I'M SHOUTING BECAUSE

I like your optimism, but if you follow college sports at all, the divide between the haves and the have nots is growing. The commitment to be a force may not be there for Pitt, not at the price it costs. I could be wrong, but that's what I think I see.

you've already given up on gallagher? and barnes?

i think gallagher should be given a BIT more time than ~16 months or so as chancellor and barnes a BIT more time than less than a year as AD before we go back to the nordy/smiley narrative of they won't do enough for pitt athletics for pitt to be big-time again.

god forbid you try and become relevant in college sports.

I mean, I don't want to necessarily blame God, but something is certainly forbidding Pitt fans from enabling Pitt to be big time.

Louisville's athletic department is fully endowed thanks to fan support. Pitt's is nowhere close.

Understand this simple fact...
Boosters and fans drive athletics, not administrators.

OK thanks, Pitt just needs more fans with money. Lets start a collection.

I generally enjoy the community and I like talking Pitt sports. Just because I don't let myself get all bent out of shape over Ws and Ls doesn't mean I don't enjoy the games. I don't understand why this is so hard to understand.

Because I like talking Pitt sports with (relatively) sane people?

Like I've said - I want Pitt to win. I get more entertainment value out of Ws than Ls. But I won't let myself be legitimately affected by the outcomes of sporting events ever again. I've had several instances (Nova, Butler, the Steelers-Cardinals SB) where I had way too strong an emotional reaction to the outcome of a game I have no control over. I did some self-reflection and decided I wasn't going to let a game influence my life to that extent. So, I'll be disappointed to see Pitt lose, but I'm not going to let it affect my life. My actual life is serious enough that I don't have time for that.

Lol. "Real fans." So only people who act like babies after losses are real fans?
How presumptous can one person be to come on a sports message board and tell fans how serious they should be about their support of their team? if you're a casual observer, then go to the university site where you scan the headlines. That's all that really matters to you.

I think people who need to make a distinction between "true" fans and "fake" fans are morons. It's unsurprising that you do something like that.

And you missed the point. But again, that's not surprising because you're the type of dude who'd rather tear down Steven Adams, a Pitt alum, while celebrating TJ McConnell, not a Pitt alum, for their relative NBA and college success.

I'm a Pitt fan. I want Pitt to win. But I'm not about to throw a tantrum on the boards because they don't play well. Sports just aren't that important, dude.

But this is a sports message board. So what else do you want to talk about? I love these people who don't care about sports and their results don't affect their lives so much, yet they spend so much effort on these boards trying to tell people to get some perspective.

Ski, what do you want to discuss? I get bored with sports too. A lot more as I get older. Scalia dying? The immaturity of the Republican Debates and candidates? What is a good taco and where can you get them in the Pittsburgh area? Energy strategy moving forward? Bourbon? Rye? Vodka? Gin? as a favorite adult beverage? I am all for these discussions. But unfortunately it is a Pitt BB board and when you criticize others for their perspective in being upset at another blowout loss, you kind have lost perspective yourself. Because on a Pitt BB board, I would expect that this is exactly what the topic du jour would be.

Or before them, or after them.

So what is the excuse for pre 1995?
My answer pre-1995 is that Pitt has been run generally by a coterie of incompetent jackasses who couldn't mange their way out of a paper bag. And that includes O"Connor and Posvar which takes us back to about 1960. The AD's were just as clueless-most of them had no background in athletics(Bozik) or came from backwash programs(James). Jeff Long was a competent guy but his boss was an idiot who didn't support athletics so he left!

Got it...
It's always someone else.

And hoops peaking under those two a crazy coincidence.

Yea, that's absolutely right. Dixon, a guy who East Montana State didn't even want, was hired in one of the worst run coaching searches in NCAA history when he was hired as a last resort and appears to have evolved into the coach we expected he'd be when he was hired in the first place-with NO credentials to justify his hiring- a typical hire by the two JA's Nerdy and Pedersen who then give him his longest contract extension when his record was at its nadir. The epitome of stupidity-Nerdy and Pedey boy!

And that coach did more at Pitt than anyone in your lifetime.

There is a pretty good taco joint on the Southside near 11th street!

Seriously, I get bored with the one trick ponies, but it comes with the territory when you are mired in mediocrity. I say step away to those who tire of the noise.

I am not saying that at all. We can get better. But we will never, and I mean never, be ALABAMA in FB or Duke in hoops. We don't have the fan base to support an elite level. Just my opinion, but I have travelled for Pitt games, and except for rare occasions, the other team has more people there.

I'm talking football also stat geek, if you think Pitt can't reach those standards, whats the point?
Isn't that like asking, if I am never going to win the NY Marathon, why train for it? Pitt can be good. But we will have peaks and valleys. I guarantee that. To not recognize that is just setting yourself up for angst.

So, you wanted Pitt to let him walk in 2011??
I would have let him walk before I would have given him 5 more years with over 4 years left on his current contract. Why? Because it should have been clear to anyone who was watching the progress of the program that he had bottomed out and that things were broken. I may have given him 2 but never 5 more years.

Lots of sustained success by retaining that coach, right?
The same retention now being lamented.

Isn't it possible that Jamie Dixon is a great coach and did great things here, but now he has fallen on hard times? I mean, can't both sides be right?

Not on the internet, I guess....

Sure it can.
Which is why is silly to complain now about a decision 5 years ago.

The decision five years ago was right at the time imo though I was tired of Jamie flirting with other jobs.

In hindsight it isn't good.

There is no difference between winning 19 games and not going dancing than there is to winning 9 games and not going dancing unless the team in scenario 1 is extremely young and improving.

So if we aren't going to be good, we might as well have saved a lot of money and sucked.

There is a pretty big difference actually. BC is miles farther away from making the tourney than a middle tier ACC team (not saying Pitt specifically, but why team). With the middle tier, a couple of good players can elevate you just enough. A high D1 team that wins only 9 is about 10 players away from getting there.

And there is the reminder I needed about why I don't post on the free board.

80% idiots yelling for heads to roll and 20% rebuttals from you and SoufOaklin4Life taking everything literally.

Didn't realize you don't mean what you write. I will make a mental note for future reference.

You know we were Alabama in FB from 75-81and we didn't fall back because of lack of fan support, we fell back because the admin. pulled the plug on the best coach in college FB. I believe you underestimate Pitt's ceiling,.

Oh well if that's the case, I expect we will start beating Bama for recruits any year now. My mistake, those 25 years of not being Alabama was just a blip. I thought they may be a little more to right the ship from.

Here we go. I knew this was coming next. Dude your like a broken record. Your right! All Pitt's problems in football and basketball is their fans.........geezus man

We had two coaches during that span, right?
Why did both look elsewhere?
More money at bigger programs.

Not everything...
But a department war chest makes correcting a mistake easier.

I mean even Unc messed up a hoops hire with Dougherty... And bought him out to lure Roy back.
