Paul Chryst is running a good looking offense vs Miami with a lacrosse commit at QB.... Not hating on Duzz (I like him and hope he stays for a long time). Just want to give HCPC credit for being a good offensive coach since the clueless on this board hated him for taking a dumpster fire and making it into a 6-8 win roster. Been rooting for ACC all bowl season, but not tonight...

Why do people have to throw a criticism of Narduzzi with that qualifier "I like him, I hope he stays a long time"? Really? Why? If we are plugging around losing 6 games a year, I don't want him around any longer than necessary.

Because the best thing for Pitt is to stick with a coach for a while and be patient and allow him to build the program

Changing coaches every three yeats has not worked so well

Having said that Duzz does have to continue to show progress. The next two years are important

I will say he is light years ahead of Watson. Duz needs to pull the plug on him

Chryst is underrated here. It's not all because of Alvarez.
Just never had a good defensive coordinator/scheme/play caller. And did not do well with defensive recruiting at Pitt. If he could have had even an above average D.C. at Pitt he would have been pretty good. But he was just renting Pitt out until Wisconsin was open.

Just how bad was the ACC this year? Miami just got curb-stomped by a trash Wisconsin team. Plus, Georgia Tech got smacked around by a trash Minnesota team last night.

I know each game is different but this has me a bit nervous about our showing versus Stanford.

Chryst has now entered the Wannstedt zone. This place was apoplectic about the guy when he was here. And apoplectic is probably not a strong enough word. I know because I defended him and got an earful.

And frankly, his results weren't all that great. But at that time and since then, we needed stability. Alvarez called in some markers and got him hired. When Bielema surprisingly pulled up roots and took the Arkansas offer, Alvarez turned back to the hometown boy.

I feel very comfortable in saying that if Narduzzi left and had success elsewhere, this place would also opine about his "good old days here at Pitt." It happens every. single. time.

Don't forget Walt Harris. People hated him towards the end of his time here. Now he is looked back on as if he were Vince Lombardi. It will never change, so will just have to laugh at it. The golden days of beating Clemson and winning the Coastal will be funny to read about in 10 years.

What the program needed was an AD to stand up and challenge the SI article so that Pitt could continue recruiting and winning like it had for the previous 3 years. Instead they went into a tailspin that no coach could overcome. Florida was a nightmare with real criminals and they backed their coach and moved on. Oddly enough, I don’t remember seeing the SI article after it nailed DW. Makes me think sometimes that someone inside Pitt helped feed it.

As far as Chryst, the poster above nailed it. He didn’t like to recruit, never had an above average defense/DC. He was a very good offensive coach and got all he could out of what talent he had there.

So I understand correctly, you think the issue with Wannstedt was the SI article in relation to recruiting?

No, the “criminals of oakland” that were highlighted by the SI article were the final nails in the coffin for DW.

I think the article is/was a joke.

Don’t forget how weak the PAC-12 has been too. 1-6 in bowls last year and 0-2 so far this year.

Would be so like Pitt for them to be the ones that the PAC-12 snaps their bowl losing streak against though, unless Washington St beats Iowa St tomorrow.

Maybe you're right but the sharpest nails were reserved for his inexplicable coaching results.

I liked the guy and was among many who thought his return would bring Pitt back to its glory days. But he didn't. And the college landscape was changing. Pitt is no different than many other programs searching for the elusive success that few programs have now.

I am not discouraged as a fan because success isn't always about a NC. It's the week to week battles. I remain optimistic because I love the game. We all do or we wouldn't be here.

Always - Hail to Pitt.

You all do because of your allegiance to Pitt. Fans like myself that are not Almuni and only have an allegiance to Pitt because if the name they wear on the front are losing our patience and want to support a team we can get behind.

I can support a .500 program if it’s watching local kids, as I consider them my own. I find it MUCH harder to get behind a .500 program filled with kids from other states.

