Messi and MLS

I have seen Messi play live over 20 times. In the Champions League, La Liga and a Copa del Rey final where he scored the most amazing goal I have ever witnessed. There is something about seeing him live which makes it memorable. When he has the ball in a threatening position, the stadium comes alive. The goal against Atletic Bilbao in the Camp Nou is the best goal I have ever seen in person, but there is something about his play that makes almost every touch in the final 30 meters magical.

I saw the group stage match against PSV Eindhoven where he scored a hat trick with Masha’s brother and when we were walking to the Metro station after the match there were hundreds of Dutch fans drinking beer and happily singing as they walked down the street. Dutch fans are known for being rowdy and Evgenyi asked me why they seemed so happy when their team had lost 4-0. I said they were happy because for the rest of their lives they will be able to talk about how they were there and saw Lionel Messi score a hat trick. That is the Messi Effect.

I have seen him make the same move he made last night a hundred times. He loves coming across the pitch right to left at the top of the box. There always are two or three defenders there and he usually looks for a low opening. Either between defenders or a nutmeg. The shot usually is low and he gets it off incredibly fast, with little or no windup, and very hard. When you watch him play, most of the time you don’t know when the shot is coming because it comes in a flash whenever he sees that opening.

Jerome Boateng was one of the best CBs of his generation. Against Bayern Munich in the Champions League, Messi scored a hat trick nutmegging him 3 times. The first two times he nutnegged him were 1-on-1 with Messi coming down the right side. Boateng was so off balance he went down after the nutmeg and Messi then chipped over Neuer. The third time was a right to left run like last night where he found space between Boateng’s legs and drilled a low shot between them, off the right post and in.

Last night the defenders played so far off of him that he didn’t need to look for space low. He had space to get the ball up and go for the upper left corner. From the second he got the ball and saw how much space he was given, he was going for that shot. He is going to put that shot right where he put it last night 9.5 times out of 10. Maybe 9.8.

Another Miami beatdown. 4-1 at Philadelphia. They advance to the final Saturday at Nashville. Tried to get tickets but its harder than Taylor Swift. And secondary market prices are Taylor Swift-like too. That's why its cheaper to fly down to Miami to see him.

Messi scored one from 30 yards out but Andre Blake's slow reaction time was cringey. Truthfully, a few of the goals he's scored have been borderline blooperish defending/goalkeeping.

Announcers said he had less than 50 touches which is crazy low. He is notorious for walking around the pitch and only getting involved when he needs to be and that was really noticeable and a little annoying watching him live. He really wasnt involved a ton but then all of a sudden he appears and its a shot, good pass, goal, etc. His goals per touch rate in MLS so far has to be off the charts. I just wonder how different he was to watch live 10 years ago. Would he be working harder away from the ball or defensively?

Back to Miami, they are basically an SMF dream team. Its exactly what I want to see in MLS, even if you take Messi out of it:

Busquets and Alba - 2 older legends who can still play

Yedlin - USMNT

Kamal Miller - Canada's starting CB and also played at Syracuse

Josef Martinez - one of the best MLS strikers ever and a regular for Venezuela

Robert Taylor - plays for Finland, which isnt great but kinda cool

Benjamin Cremaschie and David Ruiz - 2 American teenagers who have both scored in this tournament and guys I like to keep an eye on for future USMNT

They just signed a 20 year old Argentinian who scored 16 goals in the Argentinian league and supposedly was going to Europe but wanted to play with Messi. He's supposed to be the real deal.
Don’t forget Kryvtsov, who played 13 years for a European domestic power and unless I’m wrong has played in plenty of champions league matches and won plenty of domestic cups/trophies.

They said he won 17 trophies for Shakhtar Donetsk and although they were a UCL regular, I dont consider them a power and I never heard of him before July. Also, FWIW, Shakhtar has been playing in Kiev for years since the pro-Russian separatists started stuff.

All the Ukrainian sides which were based in the occupied parts of Donbas have been playing in Kyiv, Lviv or other non-occupied cities. Shaktar still has a big fan base and outdraws Kyiv Dynamo in Kyiv.

Mike, what’s the fan base dynamic like with Shaktar?

