CBS SPORTS POWER RANKINGS:
SEC 1. BAMA
B10 2. OHIO STATE
ACC 3. CLEMSON Wow, only four quarterbacks nationally -- two among Power Five -- have thrown more interceptions than Deshaun Watson (14). Don't know what that means in the big picture, but for the offense best positioned to challenge Bama's D, it's something to consider.
P12 4. WASHINGTON
P12 5. USC The Trojans make me wish there were an eight-team playoff. They've won eight in a row and finished 6-0 at home after a dismantling of Notre Dame. Only Alabama is hotter. Adoree Jackson for Heisman!
B10 6. MICHIGAN
B10 7. WISCONSIN All credit to Barry Alvarez, Bret Bielema and now Paul Chryst. The Badgers have been one of the most consistent teams in the country recently. If they beat Penn State, Wisconsin will win its third Big Ten title in six years.
P12 8 COLORADO
B12 9. OKLAHOMA
B10 10. Penn State James Franklin has made his own case for coach of the year. Penn State (10-2) has improved itself by 3 ½ games over last season to win the Big Ten East. This is already guaranteed to be the best Penn State season since 2009. If the Nittany Lions beat Wisconsin, let the controversy begin.
MAC 11. WESTERN MICHIGAN
B12 12. OKLAHOMA STATE If Mike Gundy beats Oklahoma, he will have won at least 10 games five of the last seven years. Who does that? Who stays around long enough to do that?
B12 13. WEST VIRGINIA Dana Hologorsen's name has surfaced at Oregon and Houston. Oregon isn't open yet. Houston would technically be a step down. But for now he might be the Big 12 coach of the year.
P12 14. STANFORD
AAC 15. SOUTH FLORIDA
ACC 16. FLORIDA STATE
SEC 17. FLORIDA
AAC 18. NAVY
AAC 19. HOUSTON
ACC 20 VIRGINIA TECH
SEC 21. LSU
ACC 22. LOUISVILLE
ACC 23. PITT You better win a game that featured 20 total touchdowns and was the highest-scoring regulation game in FBS in history. The Panthers did. It must have broke Pat Narduzzi's heart to give up that many points. But an eight-win season that included wins over a couple of possible playoff teams (Clemson, Penn State) doesn't suck.
AAC 24. TEMPLE The season began with a home loss to Army. The Owls were 3-3 after six games. They won the final six to gain a berth in the AAC title game. How long can Temple keep Matt Ruhle?
SBC 25. TROY
