How can we keep Matt Canada?

-No. My position is Pitt has been cheap and frugal for many years with poor leadership. And when you have a shit product and shit administration for decades, people are not quite so forgiving so easily, especially when a brand new AD makes a complete bonehead decision in the way the basketball coach was found and hired (Im talking about the process here, not Stallings)

-My point is to win over the crowd, show the crowd you want to win. Give the man his raise then ask for money. Dont ask for money first and then try to negotiate salary with Canada. My opinion would be clearly different if we actually paid Narduzzi a legit P5 salary. But sadly, we dont. And we can easily, EASILY, in our sleep, pay 200-400K for an assistant when we pay our head coach high end midmajor money.

How do you know Narduzzi's salary?

Maybe make him assistant HC/OC and pay him.

For all of the Pitt whiners who want a new $400 million 50,000 capacity stadium.

Save the money by staying at Heinz and put it to good use by increasing Matt Canada's salary and making a long term commitment to Narduzzi and his staff.

Forget the stadium, keep the coach and staff in place.

$400 million will go a long way in being able to keep the HC and staff for many years.

HAIL TO PITT!!!!
See, it's the opposite. We should encourage not only Canada, but narduzzi and everyone else to go. We can take the buyout money, get a cheap coach, and put that money towards a new stadium.

In fact, the cost of the stadium will go down, because then it would only need to accommodate 18,000 people.

It's brilliant, I tell you, brilliant.
Snicker, snicker, snicker......

I think many are overestimating one season

He will be on many teams watch list but I think he will need one more season before he leaves
In all seriousness, im thinking that also.
I remember Paul Rhoades was considered a must keep genius after the 2002 season.

To my understanding, Pitt does not disclose its coaches' salaries. They are not listed in the USATODAY database. You have to wait for Pitt's tax filings, which have not been posted for the years that Narduzzi is the coach.

So I don't know how anyone would know Narduzzi's salary.

That's pretty much my point. I have never seen his 2016 salary, and we won't know for sure until next year.

Let me get this straight. Your position is that we shouldn't donate because Pitt doesn't pay its coaches enough?

The sense of entitlement on the part of some is just amazing. One would think if someone cares enough to be active on a site like this and post about the program that they'd be willing to invest in it. But too many don't actually directly invest in it at all; at least in a tangible way. If they contribute nothing tangible then they should expect to get absolutely the same back in return, and nothing more.

Some want to sit back and freeload and let others bear the financial load. Then they'll bitch, moan and whine on here when they don't get the results they want. Those folks are really just part of the problem. Honestly, their opinions are of equal value to their investment in Pitt football: zero. :(

The donaters are those of us that are on the pay boards.

The people that are free-account only here are not likely to be donating to the Athletic Department at all.

-You do not know how much money I have or have not donated over the years. But my stance is firm, in that no one should have to donate 1 penny at this point to reach a mutual contract extension and raise with Matt Canada. If we paid our head football Coach $4 million per year and Top 25 money, ok. When we pay our football Coach Memphis, Central Florida and Uconn money, No. We are not talking about giving Narduzzi a raise. We are talking about giving an Elite assistant Top money. And after dumping over $1 million per year off the books from dumping Jamie Dixon for Stallings, we should be getting our moneys worth on the football end because of it. Dont be cheap and bleed the fanbase dry like Pitt football did for 30 years. Step up to the plate, Barnes.

Not all of us. I donate, travel, and have been a season ticket holder for around 15 years. But for the most part, I agree with you.

Again, you have no idea how much Narduzzi is getting paid. And in order to get to that $4M, those coaches typically work their way there by winning championships, etc. Or have a long history of winning. Not a new up and coming coach.

You obviously don't get it. I'm not surprised.

We need to get creative. I'd say money but that may not be enough. You guys remember in Godfather 2, the dead hooker scene with the Nevada Senator Geary? Im just saying, it worked for the Corleone family

I hear what u r saying, just let me know where and when, that all I'm saying.

-No, I get it just fine. Charlie Strong, Dan Mullin, Jim Mcelwain, Hugh Freeze, Butch Jones, Kevin Sumlin, you want me to keep going? None of these guys ever won a dam thing and all of them clear 4 million. James Franklin clears 4.5 million and Penn State fans were getting ready to fire him 4 games into this season this year.