Super fun tournament to watch though 90% of that is due to Messi. Gotta say I was pretty surprised by MLS's dominance though they played all the games at home. That wasn't exactly fair but I am sure Liga MX wanted it that way for their American fans. Mexican teams didnt really bring many fans though which surprised me.

Great idea by whoever came up with this tournament. Having both leagues stop to so that all the teams would field their best teams was key. Without having a local team, its hard to follow a whole MLS season but this short one month tournament was great for the casual MLS fan.

And Messi is well, Messi. So cool to see him doing this in American and maybe cooler that it really seems like he cares and wants to be here. You can see by his body language and the way he interacts with teammates that he really wants to be here. He said in an interview with Apple that when he was at PSG, his happiest times were when he was away with Argentina and he was looking to be happy again or something to that effect. And he thinks he found that with Miami. So you can see that for him, its not about money. The guy is insanely rich.

Another MLS export. MLS has become a legit league as far as selling players the last few years. Definitely moving in the right direction.

They're not just selling American players anymore either. Plenty of others (especially South Americans) are coming to the MLS because they know deals like this are a possibility.

You think he'll get a shot at some point or just become one of the many guys they loan out?

No he won’t go on loan I don’t think. They’ve been looking for a #2 keeper and that’s what he will be short term. But they signed him to a 7 year deal which seems to indicate an opportunity to be more. Maybe he competes with Sanchez to be the #1 as the season goes on.

Messi is going to play in the Cup vs Cincy and looks like he'll sit some regular season games.

Lol. This is nuts. If he misses MLS games, I can’t imagine they squeak into the playoffs. So they’ll win the double and qualify for champions league while missing the MLs playoffs.

They already made the Champions League so I was pretty positive he wouldn't play Wednesday on a few days rest for what has become a pretty meaningless trophy. As a new Miami fan, I hate this. If he's going to rest, it has to be Wednesday. Look, they are the best team in MLS right now and have a legit shot to go 8-2-2 and make the playoffs. And if they make the playoffs, no one is beating them. If you look at their schedule, its very doable:

Losses
@ LAFC
@ Atlanta (lets say Messi sits out on turf)

Wins
Nash
SKC
Tor
NYCFC
Cin
Cha
@ RBNY

Draws
@ Orl
@ Chicago

Then need to win on the Tepper Turf on the last day.

I think they call it the U20 initiative or something like that where they are signing young South American players that they sell to Europe in a couple years. If you are a fan of one of these teams, you like these talented players coming in. As a casual fan, I'd rather see some American who played at UNC or Wake.

Messi has already said that he's not going to sit out games just because they are on turf. He pointed out that he used to play on turf all the time.

I know he said that but he isnt going to play every game so if you are going to sit, you figure it would be a game on turf. I think he plays on the weekend in New Jersey and then sits out the Wednesday nighter at home vs Nashville.

But the 7 year deal thing is a way for them to spread the money out which makes FFP more doable…even though we aren’t talking about a lot of money here. Who knows, if he doesn’t work out they can loan him out over the next several years. But unless things change, he was brought in to play for Chelsea this season.

They outdraw Dynamo most of the time. Both teams play most of their matches in Kyiv. Some of the stadiums in other cities have been damaged . I suspect the majority of their fans are originally from the Donbas and got out in 2014 when the Russians first invaded. Kyiv was primarily a Russian speaking city then, so it was a good place to go for Russian speakers from Donetsk and Luhansk. Plus, being the capital and largest city. I imagine most of the people who moved there from those two Oblasts always were Shaktar fans because Donetsk was the biggest city there and Shaktar the biggest team, or are Shaktar fans now because their local team no longer is active. Shaktar has been playing there since 2014.

Nice atmosphere in Cincy. This team is too much for Miami.

Messi! Out of nowhere!

You just have to smile and laugh.

What a pass. Was watching it in a bar that had the Hounds game on too (blew a 3 goal lead but scored late to win) and Copa Libertadores on my phone. Good night of soccer

Penalties again.

I'm watching on Telemundo. It says its channel 62 so its probably a channel you can get OTA. Lots of grandmas with no cable watching Messi.
The guy has to take a hundred pics on the field after the game and he’s happy to do it.

