The point about wrestling clubs is a good one. Kids want to go where they will have great training partners. That is why you see so many schools at the NCAAs who have good wrestlers in 3 or 4 weight classes in a row. A perfect example was Cornell. They had 3 semi-finalists -- at 165, 174 and 184. Besides having Dean, the defending champion at 184, they have Kyle Dake, a four-time NCAA champion in 4 different weight classes (149 to 174) as an assistant. So guys in those weights go there so they can workout with Dake and Dean. Last year, Edinboro had the same thing with their three top wrestlers being in consecutive low weight classes.
With returning NCAA champs at 149, 157, 165, 174 and 184, plus David Taylor, a former champion at 174, do you think Sanderson has any trouble getting top wrestlers in those weight classes to commit to PSU? His only problem now is that Nolf, Joseph, Hall and Nickels all are frosh or sophs. So he likely won't be recruiting in those weight classes for two years.
What does Pitt offer? In the lower weight classes, a chance to workout with Headlee, Bentley, Forys and Nick Zanetta. Not much of a draw. In the middle weight classes, a chance to workout with Kocher and two NCAA qualifiers. Kocher was an All-American, but he is no Dake or Taylor.
That's why it is going to take not only hiring the right head coach, but giving him the money to hire top assistants who will be draws to recruits and giving him a commitment to upgrade the facilities.
As for the wrestling club, as was pointed out, the funding for that has to come from alumni and boosters. My sense is that if the program made a commitment, that money would be forthcoming. I have heard Taylor gets $2,000 a month, but that is only for 9 months. Even if it is for a year, that's not a huge amount to match. But with Taylor it's not just going to be the money. He still wants an Olympic Gold and a world title. There have to be guys around he thinks can help him get it. At PSU, he has Sanderson and all of the great current wrestlers from 157 to 184. We can't match that.
