New US soccer thread

Am I the only one who thinks maybe we should do a 4-4-2 with Pulisic up top, especially when Gio comes back? We don't have strikers but are pretty loaded at midfield/wingers with Weah, Reyna, McKennie, Adams, Arriola, Aaronson, etc
Well…I actually am one of the only ones who wondered if CP should sit. He’s in bad form. But he was also man marked really tightly vs Canada and he was able to do some things.

I also watch every one of CP’s club games, and he’s much more effective out in space dribbling at backs. And vs Honduras, I actually don’t know if I’d want him in tight spaces centrally getting kicked 1000 times tonight. But your 4-4-2 suggestion maybe gets him in front of the goal where he is also very good.

Pulisic is a natural winger. Its his best position. But we cant score. I wouldn't sit Pulisic but I wonder if he needs a different position for this team. The attention he draws doesn't open up anything for anybody. Maybe if he's up top, he finishes on the 1 or 2 you need.

Lol. Isn’t that the uber/incredible English team that couldn’t beat the US in the World Cup? Our teams of old weren’t as talented but we best people up. That should be enough to explain to Owt that it is an incredibly complicated game that’s about more than just talent.

the average age of this team is less than 24. The only players over 24 were the goalkeeper, and zardes. And universally everyone (other than Pitt79) knows Zardes shouldn’t ever step on a US national team Field again.

im not making excuses. Well maybe I am. But I don’t lose any sleep over this stuff. I just think chemistry and coaching is what this team needs. The chemistry will just take time. These are kids playing against men. But the coaching? Who the heck knows.
I don't get this "incredibly complicated game". Bull. Sorry. I hear that so much from Futbol Heads. I can't buy that it is just "complicated" as an excuse.

And does a sportscrazy society of 300 million people, a large portion much more athletic than most other countries and we have to worry about beating a Panama, Costa Rica and Honduras. Come on.

And then.....yeah, let's put a game in single digit temperatures. That's smart. So you are the much more talented team, and you dumb the game down by playing in the Artic that likely will affect talent and be an equalizer as no one will be performing at their best. Am I missing something? The great football teams don't grow the grass high to slow down the lesser talented team, right?

I do think the US's biggest issue there is just not a really good North American pro league where kids aspire to play. And this has a trickle down effect on who plays soccer versus other sports. The reason why the USA is now a hockey power and it is no longer a "Miracle on Ice" is because the top pro league in the world is here. And this has trickled down into the grass roots.

I mean, it is going to be like ZERO tonight. I know that is cold for Honduras, but guess what, that is cold for anyone. So we put a constraint on our own talented and effectively give the opponent a way to equalize things a bit.

Brilliant. Is the USMNT run by our government?

They’re idiots. The game should be in a warm climate on a good surface. US soccer has taken away a competitive edge for this team.

I mean, if you loosely follow it, you’re not going to understand it. But it’s the one game that I think of that you just can’t roll out a ball and tell the more talented team to win. It doesn’t work that way. When you have a competing team putting 10 players behind the ball and telling the opponent to break them down, it’s just not easy.

case in point, you have Messi, Neymar and Mbappe playing for PSG in the French league. PSG is owned by an Arab oil country. They buy any player they want. Their payroll is in a different universe than the rest of the teams in their league. The French league is like the #6 league in Europe. Its PSG and then there’s everyone else. It’s not a great league. And these guys can’t get going. They just got knocked out of a Cup competition this week. Those three players are like soccers Lemieux, MacDavid, and Ovechkin.

I heard a story this AM. Soccer is about possession, probing and penetration. And a team just can’t easily break another team down. It takes time. A Brazilian World Cup winning coach said it takes 3 years to play that way effectively. This US team are all under the age of 24 and barely have any games together at all. They have a long way to go.

Well in hockey, you need a blue line and a goaltender and depth scoring. You can argue Edmonton has the two best players in the league (world) and they are struggling to make the playoffs. Again.

And then there are some players who just are serial winners. Sidney Crosby. Tom Brady. Sure, they are great, but they also somehow win and find the way. I am sure there are some soccer players like that.

My all time favorite US Soccer player was Clint Dempsey. Why? Because he seemed to just not get intimidated and would score big goals. He seemed like he could have been a hockey player. :)

Are we really in trouble for missing the WC?

it would be so pathetic if we can't beat a winless Honduras ?

Why does the United States or Russia have to worry about beating Canada in hockey?

Russia - Population 144 million
United States - Population 330 million
Canada - 38 million

And yet for some reason those countries don't absolutely dominate Canada on the ice. Why do you suppose that is if all it takes is a sports crazy society with a lot more people?

I advocate for a 4-2-3-1 if everyone is healthy. The front four would be Pulisic and Weah on the wings with Reyna playing in the middle underneath Pepi. McKennie and Adams as the two defensive midfielders, with Adams being the one playing deeper.