-Here's the coaches around Narduzzi's salary. Navy, Memphis, Central Florida, Rutgers, Purdue, Cincinnati, Fresno State, Colorado State, Boston College-The ACC punching bag in football and basketball

Bleed the fanbase dry? Pitt has one of the lowest donation levels of any Power 5 school. We might very well be the lowest in the ACC.

Give the man a raise and let's hope he wants to be part of what he started here!
Bingo! There's a person with some common and business sense.
You give the coach a decent increase in salary to reward him for helping complete a successful season and let him know as PITT football results improve so will your compensation.

If you give the guy a big raise now, just to keep him, and he's more successful next year you play the "chase the coach with money game" which is hard to win!

On the other hand if he wants to be part of building a successful program he'll stay around hoping to be the PITT HC down the road in a program that he helped build!

Less risk than moving to a new program and starting all over again!

I'll put it this way.....if I wanted to spend an extra $100 on Pitt athletics, I'll send it to Pitt itself. Not Rivals.

-Its funny because this article is almost 2 years old. And the ACC was well North of $400 Million last year, destroying the previous year.

-Pitt cannot afford 200-400K which is peanut money to keep Canada and build the new Pitt brand to win? Again, step your ass up to the plate, Barnes.

Dan Mullen - 8 years head coaching experience, turned around a morbid Miss St program
Hugh Freeze - 8 years of head coaching experience, see Miss St, but put in Ole Miss
Charlie Strong - 6 years head coaching experience, won Sugar Bowl and had 2 top 15 finishes at the Ville
Kevin Sumlin - 9 years head coaching experience, top 5 finish and two other top 20 finishes
Butch Jones - 10 years head coaching experience, 4 top 25 finishes

None of those guys are in their second year of head coach and have all finished in the top 25. They all had previous head coaching experience prior to their current school. What were their first head coaching contracts?

They all also come from schools where their boosters and fans stepped up big time to make a change, even some that have had worse stretches of mediocrity than Pitt.

You are making your point with James Franklin. Do you know how much those fans donate? Do you know how much they pay for their seats? Do you know they continue to do that even though PSU has been mediocre for the better part of the past 15 years?

Those programs and fans get it. You don't.

I think Canada's here next season. But, it's not unlike Clemson didn't find a way to survive the departure of wunderkind Chad Morris. And, hell, Oklahoma loses exceptional OC minds often and continually scores at an impressive clip. If Pitt can't retain him, Narduzzi will find a quality replacement. I have faith.

What do the peer schools make in donations and other revenue on top of the bump? Pitt finally got on a somewhat level playing field via conference distributions with some of these programs. But it is still far behind in other revenues that really make a difference.

This is based upon TV revenue. What does that have to do with "bleeding the fan base dry"?

-Pitt is really far behind that it cannot afford to shell out a couple hundred grand to lock up an Elite Coordinator?

-I didnt realize Pitt was poor. I just linked an article showing the type of money the ACC brought in. It was what, $450 Million last year, Pitt got a 20 million stake in it. Cant afford 200-400K pay increase which again is peanut money? Thats dam greed.

Excerpted comments from AD Barnes from TRIB article on the "Town Hall" meeting that SB held in January, 2016. (I was there and heard this firsthand).

"He said one of the goals of his administration is to “strengthen our resource base in order to facilitate championship-level success.”

Pitt has lagged behind many ACC schools in that regard, even though the school is second in the conference in number of alumni. But there's a problem. He said Pitt's 2.6 percent engagement (donor activity) is second lowest in the ACC."

Matt Canada is still the OC at Pitt.

There is absolutely zero evidence that he is going anywhere other than the complexes existing in some Pitt's fans minds that apparently have them convinced that he's already left.

-For all I care Pitt can be dead last in all of Division 1 including every single midmajor. If Pitt is still making millions per year, it can afford 200-400K with ease which is my point, especially after dumping excess of $1 Million per year in expenses by getting rid of Jamie Dixon.

Literally every school in the ACC is running at a deficit. Even UPS is after the money going out to settle their scandal.

As of 2014 only 13 schools were not running at a deficit except the SEC which had 10 schools profitable.

That's not damn greed. That is finally putting money into badly needed facility upgrades, funding additional scholarships to enable other programs to be competitive. And that is giving far more support to coaching staffs all around the university, increasing travel budgets, etc to be more in line with our peer institutions.

Pitt is not poor. But if Pitt jumped from $40M to $60M per year in revenues due to the ACC increase, guess what, FSU jumped from $90M to around $100M as they got an increase as well related to the additions of Pitt and Syracuse. And what is that difference? Donations, ticket revenue, add revenue, etc.

