He is unhappy and wants out of Houston. How much would you be willing to give up to land him?

Quite a bit. But I read something earlier that his unhappiness stems from not being consulted with the hiring of a new GM.

I know some athletes wield more power now. But I don’t know that someone who thinks like that would be in play with the Stillers.

After the trainwreck of bill O’Brien emptying the cupboard -
I’d want consulted too/
To ensure they were remotely competent

Unless Ben retires after this year, it seems as if we’d be out here. No way Watson goes somewhere where he sits down for a year in his prime. And I don’t think the Steelers can afford him and Ben on the roster (cap hits). Same with wentz, etc. Those guys will want to play.

I strongly agree with that sentiment. Players play. Coaches coach. Managers manage. Owners own. It’s that way for a reason. The owners made a mistake ingiving O’Brien the power he had. They fixed that problem and now rebuild. Mr. Watson can complain about not having a say, but he isn’t entitled to one other than on the field, in the locker room or in the film room. He is after all making good money to have a say only in those situations.

The problem is if the owner told Watson he could provide feedback and then that didn't happen I could understand why he would be upset.

The owners told him he would be involved, and then didn’t involve him. They’re obviously a terribly run organization, and if I was Watson at 25 y/o, I’d want out too.

I’m inclined to agree with this, but you never know. Fitzpatrick had issues with the Miami staff over where he wanted to play in their scheme and we traded for them.

That’s a bit different.

But a since it’s now come out he was told he’d be involved and wasn’t I can understand him being pissed off.
Agreed, especially since Texans appear to be the only team that didn’t interview the Chiefs offensive coordinator, Watson’s preferred choice. It’s like they’re trying to run him out of town; first they trade away his superstar WR and now this.

I guess they could run him out if they get a boatload in trade return and burn it down and start over. But man franchise QBs aren’t easy to come by (thanks mr obvious). That would be quite bold.

I know they don’t have their own 1 and 2 this year because of the trade with the Dolphins.

My money says he goes nowhere but we shall see.

I have to laugh at the notion that anyone would think the Steelers can get Watson for the 28th pick.

No doubt. Some of the theoretical offers on here for the overall number 1 this year to draft Lawrence were stunning too. And by stunning I mean there’s a better chance of me getting a date with Scarlett Johansson.

They got Minkah for a 1st round pick when it seemed likely the pick would be in the middle. And it was worth it. Imagine the price tag of a franchise qb.

Watson's contract is pretty cap friendly next year, under $16m. If they cut Ben and traded for Watson they would actually save $3m next year.

Obviously a huge longshot, but I would kick the tires. It would take at least something like TJ Watt plus a 1st and more, or multiple firsts and other picks.

You really think Roethlisberger would start anywhere, anyplace over Deshaun Watson? That makes no sense, he’s way above Roethlisberger at this point in their careers, Watson would certainly not be the one sitting.

Watson was the too passer in the league this year. Houston would be nuts to trade him.

Then again, they traded away DeAndre Hopkins for a bag of rice.

If you can get Watson - Ben can do one of two things...retire or be cut. To think you would play a 39 year old Ben over Watson is nonsensical.

You would think this would be obvious, but apparently not. They are nowhere near the same level of QB at this point in their careers.

Sorry, I did not elaborate my post with the size of his cap hit. He is going to take a large chunk of the total cap and with all the players we need to replace or resign I would take Rudolf and build around him. Of course Watson is better.

Seriously? That’s laughable...Watson is the third best QB in the league at worst. Probably number 2.

they told him he'd be consulted and lied about it. every management decision since he's been there has been an unabashed disaster. he's been nothing but a model citizen on and off the field. he makes way more than the coaches and GM. they SHOULD consult him since he needs a system he feels good about.

this isn't 1965 anymore. sports are player driven. coaches and GM's usually have a short shelf life. you want your franchise player happy.

Just take some of Ben's and Al's money off the books, restructure some of the bloated contracts or even cut some people(DeCastro, Pouncey, Tuitt) and there you go. I wouldn't invest any time nor money on Mason Rudolph...he's a stiff! He had one good half against the Browns with a depleted secondary and now everyone is all giddy over him.

I hear ya!

I know you’re probably just spit-balling but cutting decastro or tuitt would be dumb. Both are Pro Bowl level players. DeCastro has one more year left on his deal which is why his hit is large. I’d expect them to extend him and bring his cap hit down. If you need to clear space that bad to dump Tuitt you can absolutely recoup value for a 27 yo guy with his versatility and skill coming off 11 sack year. He could play in any D in the league and make it better.

If you need to clear space I’d start with the TE group.

You give Houston whoever they want, and put Ben out to pasture.

At least two first rounders, a few more second and third rounders, and Watt should be a start. But you do what you need to do to get a proven franchise quarterback, especially when your old franchise QB is cooked.

First and second this year, first and third next year.

If he is being shopped, I don't know if another team can/would offer multiple top 120 picks like that.

Perhaps your missed where I said above I wasn’t aware that they’d made that promise to him. And then said in light of that I can I understand why he was pissed.
