50th Anniversary of the Immaculate Reception…

Did they Steelers every have a halfway decent special teams? It's like they always sucked in that department. Say the Steelers beat Miami, goto SBVII and play Washington, does anyone even score a TD in that game? Both teams had horrid offenses and great defenses, it would be 3-0 or maybe one of the D's score and it's 7-0.
I'd say in the 90's around the time the Steelers lost to the Cowboys in the Super Bowl, the special teams were pretty good. Bobby April did a decent job with that group.

What is funny, is at least the first two Super Bowls, Roy Gerela and Bobby Walden (K and P) sucked. They were mediocre at best. Bahr and Colquitt were much better in the second two Super Bowls.

I'm saying plays that happened before replay was instituted.
I don’t see how replay would change the immaculate reception. Letter of the law is it has to be conclusive to overturn and the video doesn’t confirm that the ball didn’t touch Fuqua. As far as the ball touching the ground, that’s not in doubt. The rare end zone angle that never gets shown clearly shows the ball never touching the ground.

But one play that would have been overturned was Renfro’s TD for Houston against the Steelers in 1980 in the championship game. That was clearly a catch and TD. The Steelers went on to win 27-13 but that play changed the game.

It was definitely a wrong and very bad call. But one thing they usually don’t mention is that it happened late in the third quarter. Not at the very end of the game like there IR or The Catch. So there was opportunity for Houston to recover from it. They got a FG on the next play and cut the lead to 4. It wasn’t like the Steelers had a big lead at that point.

On a related note....this game....against the Raiders is going to be played on Christmas Eve (this Saturday) at Heinz/Whatever.

It is going to be like 9 degrees, with like 25 mile per hour winds. LOL...how many season ticket holders you think will be there? This is called the dump offs to the kids, neighbors and anyone who ever asked for tickets.

I am guessing 12,000 no shows.

I'm at the point, I want to go to a Steelers game or Pitt game in September, so I can show up 2 hours early in shorts and a T Shirt and drink a 12 pack before kickoff and get a tan, on a windy, freezing Christmas Eve, I'd rather be at home with the heat turned up watching on TV.

you see, i hate "hot" noon september games as much or more than freezing cold games. im a Oct/Nov guy, give me 50 degrees, overcast, and im in heaven.. i literally hate being cooked in the sun on these labor day games..

I am going to channel my inner Ski here. That's a piece of crap movie. Never saw the big deal about it. A Christmas Carol is so much better.

I admit, I don't like noon games, but I'd take a warm weather game over freezing December, and I do like October/November 50 degree days very much as well.

I'm not sure if I ever really sat and watched "It's a Wonderful Life" it may be a tradition to some, but not me. How did it become a tradition and since when? Of course, I'm a child of Greek immigrants, so there's multitudes of things people say are traditional that I never heard of? And nobody I know eats ham on Easter, doesn't everyone put a whole lamb on a spit?

To each his own. Always a favorite of mine. I am a big fan of older movies. Another favorite is A Christmas Carol from 1951. This British version starring Alistair Sim is a classic and widely considered the best version made. It's another part of my collection and I never miss it this time of year.

I think the Steelers lost to Miami the week after the Immaculate Reception, didn't they? I believe it's common misconception that they won the Super Bowl that year. I guess you could argue that it helped pave the way for future Super Bowl runs... ?
It was historic as their first ever play-off win.

Yeah, I remember it was a Saturday afternoon and I was at the YMCA playing in a basketball league during the game because it wasn't on TV, then hearing about it later that day.
We drove out to the Youngstown area and watched the game at an eagles club or something , one of my uncles work buddies had a brother out there. Niles maybe

that should have never been allowed, hit an offensive player before Franco caught it, back then that was illegal

If I show you an angle with the ball hiting Tatum….then show you the ball not hitting the ground….will you ignore it or say “oh man, my bad. Sorry about that”

(Serious question)

I was 14 at that time. My brother was 18. He and my dad drove to Ohio to watch the game at a bar. I listened to it on the radio. The Steelers in the playoffs was still hard to believe then.

Bad call maybe. But the Stiller’s were destined to kick their asses anyway.

at least watching all the film that is on youtube, there's no way the TD call would have been reversed. Opposite is also true that if they ruled not a TD not sure they would have over turned that. Crazy play, there has been thousands of insane endings but this one stands the test of time and is still revered 50 years later.

The Steelers will wear their block number throwbacks Saturday night. I, for one, think they need to make this look permanent!

However, we're talking the 1972 season. (Pitt 1-10, Carl DePasqua.)
Everything would change in 1973. Johnny Majors starts and awards the most scholarships in Pitt history, anywhere from 65-100. Jackie Sherrill says it was 76.

I don't know if it's true or not, but some people have said that Pitt's 1973 recruiting class is the reason the NCAA set football scholarship limits.

I like Franko and really like Jack Ham. Does that make me a Nitter?
Of course! You're supposed to hate all Nitters, even if they're your neighbors, co-workers or relatives! If a Nitter plays for your favorite NFL team, you root against your team so the Nitter loses, Many here seem to feel that way :)

I'd rather not, I don't want to go back to the 70s. It cracks me up and I hate that this is now the "throwback" uniform, BECAUSE IT'S NOT ANY DIFFERENT, it looks exactly the same, the number font is the only difference, I'd rather have the black jersey, yellow numbers and yellow helmets back that they had about 10-15 years ago.

Agree to disagree re: the block numbers (I think the current look with the logo on the chest is a little dated), but I’m with you on the 75th anniversary uniforms. That was a great throwback uniform.
