Basketball is a better investment. Football talent has regionally left PA, and even if it were here, PSU is marketed much better and has a much better draw to players.

And during those years our Football team, outside of 1-2 years, was chugging along in the normal 6-6, 7-5 range. The 90s killed Pitt athletics, and unlike other schools that realized it quickly, booster money is the only way to bring it back.

Sad part is, an NCAA death penalty is much easier to manage than a self-imposed "Academic" Death Penalty, because the alumni usually are emboldened by feeling slighted.

People call it NIL but there are very few real NIL deals being made. It’s straight pay kids to show up. Kenny Pickett had an NIL deal with a car dealership. Allar has a car dealer deal in central PA. All I hear about are kids getting deals calling for money well above what NFL rookies are getting paid on their first contracts. If a kid is a bust does he still get the money? Are kids even going to class??

College sports was dead the day NIL came into being. Ohio State paid out an estimated $20 million to its roster, just to give an idea of what it takes to field a championship caliber team in football.

For some smaller schools with plenty of wealthy alumni, such SMU, Duke, UVA, Miami, this is a godsend. And if Stanford really wanted to become serious, they would blow everyone out of the water. Albeit Stanford prefers to maintain its academic standards at some level.

Pitt needs to just remain relevant enough until the system becomes more equitable. The current structure that permits practically unlimited NIL and easy transfers is unsustainable. If there is not any reform in how college players are compensated and permitted to transfer, then Pitt’s in big trouble.
