Don't look now, but, Capel has a nice collection of talent playing together as a team at both ends of the floor. It is very early, but, I am pretty sure Capel has something moving in the right direction here. Could the Pete begin to see the empty seats steadily decline this year???

We were out rebounded and committed more turnovers and still came out with a win. That’s a gritty team. Imagine if we could routinely win the turnover and rebound margin.

Thats true but you have to admit its hard to win when you commit more turnovers and are out rebounded.

Unless you shoot ones, twos and threes better!

:p

The turnover difference only ended up being 2, which isn't that big of a deal. We actually did an average job percentage-wise on the defensive glass. It was really just the complete lack of offensive rebounding that was the difference in rebounding.

One quibble with Federiko's defense is that there is no reason for him to be pushing the hedge out to 40 feet from the basket. The guy who is 40 feet from the basket can't hurt you. His teammate who is rolling to the hoop wide open can.
The high hard hedge away from the basket is what took their guards out of the game. It doesn't always work but the coaches must have scouted and saw something with their guards where they thought it would work and it did. We have all jammed this coaching staff over the last 6 years but tonight they deserve credit.

Wow, I didn't see that, only 2? Yes, it was an absolute lack of O-rebounding or the first half could have been even more of a point difference. None the less, good effort tonight and a fun Pitt win! Cheers Joe!

I agree that we did a good job hedging the screens that were at or near the three point line. You should basically never be hedging 40 feet from the basket, because unless you are worried about the other team hitting 40 footers the guy with the ball can't hurt you there. Just go under the screen and pick the guy back up 30-35 feet from the basket.

If their guy wants to shoot open 35-40 footers, have at it.

They out turnovered us in the second half 9-5. So 14-12 for the game.

Not good by any means, but not awful.

The strategy is not used because your afraid they are going to shoot from there. Although their leading scorer has Steph Curry range and the announcers said as much. It is used to put pressure on the ball handler almost like a half court trap. Also, in this case, you aren't worried about their 2 bigs getting pick and roll passes away from the basket cause those 2 guys were basically big stiffs who could only hurt you when they are posted up. You actually want them to try and shuffle a pass off to one of them in the open court at the foul like cause it will result in a turnover.

I just can't get over yet how good it feels to win in the ACC again, to watch quality Pitt basketball. This was just fun...no other words needed.

A yet several times they dumped the ball into those bigs that you weren't worried about for easy baskets.

If you want to jump out and trap someone 40 feet from the basket, jump out and trap them. Hedging the screen hard doesn't really do that, because the guy who is getting screened isn't there to help trap. And you can't trap with one.

I don't recall anytime where they dumped a pass into the low post from 40 feet away. If you saw that, you have better eyes than me. If they dribble out of the hedge and dump it off, that's another thing but again, Pitt did not want to get beat by their 3 point shooting which had been really good until tonight.

It throws the opponent’s timing off from the getgo. Teams have offenses to run and disruption at the earliest snowballs or trickles down the remaining possession time. Can’t argue that it is disruptive. Coaches apparently saw this as a way to combat their athleticism. Helps to have a big who is athletic to pull it off most times.

Sure, sometimes it does. And other times it gets their big a layup. And other times it gets their big the ball down low with someone like Nelly Cummings guarding him on the rotation.
