Matt Canada...not so fast?

Not sure why people jumped to conclusions
Glad they are interviewing outside
Me too. Jackson would be a pretty solid option. He obviously struggled as a head coach, but he ran some good offenses in Cincy and Baltimore and who else are you going to hire that knows the AFC North as well as that guy?

They are also looking at Dwayne Haskins. Makes you wonder about Ben's future if they are starting to look at external OCs and QBs.

And no, Haskins wouldn't start but I don't think going into next year evaluating Rudolph and another young QB like Haskins would be a bad thing. You can't really do that with them on the bench though.

Dulac reported that Canada was just a candidate last week. If Ben is playing another year, Canada is probably one of the worst OC options for him and a more traditional OC would be a better fit.

Haskins is nothing more than a potential No. 4 arm for camp right now. If he's anything better than that, sweet. If they bring him in and don't like what they hear, no big deal.

Tomlin should have a completely free hand in what could possibly be his last season.

He should be allowed to fight to save his job. I think with all the likely turnover, those chances are extremely bleak.

Right, or a 3rd arm. They released the Duck and Josh Dobbs is a free agent come March. Probably not a bad chance to take on a backup. He acts up, you cut him.

Matt Canada is probably also one of the OCs who Ben would want to work with, given their familiarity. No idea what Jackson's personality is but he's going to have to be willing to share play calling with Ben if he comes here.

Probably right about Haskins but he does have upside, unlike Dobbs or Duck.

I don't know if the familiarity matters much. The Steelers had some good success with Canada ideas early in the season then completely abandoned them as the season progressed.

I was confused by that.

we did have success early.

later, we did less Canada, but virtually every time we did it was a negative play.

At that point we were only using Canada running elements, no passing elements. The play calls were entirely predictable. It killed the running game, almost like it was intended to.

Only Running Conner parallel to the line of scrimmage against misdirection and motion, will kill a running game.

I’ll simply say when the production from a unit falls off a cliff and sucks
The answer is never an assistant on that same staff .
If the assistant actually had the answers the unit wouldn’t suck

No. If he wasn't a system guy from Ohio St his name would not mean anything more than those 2 guys. Throw in his bad attitude and that equals a stay the hell away from. Ohio State hasn't had a QB produce in the NFL since Shane Falco in 2000 and that was a weird year in its own right.

The Steelers are apparently trying to interview Pep Hamilton for the OC position as well.

Stupendous reference, extremely underrated movie

Last OSU QB I can remember with real success was Bobby Hoying in the late 90s. His QB coach was none other than Walter Harris. I remember him looking promising and then he got absolutely destroyed after playing behind a terrible Eagles line.

Haskins certainly has the physical tools. That was the real limitation with Duck.

Jackson did such a great job with Baker Mayfield. Ben will just tell him to STFU.

Pep Hamilton also interviewing for the OC job. He did a solid job with Justin Herbert this past season.

It's only a matter of time before Luke Getsy starts getting OC interviews. Might not be this year but I think it will happen soon.

FWIW, Canada officially got the job today.
Kind of a bad look if you ask me. Canada was leaked last week......it was a hire out of familiarity but then someone internally realized, holy crap, the "Rooney Rule" and our last names are "Rooney". Whoops. So they go out and give cursory interviews to two African American coaches, they never intended to hire.

Or were the Rooney's/Tomlin responding to a QB tantrum?

Meh
The Rooney rule isn’t about hiring - it’s about interviewing

I’m not thrilled with this hire because promoting an assistant hasn’t worked lately .