But that isn't going to happen, because it isn't the coach's preferred way to play.

USA Hockey is a good comparison to USA Soccer. Neither sport, by and large, gets the best American athletes but due to the sheer size of the country, their B level athletes (and a few A level ones who sneak in) can compete with the smaller countries whose A athletes play hockey and soccer.

I liked how Donovan was often used as a forward even though he was an attacking midfielder like Pulisic.

I heard Derphalter in his pregame interview today. The goal was to finish in 2nd place after these 3 matches. No dipshit, your goal should have been 9 points and atop the table.

If this squad draws or loses this evening, sack his ass, sack the entire hierarchy of the federation that isn't in an elected position.

Hell, whoever, and I hear Derphalter has a big say in this, decided this match should be played in St. Paul tonight, should be sacked as well. We are seriously talking about player safety now, fan safety, official safety. Sure, I heard someone say there are heating coils under the pitch but the overall air temperature has to negate that.

If they don't get 3 tonight, I fear they may not qualify for Qatar.

we are run by a bunch of idiots. The NHL is a garage run Mickey Mouse league and now US Soccer is too.

they say oxygen levels are impacted in the severe cold. Not a good thing for player safety in a sport where these guys are going to all be running a half marathon tonight.

what’s funny is we failed to qualify for the World Cup 4 years ago because we had to win in a stadium and field worse than Clairton’s midget football program. Now we can’t even control the environment in which the game will be played on our own soil.

I’m thinking berhalter runs out his 4-3-3. He’s not changing. And against Honduras I wouldn’t either.

and I’m not against sitting Pulisic. He may not be fit. I have to wonder.

Turner

Robinson - Robinson - Zimmerman - Cannon
McKennie - Acosta - de la Torre
Morris - Pepi - Weah

That sad thing is, this federation is scared of playing a home game in a geographic area with Hondurans in close proximity. If they're afraid of playing a home game in which the crowd if 50/50 vs Honduras when they have no issues when it's 75/25 or 80/20 for Mexico/US matches then that is a pathetic state of affairs with this federation.

I can tell you this right now, if the Junkyard Dawg, Puli or any other player in mid season form picks up a nick....that club should publicly shame and slam Derphalter and this federation for their choice to put their fears over playing in a decent climate

I"m shocked he didn't start his bestie again. This isn't a terrible lineup, I woulda put in Aaronson over Morris considering Morris is coming off ACL rehab and Aaronson is in mid season form. Derphalter.

I'm not really in favor of benching Pulisic, but if you aren't going to play him you have to play Aaronson. Morris over Aaronson makes no sense.

Even though Puli is struggling, he has that spark that no others do. He can turn nothing into something at the snap of a finger.

Derphalter.

Let's just hope we get the good Kellen Acosta tonight, the one that shined in the Gold Cup in the summer. He is so inconsistent it drives me crazy.

It just makes the Zardes selection all the more baffling. The US could have gone up there and won that game. He can start Pulisic, Pepi, and Reyna (or Weah) vs Mexico…but it’s still AT Mexico, a place where they’ve never won. It’s too late for that. He should have done it vs Canada.

Adams got sent back to his club, as did Richards, both because of injury.
Is it me or does the US national team seem to pick up for injuries during international windows than other national teams? Puli, Reyna, Weah, Richards, Adams...I'm very certain I'm missing others.

Jason Davis said today that Adams picked up a nick. I don't mind the De La Torre pick...I wanna see what he can do. He was never really given a shot at Fulham but has been bright in the Eredivisie with Heracles
These coaches outthink themselves. Just play your best 11 when you can! Because its concacaf, they are always gonna get banged up, you should just play your best when they’re available and then worry about the next game later. Play your best and get your 3pts and move on.

don’t play Zardes because he “presses” better. Play Pepi because he finishes better! And gain some chemistry with other first teamers. Not save him so he can play with freakin Morris.

Honestly, I think it has to do with the way these games get officiated. It's pretty clear that most teams in CONCACAF's philosophy when playing the US is to hack the shit out of them until the refs do something to make you stop. And CONCACAF refs rarely do anything to make them stop.

Yeah I can't argue at all about Zardes and Morris. Morris is a nice squad player when the weather is decent but a guy coming off an ACL injury in this condition, eff no. Zardes, I never want to see him on the national team unless it's during a non fifa sanctioned international break when the matches don't really count.

Yeah. It’s concacaf. Nuff said.

Pulisic picked up that injury vs Honduras in the Fall, and all the Chelsea fans and other fans rip him for being injury prone. That could be true, but that injury he picked up vs Honduras was legit and was due to the bullshit they were allowed to fish out to him. The kid fought through it all and kept battling, until that final TKO tackle that almost took his foot off at the ankle.

That's a bingo to steal this from FK earlier in the thread.

Our Jamaican official seems intent on keeping the crap to a minimum so far
