Great start by Pitt with two open champs (Bonaccorsi over Embree (Michigan) 7-1 and Phillippi over Madrigal (Oklahoma) 4-2) and a FR/SO champ (Matthews). Thomas (3d) and Wentzel (6th, MFF) placed as well. Rahmani, Stout and Harvey went 3-2 in tough open brackets. Bulsak went 2-2 at 149 and Jake Cherry went 1-2 at 141 and Cole Nye was 1-2 at 197. Colello went 1-2 with a nice win over an Ohio State wrestler at 157.

Also, great performances by Kemerer and Newell to take 2d in FR/SO, Hunter Kernan, taking 3d in FR/SO 165, Crawford, 184, 4th FR/SO bracket. Fenton beat Camacho for 3/4 in FR//SO. Cooley took 6th at 197 FR/SO. Tyler Greer went 2-2 in his college debut in the FR/SO bracket at 149. Meglino dropped a 4-3 decision in the consys and went 0-2 at 174. Sciutto went 0-2 at 157.

sorry if I missed anyone.

Campbell will be a tough match. It had six individual champs at the Southeast Open this past weekend. 2 FR/SO and 4 Open champs.

Thanks for the update. Good showing.

Are there any links to the brackets available? Id loce to look them over. Didnt see them on Flo

Disappointed with Cooley’s showing. Also, Wentzel forfeited two matches because of an injury. Hopefully, it’s not serious but he looks like one of those wrestlers who is going to spend a good deal of his career injured.

Looks like Nino pretty much dominated his bracket. Could be in for a very big year.

What is going on with McGill? Is he injured? Doesnt seem to be present with these tourneys nor Blue/Gold

Lastly, I noticed that Fenton was wrestling unattached. Is he redshirting this year?

Someone else in another thread said that McGill has been injured since last summer and just got cleared to wrestle 2-3 weeks ago.

Impressive performance this afternoon vs. Campbell. Matthews, Wentzel, Micky, and Meech looked great, all beating ranked wrestlers. Tough outing for Nino, looked like he was well on his way to a rout but got rolled through.

Agreed Ryno that's a solid team we dominated today and Mathews getting a pin against a ranked Heil was big time

Even Newel did a nice job too. The kid he wrestled kid qualified for NCAA's last year. It was the freshman's first dual match so he wrestled in fits and starts but you can see what he is capable of when he goes full offense.

Wentzel was impressive. He didn't just beat that kid he controlled him. That kid placed in the SE Conference championships twice (took second last year) and just won the southern open by pinning Kennedy Monday in the finals. Wentzel still makes me nervous wrestling on his hip so much and hanging on to dangerous positions, and I worry about him giving up reversals and four point reversals, but he seems to have a system to his madness.

I agree Ryno. Nino looked really good right up until the point he tried to turn that kid. He looks like he learned a lot from his freestyle training this summer - stayed off his knees for counter attacks, worked angles for his set ups. He just started to press once he got behind. I don't think it will be close next time.

Meech looks like he learned to depend on his second attack instead of expecting his double to blow everyone over. I think he needs to use his rational head instead of his instincts though. He was up points at the end of the third period and still kept attacking at the end. It worked tonight but come tournament time, heavyweights need to be comfortable taking a 1 or 2 point win.

The guys were awesome today. Nino somehow lost up 5-1 with the guy cradled. Other than that fluke we were about as good as we could have been. Props to the coaches and wrestlers
I think Nino was actually up 7-1 after getting 2 for TD before getting reversed and 4 pt nf. It was 7-7 after exchange. If Nino had ridden him out the last minute, he would have had riding time and victory. They elected to give up the escape and Nino could not get that last TD to get the win.

Right, it was 5-1 when he locked up the cradle & got 2. It’s crazy to end up losing in that situation.
