games. Pitt is 5-3 under Pat Narduzzi in Thursday night games.

Pitt is 7-6 in Thursday night home games at Acrsiure Stadium/Heinz Field, including four in a row.

The Panthers have only played Syracuse once on Thursday night, a 24-17 win for the Orange at old Pitt Stadium.

Pitt has had other Thursday games, most notably the 2010 season opener against Utah, the 1982 season opener against UNC, and a few PSU games were held on Thanksgiving Day, plus the Georgia Tech makeup game in 2020 was a Thursday night. I was more looking at Pitt's history in these night games.

Pitt Hoops "Open Practice" & Other Dribbles ...

** I suppose an “open practice” is not an event that inspires much enthusiasm among the hoops faithful. Accordingly, perhaps only 100 or so Panther fans were in attendance this day.

** But for us diehards, it was still a pleasure to get a peek at the players and a bit of an overall glance at the team.

** Neither the peek nor the glance offered any significant insights, but like the rest of those in the seats, I did get a few
"impressions."

** The largest impression for me is that it might be possible that this team will shoot even more threes than either of the last two years.

** From the drills and the scrimmages, it was clear how the three is built into the offense. Additionally, it might even appear that every single Panther, from Jaland and Ish, to Cam and Papa, will have a green light to let the open three fly.

** In fact, the only player who didn’t let the three fly today was Amsal as he was mostly sidelined with his hand injury. I was a bit encouraged though that he sported a relatively small looking cast, and he even used his casted hand in an early warm up dribbling drill, albeit very sparingly. Other than that, he only did some conditioning work behind the basket. Nonetheless, knowing he used the hand even a little makes me feel like he can’t be too far away.

** Otherwise, the practice did little to quell the "raging" debate as to whether this is Jaland’s team or Ish’s team. To end the practice Coach Capel called on Ish first then Jaland next to sink free throws to end the affair.

** But to my eye, it really looked today as if Jaland was all over the court, nearly always in an impressive way. He shot the three well, and drove fearlessly into the paint which included a finish that made me say “Wow!” And we has really getting after it on defense too.

** @JimHammett started a nice thread during the event, and I’ll reshare something I added there earlier today. (Jaland) has that “ready to be special” look about him.

** It’s wiser not to get too far ahead of ourselves with Jaland, but it’s also hard not to think he’s ready to make strides beyond his fine freshman year.

** This isn’t to say that Ish won’t be there with him. He looked solid today. But he wasn’t the most noticeable player on the court like Jaland.

** The backcourt minutes were rounded out by Dunn and Cummings. From the lineups used in the scrimmage, it’s an early bet that Damien will be backup at the point, along with spending a few minutes at the two and three as well.

** Damien looks like a strong, seasoned vet with his presence on the court. He also appears nicely physical and has a decent shot. The only reason he won’t play something like 20 minutes per game is because Jaland and Ish could be too good to open up that many.

** As for Brandon Cummings, there’s a lot to like. He has some clear skills that this team will be able to use this year. In fact, early on in the practice, I may have been more impressed with him than anyone. But as the minutes passed, he came to earth a bit, and offered a couple of pesky turnovers.

** At this point, he also seems to play more with a one on one style as opposed to a greater orchestrator role that was more evident in Jaland and Damian.

** Still, it does seem possible that he could be our best three point shooter, making me wonder if a spot up corner role like Greg Elliott two years ago might be a good way to use him.

** I wonder if Capel has some new plans for Zach Austin, as he worked with the guards in one of the early drills, and actually played alongside Jaland at the two in the first half of the scrimmage. Zach showed his usual athleticism, but not necessarily greater production during the day, except showing a nifty post up baby hook. Does Jeff want to use him to post up smaller guards this year?

** If Jaland was one stand out, then I could say Cam Corhen was the other. He has offensive talent that we just didn’t possess in the post last year. This includes a night face up jumper from the foul line, and perhaps even range out to the three.

** A welcome sight was watching Cam often clear the defensive glass too.

** My only concern with Cam is a slight fear that he might look to force his offense a little too much.

** During the scrimmages, most often when Cam was on one side at the five, Papa was on the other. It should be noted that Papa drained a top of the key three, but he did also have some struggles finishing down low, getting blocked by both Jorge and Zach.

** Still, at the moment, it looks like Jeff’s plans for Guillermo this campaign are much more as a four than a five. In fact, the only time G looked like he was playing the five was during a stint when he was playing alongside his twin brother.

** We can only see how the rotation could be impacted when Amsal joins the fray.

** Speaking of twin brothers, it might be true to say that Jorge was the better of the two today. Most times when I saw a three fall during the scrimmage, it was from Twin 31 instead of Twin 25 And since Twin 25 has proven to be a 40% three point shooter, that could make things interesting.

** Marlon Barnes and Amdy Ndiaye didn’t leave me with many impressions,. other that Amdy looked much more like a perimeter big than a post up.

** Finally, I did want to note the presence of 6-10, 250 freshman local product Liam Mignogna among the walk ons. His role this year is clear and not unimportant – which is to beat on the other bigs down low in practice. Or in other words, do his best Ian Schieffelin impression. He looks a little like Ian actually.

** As for lineups, beyond some of the items already covered, in the second half of the scrimmage Capel called for a team with Jaland, Ish, Zach, GDiaz and Cam. At the moment, I’d guess this is the starting five.

** In my lifetime, I’ve had the pleasure of watching practices, both open and closed, at least once during the tenures of six Panther Hoops Head Coaches. I won’t attempt to proclaim that this practice under Capel was remarkably greater. But Capel’s culture is clearly evident.

** To that end, one thing I noticed was anytime a player hit the floor, as many as a half dozen or more teammates would swarm to help him up.

** Beyond that, our guys looked focused, spirited and determined. More importantly, they are talented. And everything I watched today continued my personal enthusiasm thinking this team has the chance to be really good.