And Pitt may very well be giving the "peanut" raise to Matt Canada after the season.

However, the reason Pitt will never move ahead of other institutions we consider peers is because of a fanbase that unfortunately has a warped sense of reality when it comes to college athletics, much like yourself.

How can Pitt keep Matt Canada? The same way it can keep any coach – by paying them their fair market value.

This is not a complicated situation. Either pay the man or don't and try to find someone else who can run this offense.

-Im talking about right now, meaning the current trend. I look at it as an investment opportunity. How many more football tickets can I sell if I give Matt Canada a raise and he in return brings Pitt a fun, exciting, winning, explosive offense that people want to watch instead of the boring Pitt, that gets their ass kicked on the field the last 30 years. You dont think I could sell a lot more tickets by keeping Matt Canada on board for say, the next 2 years? You really need a donation for that? A paltry 200-400K raise that will put more butts in the seats? I seem to recall Pitt breaking attendance records this year. I wonder if that high powered offense had anything to do with it? Hmmm

And who said that Pitt won't pay that? They very well may.

The whole part about the donation though is what makes the difference between programs being able to bring in top flight assistants, and head coaches, having very competitive salaries etc. Universities rely on their boosters for these types of things.

As for attendance records, when did they break any records? I only remember the PSU game and there were a ton of PSU fans. This offense has been fantastic to watch, yet I saw a bunch of empty yellow seats at the Duke and Cuse games. And this is after beating the #2 team in the nation on the road.

Again, disappointing support by the fans.

Pitt is making millions AFTER expenses to run the entire athletics department? You really think that?

The point is the much the bigger picture when it comes to financial resources in terms of Pitt vs the competition in the world of major college sports. Donations from boosters is a HUGE component of the athletics department revenue stream at the schools that Pitt is competing against for championships. A 2.6% participation rate isn't cutting it for Pitt: neither in terms of numbers of donors to athletics nor amount of $$$ donated.

So we'll just have to agree to disagree on this issue. The points made in my posts in this thread all stand, from my perspective.

Pitt's problem is an alumni problem. Always has been. It's the uncomfortable truth no-one wants to discuss.

Want more fans to show up at a Duke game in crappy weather? It HAS to be the alumni. Casual Pittsburgh sports fans (save for the diehard non-alum Pitt fans) just aren't going to do it. They aren't invested emotionally the way Pitt alums SHOULD be.

Alumni engagement is the number one problem Barnes and Gallagher need to solve.

-This is semantics, but Ill say this. Be cheap and let Canada walk, and if the offense becomes Jim Chaney part 2 while the defense remains the same and we are losing 6 or 7 games again, your football attendance will drop off a cliff. Winning boosts attendance. Losing destroys attendance. And let's not begin to talk how could it effect recruiting. You know, a complete scum Coach Brian Kelly telling every Pitt target, "I hope you have fun playing for a new OC every single year while learning a brand new offense every year because Pitts program stability in retaining Coaches is the equivalent to dogshit.

-You want to blow things over 200-400K? You sure chief? Been a while since Pitt won 8 games 2 seasons in a row in a real conference. But hey, we're short on donation, so F_ck Canada, we are Pitt, we are far to poor to afford 200-400K.

-Not when the teams record is 6-4. That stadium would be loaded if Pitt was 9-1 with a Top 5 ranking. Thats why you dont schedule 2 Top 10 non conference teams every year/

So your argument is that even with better alumni engagement, Pitt fans just won't show up for a game in November unless the visiting team is 10-0 or unless Pitt is 10-0 after feasting on Youngstown State, Akron, and Louisiana-Lafayette?

Talk about a defeatist attitude.

That is my point.... if he wants to be a HC, market value will place him out of OC for Pitt.

No question about it. If we want to retain him for an OC, then I totally agree

-No. Pitt will fill the stadium when they are ranked highly with a winning record. Pitt put over 50,000 in the stadium against FCS Villanova this year. If Pitt was ranked in the Top 5, the Syracuse and Duke games would be sellouts.

For the record, all of the bolded examples you site above have very healthy alumni booster programs that are flush with cash.

Saying that because Pitt now makes more money by being in the ACC and should just pay out big salaries isn't the final answer. There HAS to be greater buy in from the Panther Club and specifically, from an alumni base that largely ignores their role.
