Dixon to UCLA?

kinda a bad title for this thread.

and it would be a bad move. UCLA just isn't what it used to be. Dixon will get them into the tournament, but doubt he could give them what they want.

Their unreasonable expectations and lack of pay have ruined that job.

Didn't Howland win the league the year he was canned?

I thought I read somewhere that they were waiting for Luke Walton to get canned from the Lakers?

Who out there wouldn’t make a lateral move with a guaranteed contract for more money ? Pitt could’ve just said to JD to just make sure they put University of Pgh on the full buyout check !

You can accomplish more at UCLA than TCU and with JD money LA is a nice place to be .

Maybe he wants to go back to his roots ....acting !

Do you realize what will happen if UCLA hires Jamie Dixon? He hasn't had a winning record in conference in 5 years.

Has UCLA talked to Sean or Archie Miller yet?

Asking for a friend...

I will say this: UCLA boosters (and I know two very important ones very well) are apoplectic about the state of the basketball coach hiring. They have seen their program fall from having perhaps the most sought-after job in college basketball to one where of the top ten candidates, only one even granted them an interview.

Because it is a state school, UCLA cannot pay the huge base salary that some other schools can. It will be up to boosters to supplement that salary significantly. In smaller markets, one of the ways that is done is by having the coach as the spokesperson for a booster’s business on television and radio. In the Los Angeles market, that is basically a non-starter. So, the boosters need to be excited over the hire to pony up the big bucks.

One of the boosters I know is contributing more than $1 Million annually to supplement Chip Kelly’s salary. He would gladly contribute an equal amount toward a basketball coach if the hire enthused him. He already has told the school not to even bother to call him if it is Dixon, Cronin or any of the other names now being considered.

Dixon potentially wanting the UCLA job makes sense. UCLA wanting Dixon does not. It takes two to tango.

Amazing how a snowstorm in Minnesota back in 1948 was the reason for UCLA winning 10 titles in 12 years. That storm hits 20 minutes later the phone call from the Minnesota administration to John Wooden at 6 p.m. gets through and he happily accepts the Gophers job, the one he really wanted.

Dixon 10 years ago would have been a slam dunk for UCLA. He's not washed up for sure but hiring him now would be a total disappointment if I'm a UCLA fan.

Dixon is a real good coach and would have UCLA near the top of a really bad league. He would do well at UCLA because he can coach but from a UCLA's fan/booster standpoint, they would have to loathe the move. Remember, true or not, the perception was that Pitt ran off Dixon. Cant imagine that sitting well with UCLA. Then he goes to TCU about the same time as Chris Beard goes to Texas Tech and gets 2 NIT titles and a 1st Round exit while Beard gets a Final Four.

After a three year hiatus, it looks like his agent is back to floating his name for other jobs to get him a raise. Look for an extension from TCU soon.
I didn’t bother to read the linked article but what you posted about an extension from TCU soon was exactly what I thought when seeing the thread title. We’ve seen this rodeo before,

Awesome. Two threads in one day for a coach who doesn’t work for Pitt anymore. Brilliant. Relevant.
(Wipes sarcasm from mouth)

And supposedly Mick Cronin is in the running, too. How do you think Alum would like that hire, considering how much they think of their school? People think UCLA would be unhappy with Dixon, consider this.

They fired Howland because he couldn't win the national championship, despite 3 Final Fours. They fired Lavin because 4 Sweet 16s and 1 Elite 8 was not good enough.

Cronin has had 13 years of head coaching experience at Cincy (15 overall) and never been passed the Sweet 16, and he's only did that once. For those of you who say Jamie couldn't win in March, Cronin's record is worse.

In his first 7 years at Cincy (Big East), he finished above 6th in the conference 1 time (4th place). It wasn't until they joined the American Conference that he was able to have any success in finishing near the top of the conference.

UCLA will be out with pitchforks if he is hired.

I dont think they will like Cronin either but at least he has been relevant recently. In their eyes, Jamie has done nothing the last 5 years.

Out of curiosity, who are some of the coaches that might interest him or other prominent boosters? I assume Calipari would be one. Maybe Chris Beard or Mark Few?

Well, he has made the tourney the last 6 years, but is 3-3 during that time frame. He plays the same style as Howland and Jamie. Don't think that will be received well at UCLA unless he has had some real success. I'm going to LA next week and I hope the new coach is hired by then. Would love to see the reaction of whomever it is.

That's not sarcasm you're wiping from your mouth.

As the most successful Pitt coach in most of our memories, Dixon will remain relevant to Pitt fans until this program becomes relevant again to the college basketball world.

It will be interesting to see if Earl Watson gets a chance to interview.

They offered Calipari $8 million and he turned them down. If I were them, I'd offer the same, maybe a little less to Bill Self, Tony Bennett, Mark Few or Chris Beard. Or they could probably get a Kelvin Sampson for $3 million to $4 million.

I dont understand why it was Calipari or some third tier coach like Dixon or Cronin.

Dixon's current style of play doesn't resemble what he was doing in his Pitt glory days. It hasn't in years. That change in philosophy and style is where he lost his way at Pitt, and why he didn't finish in the top 7 of what I think we can all now agree was a relatively weak league this year.

TCU is 146th in scoring D--44 spots lower than Pitt was this year. 77th in defensive efficiency--10 spots below Pitt this year. 106 in rebound margin. 113th in offensive efficiency.

Simply put, this Dixon ain't your Big East Dixon. It's a much diminished version with a completely different style of play.

I think it would end badly for Jamie if he left his Dream Job for another Dream Job.

UCLA will be hiring their 8th different Head Coach during Coach K's tenure at Duke. Sad, really.

I realize he changed his style, but they still aren’t “show time”, as the numbers prove.

That's interesting Mike because you definitely would have some insight into this that we wouldn't.

Who would UCLA really want??? And they (just like Pitt fans) have to realize it is not the 70's anymore.