Cool Seeing guys like Vazquez, who might be my favorite MLS player, ask Messi to sign his FC Cinn jersey.

That’s right! Forgot about that.

He wouldn’t have played, right? Or at least wouldn’t have started.

Really surprised he played at FCC and still dont agree with it but I guess we'll never know if he would have played in Pgh. I would say definitely not if it was on the Highmark turf. If they moved to Acrisure, I guess he may have though they may have thought they could have won without him.

Well that’s my point. It’s a USL team vs an MLS team. Miami plays its starters/first teamers and they shouldn’t need him. Unless he dresses, sits the bench, and has to come in if the game is still in doubt late.

How many miles does he log per game? I know Martinez said he needs a break, and I get that…but watching him play for Miami reminds me of Wayne Gretzky throughout his entire career hanging out at the blue line cherry picking.

He's going to play as many games as he can. He even played in two testimonial games (for others) a few months ago in Argentina.

He does stand around a lot but he did the same thing in the World Cup. It's how he's most effective now

Messi gets back on defense when he needs to, but most forwards do the same thing. They run less than MF players. Most CBs hold back on offense except the tall ones come up for corners.

Against Cadiz last Sunday, they said that Frenkie DeJong might have set a record by running more than 22 kms in a match. He’s a MF but Xavi started him at CB due to injuries. He likes to take the first pass in the defensive end for Barcelona and setup the offensive play. He did that against Cadiz even though he was playing CB. His “heat map” from the match looked just like it does on the offensive end. when he is playing midfield but with much more red on the defensive final third.

He was voted MOM by the writers.

He is walking an awful lot. Never saw him play live at Barca so I dont know how to compare because he was always known for that. But he isnt even involved in the game unless he scores or assists it seems. As I said, his goal or assist per touch rate has to be a record. He doesn't even get the ball that much.

Miami is such a fun team to watch. The 2 American teenagers flashed yesterday and I love to see those up and coming players.

Yeah I never watched him much because I never watch LaLiga or League 1. But watching him play now, he walks more than any forward I’ve ever seen. Who is it on the freeboard who ignorantly always makes fun of soccer players for walking? Is it Souf? In any event, when I watch Messi now, I can’t help but think that he’s right.

NTOP. I think of him all the time watching Messi because he is doing nothing for 90% of the game. But then he pops up and its GOAL. I am quite sure he hasnt had a tackle or interception yet in the US. I know thats not his game but just saying.

Weird. Something that Souf and NTOP agree on.

Messi is a real unifier.

I dont think Souf knocks soccer players for walking. That's not even ANYONE says, even the soccer hater because most people realize how much they run. Souf just hates it for the same reason 70 year old dudes hate it. Its different and its not baseball, football, or basketball. But he is a 45 year old liberal so go figure.

You're supposed to be a liberal to like soccer? I think some posters here disprove that?

Just more likely to like it. Conservatives can like it too but are often scared of it because its foreign and different.

I fell asleep last night with Miami leading 1-0 without Messi playing. I went to my espn app to check the final score and I see they won and Messi scored in the 89th minute.

I just laughed. What else could I do? It’s amazing. And what a great goal too.

I guess they are chasing Chicago a Montreal for the wildcard playoff birth? Montreal won but Chicago lost. So Miami picked up 3pts. Guess it was a good night. I’ve never once looked at the MLS table until now.

He came off the bench and had 2 goals the last game he played there too. Seems like a good set up for him

I'm a Miami fan now and I'm not even looking at the other teams. 7-2-2 the rest of the way gets "us" in. Its definitely doable. They started Alba + plus mostly a B squad vs RBNY and were up 1-0 when Messi, Busquets, and Yedlin came in. This is the best team in MLS and probably by a mile so its very doable that they go 7-2-2 at least. They are 6-0-2 with him if you count their PK wins as draws.

You're not a Miami fan, lol :)

Unless of course you'll still bleed pink and black AFTER Messi leaves the team?

What are the chances of that? You're just sort of a band wagon jumper, just chasing the next popular thing :)