DW was one of “us” and had our support. Narduzzi was liked when he first came in, because he was a local from just over the border. Something has changed with him and honestly, I don’t like the direction he’s heading (and i’m not talking recruiting). He comes off as a different man from his core from when he first started and i’m losing faith. All I can do is sit back and watch. IMO, he has 2 years left...but it’s up to Lyke to guide him.

I don’t think anyone has delusions about what Chryst was here. He went 6-6 three years in a row.

Context however is pretty important. Chryst took over a pretty terrible situation and stopped the program from becoming Rutgers. He recruited a lot of talent that narduzzi turned into two 8 win seasons his first two years, and as that talent has left narduzzi is taking a step back.

I think that if Chryst has stayed, we likely become a solid 8 win type program. That offense simply works, for whatever reason, and I think that the way the fanbase reacted towards him was criminal.

Perhaps. But you're right that context is very important. And that's my point.

(And btw - many had a lot of delusions when Chryst was here. Fact.)

Well, all I will say is that I for one was sad to see Chryst go. I liked what he was building, and really thought he got a bad rap from the fanbase.

Our fanbase is...odd. Narduzzi seems to get a pretty big pass on a lot of things. Wanny got huge passes. Meanwhile, we had a basketball coach getting eviscerated for not making final fours.

What would you say those delusions were? Was it the typical “I don’t see any reason why pitt can’t average ten wins a year” type that we have?

I was sad from the stand point of more turn over and I thought Chryst was a good man. I too would have liked to see where it would all turn out. But there were flaws, as there are now.

I agree that he has changed since his start here at Pitt, but I do believe that some of that is good change. He seems more like a head coach and less like a DC that sleeps with the kids in the dorms. However with this change I will say that I did like how aggressive we were play calling, 4th quarter party, etc when he first started. Now he and Pitt football seem more "civil" which is a horrible word to connect to someone that wants tough and physical football.

Because the replacement will not be an improvement, almost with certainty, based on precedent. And everyone can cite Heather and Capel and unimportant soccer or wrestling or whatever they want, but the university is the common denominator, and it's football coaching hires range from disaster to meh.

But the problem is more with the whole program than the coaches. Chryst is an ok coach (frankly Wisconsin should be better than it is, it should be the perennial class of its division, falling behind Northwestern is bad).
Narduzzi is a fine coach, actually better than Chryst imo. At least at first, he worked his ass off. In programs properly focused from the top down on success, both have been much more successful here, especially Narduzzi. The commitment just isn't there. Yes, fans included, calm down, Pitt employees

Hence 5-7 to 7-5 ranges of seasons. Which the school is fine with, while the ACC keeps paying them so they can indulge in frivolous sports like lacrosse. But interest dies a little more every year. Eventually it will prove untenable. The ACC won't be suckers forever.

Indeed. All the antics from the first couple years seem to horrify the effete who inexplicably congregate here; but he was showing a pulse. It SHOULD have resulted in more of a windfall in recruiting. It didn't. And we know why. Taking recruiting to a higher level requires ... more nefarious antics. That's not tolerated at West Princeton. He knows it, and that's a big thing that has changed about him... recruiting and largely the game plans and schemes are basic and vanilla (not even the good Madagascar vanilla either; the Aldi-brand artificial goop) now. And it's getting basic and vanilla results.

The clock is ticking, just a matter who jumps first. Can he find an upgrade job like Graham and Chryst did despite mediocre results, and skedaddle? Or will Pitt get nudged enough by empty stadiums and .500 doldrums in the next couple years to reluctantly launch the creaky Hiring Committee out of mothballs?

It again, all comes down to context. It took Dave 3 really bad years to build up to his best years, after taking over a program that was in pretty solid shape.

Then, when he finally built his program, he couldn’t win a conference that was closer to the level of a mid major conference than a P5 one.

Narduzzi has his faults, but he has at least won a division AND when he took over a decent situation win 8 games two years in a row rather than missing 3 straight bowls.

Just a dumb post.

Yeah when wisky has had a pathetic offense all year and Pitt was running for 400 yards a game did you write this post the other way?

Cherry picking games and then lamenting on a message board is just ill informed
