On Campus Stadium

Even with a big game just two days away, the usual out of season topic rises again.

We have some really dumb fans.

Pitt's athletic department is one of the most financially challenged, if not the most financially challenged, of the BCS schools, and we have some here who want Pitt to sink $250 million+ into a new stadium.

In hindsight, I wonder if a major upgrade to the stadium was possible and build a new venue

actually we want a stadium in the neighborhood of 350 - 400 million but we'd rather have some non profit local health care system foot the bill.

Temple has NEVER averaged 30K.....even with their own place. Maybe not 25K. This year, with psu, ND & a good team, maybe they will. Temple FB is half a step above Philly Science (Textile for us old guys) hoops.

1970s when Wayne Hardin was the coach. 1980s--the Paul Palmer years when Bruce Arians was the coach.

Keep dissing . . . it fuels the fire.

I'm always taken back a bit when people compare our situation to Temple and Tulane. We escaped having to settle into the AAC, and instead are in the ACC, a P5 school. We should think it, and act like when considering stadium options.

TarHeel, you may be right about the bball issue. I coach youth basketball, and we are having our draft tonight. Two of the coaches are former players at State. I'm going to ask them for their thoughts on an on-campus arena for bball. I know folks loved the history and charm of Reynolds, and they would scream if they ever tried to tear it down. And bball in the RBC Center feels a bit sterile in a ~20k seat arena. But Reynolds was small, and I'm not joking, 80% of the seats are in the endzones. Just like with our long gone Pitt Stadium, people remember it nostalgically, and forget some of the sad realities of the place.

You people kill me with your parking and traffic fears. Somehow, some way Oakland can accomodate, I dont know, 100,000 people during rush hour on weekdays but the world will end if 40,000 people decide to go to a football game on a Saturday

If traffic is so bad in Oakland, perhaps Pitt and UPMC should move out of Oakland.

Parking and traffic are NEVER a reason why we wont get a stadium.

If Temple can build one, you best believe Gallagher and Barnes will.

Parking and traffic will never be a problem for jerks like you SMF because you are too cheap to go to a game so take your bs somewhere else and let supporters talk like grown ups. Enjoy your bobby of games. Parking ain't a problem there loser

I bet hienz becomes pitts stadium when the steelers move in 15 years. Just what i see happening, unless the steelers stay on the north shore

The Linc was sold out for PSU and will be for ND this weekend (about 70K for each). The other two home games this year were a terrible Tulane team that drew 35K+ and a winless UCF team that drew 31K+. This was actual attendance. Pitt should try using that counting method at some point. The 45K and 50K "announced" crowds are so much higher than actual attendance that anyone watching on TV can see how ridiculous these numbers are.

I live in Raleigh, home of NC State. Is anyone aware that State plays in an off-campus stadium? Its the same distance from the center of campus as Heinz is from the Cathedral.

I've lived here for 20 years, know a lot of state fans, and I've never heard a single word from any fans or anyone in the media regarding the need for an on-campus stadium. No one wants one, and no one thinks its holding the program down, or hurts attendance. Not a single word in 20 years.
I was at the Pitt/NCSU game. Im aware that both their football and basketball venues are off-campus. However, the NUMBER ONE issue with Heinz is simply that its too big. Having an on-campus stadium would be great, but the size if the venue we play in is far more important. The 20,000-30,000 empty seats KILL the atmosphere and atmosphere is a big part of college football. NCSU's stadium fits them despite being off-campus.

We are Stanford, Baylor, TCU, Minnesota, GT, BC but playing in a stadium far too big. TCU's crowd would loom embarrassing at JerryWorld. We are a 45K program. Size, not location is the main problem.

I don't think wins and losses play into the discussion at all. Minnesota isn't contending for B10 titles, but they certainly draw better and have significantly improved their game day atmosphere. And I'm not arguing we are equivalent to Minnesota, we should certainly aim higher. But their stadium IS gorgeous and a size we could probably pack for almost every game.

Stadium or no stadium, I'd think our campus is going to need to expand somewhere in the next 20-30 years.

All that being said, I don't expect any movement in the next decade or so. Most of these teams moved out of outdated pro stadiums (Tulane, Minnesota) or decrepit dumps (Baylor). If Temple leaves the Linc, they would be the first college team to leave a relatively new pro stadium, no?

If you ever get a chance, I encourage y'all to go to a game at Georgia Tech's Bobby Dodd Stadium. Perhaps in 2017 when y'all play at their place again. It's the oldest stadium in the ACC but it's still one of my absolute favorites -- I've been to many games there including the UNC game there this season. It's nestled into the heart of midtown Atlanta so you can see skyscrapers on the one side, yet it's still on the edge of campus, so you can see dorms and such on the other side. I also like how close the stands are to the field, making it very intimate. It seats like 54,000 I believe and is the perfect size for Georgia Tech.

A 45,000 - 50,000 stadium similar to that one would work awesome for Pitt, in my opinion. It's a very compact stadium yet doesn't feel small or crowded. Now if you'll excuse me, I need to go take a shower after saying so many good things about Georgia Tech.

Uh, I think it plays heavily.
Which 5 year scenario would produce better crowds and a better atmosphere:
a. Pitt at Heinz Field, averaging a 10-2 record and playing in a few ACC title games.
b. Pitt in their own on-campus stadium, averaging a 7-5 record and not even sniffing a Coastal division title.

It plays, but I don't think it has anything to do with the stadium. Pitt Stadium WAS a dump and affected recruiting, no doubt. Moving to Heinz improved our ability to recruit, but I think it had more to do with our poor previous facilities than Heinz itself. I don't think moving to a new, smaller stadium of our own would negatively affect our ability to win.
