85-61 win at Syracuse but Smith only had 10 points. Now 6-1 with wins against Clemson, UNC and Pitt, they have established themselves as the second best team in the league. After losing by 11 at home against Duke, they have won 6 in a row all by double digits except for the game Saturday. Louisville won at FSU 92-76 and 70-50 at UVA. They are 4-0 on the road in conference. Pretty impressive.

The rest of their schedule only has 2 potential challenging games, at SMU and Pitt at home. They could go 17-3 or better in conference. They are heading towards a top 5 seed.

Clemson also heading to 6-1 winning at Ga Tech. We had better get back on track tomorrow night.

I was watching a few of the SEC games as well as the Lou v Syr and the first half of Clem v GT. Biggest "surprise" was Ole Miss victory @ Alabama by 10. Held 'Bama to fewer than 70 points and created 21 turnovers. I watched some of Auburn v MS ST which was a blow out. I can see why that league is so good. Lots of strong teams

Chris Beard is one of the best in the biz. Really wish UVA would try to pry him out of Oxford, but they won't touch him because of whatever went down at Texas. ...oh, and he's already making $5 million a year in Oxford. I think he's worth every penny.

Louisville beats the new Kenny Payne. Syracuse would be crazy to give Autry another year. The expectation for any coacj now is NCAAT in Year 1. Look at Lou and WVU. Look at Mizzou. 0-19 to an NCAAT lock. If you dont make it by Year 2 now in this new era of free agency, that's a really bad sign. I think Syracuse should go after Darian Devries.

I don't see them making a change after this year. Probably next year if things don't turn around.

It's not the end of the world if you don't get in the NCAAT by year 2. Steve Forbes is in year 5 and has yet to get the Deacs in the tourney.

For a school like Syracuse, in this new era of free agency, the expectation has to be the NCAAT in Year 1, certainly by Year 2. For Pitt, if Capel and all the players left, I'd give the new coach 2 years to show he is making positive strides.

Forbes is a bad example because because he started before free agency.

There are gonna be some big jobs open after this season:

Syracuse, Indiana, UCLA?

UNC if it falls apart?

At this point, I think UNC wins enough to get in but I dont know what Adrian Autry is doing to make you think he's the guy at Syracuse. Lots of open ACC jobs:

BC
UVa
VT
Miami

Maybe
Wake
GT
FSU
Cal
Syr
UNC

I think Madsen and Stoudamire are relatively safe. Forbes…I dunno, does that program really want to be buying out contracts?

Probably. But I think colleges need to have more of an NBA mentality. There are thousands of free agents every year. By Year 2, you have to get pretty close to the NCAAT. Not sure what the purpose of keeping a coach now to "build" something. There's no building. Every year, you have a new team. So you need to win in Year 1, definitely by Year 2.

Louisville (29) loss is now a Q1. OSU (31) was down 17 at half at Wisky (24) but rallied and lost 70-68. Currently tonight’s game is a Q1 given that FSU is 73. Pitt favored by 2.5. FSU not a good defensive team so it will likely be another high scoring game. Ironically Pitt moved down to 28 because Missouri jumped up to 27 after upsetting Florida. Unfortunate they weren’t this good last year.

They lost Caleb Grill shortly after beating us. He hit the dagger last night. Had he not gotten injured, they win a couple games last year and we make the NCAAT.

Until we take defense and rebounding a little more seriously, or at least approach it with the same zest that we approach the offensive end, I think we are going to wind up pretty middling in this conference. I think like maybe 11-9, if we don't improve the effort.

Couldn't agree more. Without rebounding and defense, it won't matter how much offense and points we generate. With the way the conference is shaking out, Pitt is probably around 4 or 5 in the conference. Clearly Duke, 'Ville and Clemson are top 3. The rest are TBD.

I have to agree that Pitt is in that 11-9, 12-8 conference record territory. In previous years, that would be more than enough to get Pitt into the NCAAT with a strong ACC. Now it has them on the bubble. We'll need 10 more wins, including in the ACCT, to feel secure about a bid.

Pitt needs this win tonight. 3 game losing streaks in the ACC aren't good. Then we MUST beat Clemson at home for a high quality, home win.

Clemson is not "clearly" top 3. Lou blew them out. We lost to Lou close and to Duke. We lost to the best 2 teams.

Very surprising outcome for MSU. Given how physical they are, I expected them to compete much better against Auburn playing their first game without their superstar center Broom.

It shows how tough road games are; also, the refs seemed to be calling many more touch fouls in that game than when we played MS State in Starksville. Not saying that Pitt would've won if the game were called with more fouls, but it might have been closer. The Auburn gym and its fans ("The Jungle", I believe?) were certainly a factor

That’s why tonight and Saturday are key to elevating Pitt above Clemson. If you look at the remaining schedules, it’s pretty clear the best case for Pitt is to finish 3rd.

We could be "clearly" #3 after Saturday. But not really, even. UNC and Wake are 4-1. Wake has maybe a really good Big 3 in Sallis, Hildreth, and Reid and they can go 15-5 or 14-6 potentially. And UNC has the talent to do the same. And of course, SMU has some talent and a good coach.

So really, its Duke & Lou and then Pitt, Clem, UNC, SMU, and Wake fighting for probably 3 spots.

SMU has Pitt, Clemson, UNC and Louisville all only at home so the unbalanced schedules play a big role in how this plays out. Pitt is already 0-2 against these 6 teams and has road games remaining at Wake, SMU, UNC and Louisville with only Clemson and UNC at home.

I forgot about SMU, probably because this is the first year playing them. But they have to be considered as a possible top 3 team along with Duke, Clemson and 'Ville. I'm not convinced about Wake yet and UNC is inconsistent, like we are. Our problem is we can score but we can't prevent our opponent from scoring more and we can't rebound.

And Pitt has road games vs

Duke
Lou
UNC
SMU
Wake

All the big dogs except Clemson. Then the other roadies vs FSU, ND, NC St, Syr arent gimmies. Pitt may have the toughest in-conference SOS.

I think FSU is likely to open. Hamilton would be 77 by the time next season tips off. Young & Grant have deals through 28 or 29. If the monied boosters aren't willing to make a substantial increase in money for talent, it doesn't make any sense at all that they would be willing to pony up the money to buy out a contract.

Young is a good coach but cant get anyone to play for him. Not sure BC cares about basketball enough.
