** Last night’s loss was tough on the eyes and the heart, so it’s probably better that I had some time to reflect before offering my thoughts.

** So while I’m not going to try make any claims that the Florida State game wasn’t as bad as it looked , the only (somewhat) healthy perspective I can add is that on Jan 16, 2024, our record was 10-7 and 1-5 in the ACC so all is certainly not lost.

** Except that I sure wish we could find that basketball team we watched in December. That one does seem lost at the moment.

** The night before the Louisville game, my kid and I were having some extended discussions, even offering some doubts about how good our team really is.

** What I offered as evidence of “pretty good” were the metrics, which all had us planted firmly in the “pretty good” category.

** Unfortunately, those metrics are slipping, and what we’ve actually watched over the past three games is a team that kind of looks a little like they’ve forgotten how to play basketball.

** After the Cuse game at the Pete last year, I remarked how I honestly had no idea whatsoever what we were trying to do offensively. It wasn't just bad shooting. I said then said that it was just really bad offense. Additionally, I added, most of our trips showed little beyond a weak ball screen, followed by a pass or two then a weak jump shot. We don't create shots at all. We don't move without the ball or share the ball very much.

** For five of our last six halves, much of this description could apply to our current group.

** Well … that is, maybe not even the ball screen. And other than kick outs to the three point line after iso drives, we just don’t pass the basketball.

** And I can’t recall the last time we started a basketball game with 6 turnovers in our first 13 trips. I’m sure it happened in one of those games of the Stallings era, but I see no reason to try to dig that up.

** On the other end of the court, for the second game in a row, our defense totally crumbled down the stretch. Against the Cards, it was 22 points surrendered in the last 10 possessions. Last night it was 25 points in the final 15 possessions. And the fact that most of this came from the free throw line makes no difference.

** Then there’s the rebounding. On the whole, we improved over the atrocious performance against Lousiville, but that’s faint praise.

** I try to offer Cam Corhen a little more shade than many here on the Lair. I don’t think he’s been at all good, but I also don’t think he’s always our biggest issue. But there’s no defense for the offensive offensive rebound he surrendered at the 1:30 mark with the Panthers down five.

** I just have no idea why he didn’t actually jump for the ball, let alone box out.

** Nonetheless, congratulations to Jorge Diaz Graham for being the one and only good thing to take from this game from a Panther perspective.

** So going forward, I recognize that the Panther contingent here on the Lair is ready with fire and pitchforks to demand changes. Last night, I might have been in that mob.

** My truth is, I don’t know what has to change. But something does.

** As for lineups, it makes plenty of obvious sense that JGD has earned a spot in the regular rotation, perhaps even as the first guy off the bench at either the three or four spots.

** And while I can’t say that GDG has been very effective either, he doesn’t look to me like he’s been any less effective than Cam. In my lineup, they’d split time at the five.

** We also need to get a better idea of what there is to get from Damian Dunn. We were all anxiously awaiting his return. But something seems amiss since he's come back. I can’t say what that is, but that’s on his coach to figure out.

** I could probably come up with a handful of other suggestions or minutes breakdown like most of you already have. But I’m not going to play armchair Head Coach. That is because we already have a guy who is paid lots of money to be the actual head coach.

** And the problem for our Panthers at this moment in time is that they really don’t look like a very well coached team.

** I’m at a loss to understand why we have resorted to nearly all iso ball looking to break down defenders off the dribble over an over to mixed at best results.

** I’m at an equal loss to understand what has happened to our defense down the stretch over the last two games.

** I’m at the biggest loss to understand just what the roles are for some of the players on this team. But that’s not for me to really understand. The bigger problem is that many of the players don't seem to understand their roles completely either.

** The truth about Capel’s tenure at Pitt is that it’s been filled with many more moments of bad than good, but the fact that nearly all of the good has come over the past two and a half years placed me firmly in his corner.

** For me, the greatest casualty of last night’s game is my confidence making me wonder once again if I’m standing in the right place.

** But for now, I’ll take a very, very much needed win on Saturday to put some of that trepidation at bay for the time being.

We were worried about you, DT. But someone said you had a 7AM meeting and that explains why the Dribbles are getting out now. No worries. I know too well how those 7AM meetings take their toll on time. But I'm retired now and my 7AM meeting is with a run or walk with my wife.

