May be reaching the end

Men's basketball certainly isn't great. It doesn't even have the talent to be great. And it's nowhere near what it was from 2002-2011..

No disrespect to the hoops team, but you can't lump them in with women's volleyball and men's soccer. Totally different level there.
in total considering 2002-2011 and maybe a couple more years for sure but this moment things look good for a very good year and considering the last 2 might be at the start of greatness with admittedly a ways to yet go

at least the MBB program gives us something to be legitimately excited about now and the near term future with Capel, Fish is and has been there and MS is close to great but still early in their greatness run obviously

What?

No. It's not the start of greatness. Pitt just whiffed on every top of the board recruit they wanted. You can't have greatness on a such a limited budget. You can hope for 20+ and MAYBE a second weekend in the NCAA tourney for a ceiling if everything aligns. You're not going to be a legitimate contender though.

Pitt has a better chance at making the Sweet 16 in basketball than the football playoffs. You only need an 8 man rotation in basketball and less money to be successful.

yeah, kinda why I used the word might and start of greatness

I don't claim to possess the answer key in everything coming but this looks like all things point in the right direction and while it's been a while, I think it can happen in BB under Capel with the current and likely near future environment of transfers, I don't see it really pointed in any particular direction let alone the right direction under the Duzz and really don't think he has the chops or mindset to adapt or fix and that's based on the last few years but really all his years where early on I think he really was very much the right fit for Pitt

Duzz doesn't need to adapt or fix anything. In fact, there is nothing that needs fixing or adapting.

Big money alums & boosters can choose to throw their money at NIL to field a competitive team or they can choose not to. They have obviously chosen not to. Quite honestly, it's the wise decision and I don't fault them for it.

People can bitch and whine all they want, Pitt isn't going to have a good football team until a whale decides they want to have one. Until then, you can either find some enjoyment in mediocre to piss poor football, or you can bitch and moan. But the product isn't going to get any better regardless of who walks the sideline and tries to compete on a shoestring NIL budget.

I responded mainly about Capel and BB and the start of greatness and you go back to FB which I provided for comparison

maybe I'll stick with one small bit of info at a time for you

Capel is in year 7. He's in the midst of upper level mediocrity where he will continue to remain.

sounds like you are a Jamie fan, so am I and never wanted him to go and would've been happy to see his slog ball because it simply meant we were winners and truly at the level of great for a few years

not sure that method works in today's CBB world and Jamie is great but Capel might be a better fit for the current world and near term future IF he gets the financial support too

do I think Capel is a great X and O's coach? no, but he's not terrible and I think high level talent might want to play for him

if he pieces together a very good team, I think his in game coaching could falter, but face it JD's uptight pucker inducing method didn't set up to make Pitt break through either

That depends on the size of the bag he's handing out. Obviously this year, the high level talent wanted to embrace the Hog, or go to Chapel Hill or Rocky Top. Although I don't think the players that signed with UNC or Tennessee would be considered high level talent. At least not going by their recruiting ranking and offer sheet.

I’ve greatly enjoyed watching Pitt basketball the past 2 seasons and this one so far. Enjoy looking for those black clouds.

ok, maybe just say you agree with what I wrote, "Capel might be a better fit for the current world and near term future IF he gets the financial support too"

That goes for any coach, tbh.
even top level funds won't work in coaching systems that players can't pick up quickly as transfers still happen if relationships and team culture don't work

high level talent players usually don't come ready or prepared to play much defense, the coach gets that from them or fails

Capel's teams are pretty much a mixed bag defensively.

I'm not looking for black clouds.

Pitt has been my favorite football team since I can remember. Not so in basketball. I like Pitt & UVA, but my favorite team has been Kentucky since the days of Sam Bowie, Mel Turpin, Derrick Hord, Dirk Minniefield, Jim Master Blaster, Bret Berup, Fred Cowan and Dicky Beal.

The last 5 years of Kentucky basketball has felt like watching Pitt football in the 90s.

Before Ben Howland, I only kept up with Pitt basketball when they would show up and beat the hell out of UK. Preseason NIT early 90s at Rupp. I think a holiday tourney in 99?