Two things you said that really got my attention:
1) These players don't move without the ball. I've seen them at times standing around like spectators just watching. It makes no sense.
2) Very little sharing of the ball. If it isn't Ish or Lowe dribble driving, or someone trying a 3, the passing and sharing of the ball is rare. The assists show that.

Of course, my biggest gripe has been the poor defense and rebounding. It doesn't matter how many points we score if we can't prevent the other team from scoring more. And why can't we seem to get some aggressiveness with our rebounding? Again, a lot of guys standing around waiting for someone else to do something. And good rebounding and defense leads to transition baskets on the other end. We rarely see that.

Thanks again for always providing Pitt fans with perspective. Hoping that we can get that elusive win against Clemson on Saturday.

Indeed, plenty of questions, and right now no answers. My only certainty is that we need more of Jorge, and less to none of Corhen. I would use both twins and Papa until they foul out. Corhen needs a good wakeup call. Let him sit and watch a game. We can't win with his efforts, let's try without him. Let's shoot more 3s off of penetration and stop trying to draw fouls or get blocked by bigger stronger players. That's all I got!

DT,

Physicalness has been lacking…it shows in the rebounding, and on defense. Lack of boxing out, denying the entry pass, and even getting open on inbounding the ball under our own basket (the steal and subsequent dunk was simply embarrassing).

Duke realized to stop our guards was to crowd the lane and surround them to avoid easy passes out. We need to use quick perimeter passes, and less dribbling. I like JaLand but his dribbling is getting himself in trouble as it seems our offensive flow stops and waits to see what JaLand will do. When we move the ball or as HC Jeff as said, “when we pass it around, the ball has energy”….its time to run some old school or junior high type of practice,..no dribbling, just passing, and moving without the ball…give it true energy!

The season remains ours for the taking!

Hail to PITT!
-Al-

There were so many turnovers early in that game, and so many bad ones, but the individual turnover that stood out above the others was when Corhen (after a defensive rebound) more or less passed the ball to FSU's Davis right under the basket for an open layup. Corhen last night, what can be said? It was the stuff of nightmares.

I think there is a tendency, early in the season, to quickly define how good or bad a team is and then overreact either in hype or disappointment if the results don't fall in line. Just my opinion, but I don't think the ceiling is quite as high as others here do about what this team is or what it can be, so I think some of the criticism the team gets now is a little harsh.

I get it for FSU. Last night's game was really sloppy. But I was surprised by some of the things I read in the Louisville game thread, and the comments after the game. I thought it was a highly entertaining game. Pitt fought their ass off for 40 minutes, just wasn't quite enough. Tip you cap to the Cardinals and move on.

Pretty good summary DT. I'll only add that based on how our offense was operating I fully expected Meadowlark Lemon and Curly Neal to appear on the court at some point. Unfortunately, we were not playing the Washington Generals.

Pitt first half - 27.27% FG. 12.5%. 3PT. - I believe we had 14 TOs - Probably out rebounded too?

Regardless of the final first half score, this game was lost by this "horrendous" start and a Head Coach who had zero clue on how to stop the bleeding.

I think there was an unnecessary and over reaction to the Duke loss and Very early Louisville start.

Capel massively changed the rotation for no good reason.

We got smaller. We become a three player team, almost exclusively dribble drive.

Yet we did stop the bleeding and were only down 5 at the half and cut it to one in the early part of the 2nd.

It was the 19-6 run over the next five minutes that did us in. It was mostly because FSU shot 9-11 over the stretch.

FSU played like shit on offense in the first half.

Playing merely competently, Pitt would have buried them in the first half.

In my mind (obviously not in yours) the game was lost with our start.

Jorge, Zack and Ish was a decent 3 point shooter for us last season. He hasn't been as good it seems so far this season. But no more GDG shooting 3's, he has been awful all season at it.

He should have sat Lowe after his third or fourth turnover. If nothing else, it would of given him some time to compose himself.

IMHO, the best basketball to watch is when the players share the ball, make the extra pass, move on offense, limit turnovers, play aggressive defense, and rebound the ball well. Pitt has done none of that in the past 3 games. And frankly, this type of play was limited in the beginning of the season, rarely seeing it. We see dribble drive on offense, no sharing or passing, and weak defense and rebounding. This is the prescription for losing more than winning against any team.
